    • Vinschgauer Weißburgunder Alto Adige DOC 2018

Vinschgauer Weißburgunder Alto Adige DOC 2018

Sparkling light yellow with green reflexes. Clear, very wide scent of apple, citrus, meadow herbs and some pear fruit, rich on the palate and with a tight freshness and invigorating fruit acidity that is powerful for the high altitudes of the Vinschgau Valley. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright straw yellow. Elegant and inviting nose, marked by cool minerality, delicate flint, light smoke, then delicate quince and golden apple. On the palate very juicy, mineral, with many layers and pressure, brilliant progression, salty in the final." Falstaff

"Franz Pratzner's Falkenstein 2018 Alto Adige Valle Venosta Pinot Bianco is luminous, light and packed with authentic Northern Italian character. These wines from Alto Adige, especially the Pinot Bianco grape, show a vivid level of brilliance and focused aromatic intensity that is something to behold. You get crisp notes of pear, melon, citrus and crushed stone. The wine is light and fresh, yet the finish is long and polished. Dial up some raw oysters for this one. The wine offers terrific value." • "Private Reserve" Vinschgauer Sauvignon Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2012

“Private Reserve” Vinschgauer Sauvignon Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2012

The Pratzner family retains several hundred bottles of each good vintage, which are then matured for another 6 years in the cellar. These refined wines are then sold in small quantities as "Private Reserve" to selected retailers and the gastronomy industry, thus demonstrating the impressive maturing potential of the wines matured on fine yeast for 10 months.

Strong straw yellow. Intense bouquet of gooseberries with a restrained peppery note. Full and juicy on the palate with grapefruit, citrus and an interesting stimulating spice. With an almost youthful freshness and juiciness, this multi-layered Riserva also glides into a wonderfully long, mineral finish. SUPERIORE.DE

    • Vinschgauer Riesling Alto Adige DOC 2018

Vinschgauer Riesling Alto Adige DOC 2018

Riesling is the speciality of the Pratzner family: bright straw yellow with golden reflections. Subtle nose of flint, some lime, white flowers and with salty hints. On the palate, a precise acidity that vibrates finely on the tongue, then pulls the wine taut and fresh into the long, juicy final. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, rich lemon yellow. Shy, albeit multi-layered nose, of wet stone, candied lemon, dark minerality, reverberation of flowers, also white peach. On the palate mainly salty and juicy, racy acidity, very precise, with salty melt, with pressure, dry finish." Falstaff

"If you've got your hands on some fresh crab meat or other catch of the day, you'll want to reach for this beautiful wine. The Falkenstein 2018 Alto Adige Valle Venosta Riesling reveals chalky lemon notes, tropical fruit, toasted nut and just a touch of the petroleum that is often associated with this elegant grape. The wine shows exacting varietal purity, with perhaps a bit more emphasis on the orange zest and citrusy notes that I associate with Riesling from the far north of Italy. Crushed mineral and chalk play supporting roles." Robert Parker

    • "Alte Rebe" Vinschgauer Riesling Alto Adige DOC 2017

“Alte Rebe” Vinschgauer Riesling Alto Adige DOC 2017

Franz and Bernadette Pratzner planted their first Riesling grapes more than 30 years ago. The small plot yields just 1,500 bottles per year. The primary rock soil, the dry warmth during the day and the cool nights provide excellent conditions for Vinschgau Riesling to thrive on a steep southern slope between 550 and 900 metres.

Brilliant golden yellow. Aromas of peach and apple combine in the bouquet with a well-dosed portion of minerality. Complex and multi-layered on the palate with yellow fruits, spices and lime. The harmonious overall picture of this exceptional wine is framed by a vibrant acidity and wonderful freshness, which will ensure a long life and further refinement in the bottle. Happy the one who can get hold of a few bottles of it! SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, sparkling golden yellow. Elegant yellow fruity tones on the nose, mineral, delicate wax, honey, blood oranges, matchstick. On the palate impressively juicy, at the same time very dense, carried by profound, supporting acidity, nestles elegantly over the tongue, nice course, builds up big, full-bodied with proper melting, long." Falstaff

"The Falkenstein 2017 Alto Adige Valle Venosta Riesling Alte Rebe is a very different wine compared to Franz Pratzner's classic Riesling from the 2018 vintage. Thanks to that extra year of aging and the hotter and drier growing season, you get a lot more richness, intensity and power in the Alte Rebe. The wine opens to a luminous, off-gold color and shows creamy citrus aromas with preserved lemon and meringue pie. The petroleum aromas are diminished here, replaced instead with ripe fruit and plush richness. Again, those delicate mineral notes from the Dolomites are impossible to miss. A precious few 1,500 bottles were released." Robert Parker

    About the winemakersWeingut FalkensteinTrentino-South Tyrol
    Weingut Falkenstein

Winery with view. One looks far down into the valley at Naturns in Vinschgau. Tiny the houses, the Adige meanders like a narrow blue-green band under the towering, mostly snow-covered mountains. As beautiful as it is at the Vinschgauer Sonnenberg, the work in the steep, terraced vineyards is as laborious. Handcrafted in countless hours.

This vineyard used to be a fruit farm. After visits to the Wachau, which impressed Franz Pratzner very much, he and his wife Bernadette switched completely to viticulture in 1989. The Wachauer influence is still noticeable today in the assortment, because his favourite is the Riesling. Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon blanc, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir complete the range.

If one sees the massive rocks of the Ötztal Alps in the background, one cannot believe that there are on average 315 sunny days here. The dry primary rock soil and the sunny southern location therefore offer the best conditions for the closely planted vines in steep terraces between 550 and 900 m above sea level. 10-12,000 vines per hectare in Guyot education, with 4-5 different clones of each grape variety planted to suit the soil.

Approximately 90,000 bottles of wine per year come from about 12 hectares of vineyards. In addition to the production of white wines with a focus on Riesling, a small quantity of Pinot Noir is also cultivated. Another speciality of the house are pure grappas and noble brandies.

Franz and Bernadette Pratzner are fully committed to manual work, since 2003 all wines are vinified in the new cellar. The architecture of the cellar fulfils the wish of the old family to unite with the new, and so a rock cellar was created next to the modern part, where today the white wines mature in large 10-15 hl wooden barrels. Also here a little influence from the Wachau, the barrels of acacia wood. Meanwhile the two daughters Magdalena and Michaela support their parents. And just as Franz brought ideas from "good old Austria", Magdalena followed with ideas from his internship in Australia. There she was fascinated by the whole grape fermentation of the Pinot Noir and successfully realized it with her Vinschgauer Blauburgunder.

The wines of the Pratzner family are now among the finest in South Tyrol, numerous awards at home and abroad decorate the walls, from the coveted tre bicchieri of Gambero Rosso to the 5 grapes of Bibenda to high scores in Wein-Plus and Falstaff. SUPERIORE.DE
