“Grattamacco” Vermentino Bolgheri DOC 2018 (BIO)

High quality and rare Vermentino of straw-yellow colour and a bouquet of white fruits and hazelnut. On the palate flowery fresh, round and ripe. The well-dosed use of wood gives the wine a fine creamy texture. A persistent, highly elegant Bolgheri Bianco for special occasions. SUPERIORE.DE

"Fragrant and multi-layered, flint and elegant wood spice, complex, after peach and candied lemon peel. Creamy melt, rich body, spreads out widely, shows fine play between wood spice and lemon, salty in the aftertaste." Falstaff

    About the winemakers
    Grattamacco
    Tuscany | Bolgheri
    Grattamacco

The Grattamacco winery was founded in 1977 between the villages of Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri. Claudio Tipa, born in Sicily and a former industrialist, has been managing the Grattamacco estate since 2002 - first as a tenant - now as an owner with a great deal of passion and high competence in the Bolgheri noble cultivation area. It is part of his own small wine kingdom Colle Massari Spa.
The Tuscan company, in which he is supported by his wife Maria and sister Maria-Iris, also includes Tipa's own vineyards Poggio di Sotto in the Montalcino area and Colle Massari in the Maremma. Those who visit Grattamacco, situated on a hill between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, will be rewarded with a magnificent panorama of the Tuscan coast. The very attractive farm extends over 35 hectares, of which a good 13 hectares are planted with vines and three with olives. The vineyard, surrounded by 1,200 hectares of forest, is a model for the entire cultivation zone. Its flagship is the magnificent Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco, which is regularly praised by wine critics.

The landowner of the Podere Grattamacco is considered by experts to be one of the most conscientious and well organised winegrowers in Italian viticulture. Since Tipa has been operating the estate, the elegant wines of the broad range have gained in fascination and stylistic definition, according to the wine tasters. Previously, the owner had pioneered Bolgheri for more than 20 years and had played a decisive role in making it a region of great red wines. Since Claudio Tipa immediately faced the fierce competition in the wine market after his entry, the small winery has discarded its character as a noble niche company in the meantime.

Cabernet Sauvignon is mainly cultivated on the vineyard hills, which reach a height of around 100 metres above sea level (around 60 per cent). Smaller lots are planted with Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Only Vermentino is cultivated on the slopes as a white grape variety. The soils of the Grattamacco vineyards are sandy at lower altitudes, with limestone and marl in higher altitudes.

In the cellar, the utmost care is taken down to the smallest detail. The hand-picked grapes ferment in small wooden vats. The farsighted winery owner deliberately refrains from adding pure yeast to control fermentation. The malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously and ends after the wine has already been transferred into barrique barrels. All the grape varieties are vinified separately in the estate until the cuvées are produced. SUPERIORE.DE

"Although Grattamacco was founded in the 1970s and can be considered a long-established company in Bolgheri, it does not lack dynamism and surprising developments. Gambero Rosso
