• Südtiroler Vernatsch DOC 2018

      Südtiroler Vernatsch DOC 2018

The south-eastern slopes of the Valle Isarco are among the best in South Tyrol. Easily heatable moraine scree soils of porphyry and dolomite material and a correspondingly Mediterranean microclimate give the Vernatsch fullness and concentration. Brilliant ruby red, in the bouquet cherry, currant and violet; velvety mild spicy, well structured and at the same time pleasantly youthful and fresh. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense, powerful cherry red. In the nose first spicy, then ripe cherries, blackberries, shows slightly vegetal-spicy tones in the aftertaste. Full palate with a lot of fruit and juice, rich Vernatsch with deep fruit, filled the mouth, full-bodied sip, finely spicy and smooth in the drink and in the final. Falstaff

    • Südtiroler Eisacktaler Gewürztraminer DOC 2018

      Südtiroler Eisacktaler Gewürztraminer DOC 2018

The history of the demanding Gewürztraminer goes back to the early Middle Ages. The autochthonous grape variety thrives best on airy slopes between 250 and 450 m on loamy and sandy soils with plenty of sunlight. And then the wine can convince like this: straw yellow with soft green reflections, with a pronounced bouquet of roses, some carnation and vanilla and an independent character on the palate. A Gewürztraminer with support in the body, with a lot of elegance and harmony in the fine mineral finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, bright straw yellow. Filigree fragrant nose of white flowers, nutmeg, lychee, then in the aftertaste of vanilla sugar. On the palate very juicy and clear, opens with a juicy core and fruity middle part, appears light-footed and shows a nice drinking flow". Falstaff

    About the winemakers
    Weingut Ebner
    Trentino-South Tyrol
    Weingut Ebner

The Eisack Valley between Bozen and Brixen is the northernmost wine region of Italy. Here at 600 to 800m above sea level, mostly on alpine, steep primary rock soils of porphyry, quartz and mica, viticulture often reaches its physical limits.

In one of the best locations lies the "Rittner sun plateau" in the southern Eisack valley, below the impressive Schlern massif, where Brigitte and Florian Unterthiner cultivate their vineyards. Only five hectares are planted here on formerly volcanic soils, porphyry and calcareous, with Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon and the almost exotic Grüner Veltliner. For red wine, the Unterthiners rely on their award-winning Vernatsch, Pinot blanc, as Pinot noir (optionally: Pinot noir) is called here and again on an Austrian grape variety, the Zweigelt.

The Mediterranean influence flows through the valley in summer and especially in autumn, and with its sunny, mild days and cool alpine mountain air at night makes for very independent wines. Racy, powerful and subtle at the same time. The work of Florian and Brigitte Unterthiner, the third generation of the family to run the farm, is characterised by passion and tradition in more than 40 year old pergola handicraft vineyards on terraces with deep roots, which therefore survive dry periods well - but also by the courage to do something new, such as gentle pruning. Sustainability, quality and origin are not buzzwords, but are lived here. For example, the use of herbicides is completely dispensed with and the soil is kept vital with stable fertiliser.

The Unterthiners produce deep wines full of character. The technique and the statistics are not in charge here, the grapes are tasted here and a decision is made when "floated"as the grape harvest here is called. Handiwork, experience and intuition - and you can taste it with every sip. And if you ever drive south across the Brenner Pass, you will stop for a break in the wonderful wine tavern of the Unterthiners. SUPERIORE.DE
