Things are happening in Bolzano. The whole city seems to be on the move. With the new Bolzano Winery, it now also has a new landmark. Visible from afar, the cube with the stylised bronze-coloured wine leaf towers above the mountains in the north of South Tyrol's capital.
Most of the winery, however, was built underground into the mountainside and the roof was planted with PIWI vines in terraces. The huge cellar thus blends almost invisibly into the landscape. The people of Bolzano already call it "the cellar in the vineyard". Around 20,000 square metres on four floors now offer enough space for the impressively diverse range of almost 40 different wine specialities. Because variety has always been the speciality of South Tyrolean winegrowers. Especially at the Cantina Bolzano with its 224 members, who proudly call themselves winegrowers.
On a patchwork of hundreds of plots with a wide variety of soils, they carefully cultivate their vines in a sustainable and natural way. The variety of soils ranges from fertile glacial moraine gravel, which was washed out of the Dolomites by the rivers Etsch, Eisack and Talfer over centuries, to volcanic porphyry in a wide variety of micro-climates. Some of them also in organic farming. More than 350 hectares in total. This makes the Cantina Bolzano one of the largest wine cooperatives in South Tyrol and, at the same time, one of the top winegrowing companies in Italy for many years.
It all began in 1908, when a handful of winegrowers from the municipality of Gries joined forces to cultivate and market Lagrein, the grape variety most commonly grown in the Etsch Valley. Then in 1930, eighteen winegrowers around the St. Magdalenerberg founded another winegrowers' cooperative whose goal was to make the St. Magdalener wine made from Eisacktaler Vernatsch better known. In 2001, the two small cooperatives merged to form the "Cantina di Bolzano". To this day, the best sites are largely distributed between these two areas. This is why the Cantina Bolzano is known far beyond South Tyrol for its award-winning St. Magdalener and Lagrein wines.
In addition, there is also a variety of excellent white wines. Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon bianco, Chardonnay, Goldmuskateller and many other elegant and mineral specialities from 15 different grape varieties, ranging from inexpensive entry-level wines to the wonderful single-vineyard wines that sometimes come from dizzyingly high altitudes, as some plots are located at almost 900 metres above sea level.
Names like Taber Riserva, Huck am Bach, Moar, Mockhof or Otto Graf Huyn make the hearts of many wine lovers beat faster. There are awards for them practically every year. At home and abroad. Oenologist Stephan Filippi and his team are responsible for these successes. Together with managing director Klaus Sparer, they have formed a brilliantly successful duo since the late 1980s.
It is exciting to see what else will be possible now, as Filippi now has space for the first time to develop each grape delivery from the many vineyards in even more detail and with greater care. In the new cellar, which, by the way, was built according to the "climate house standard" - with solar panels, heat pumps and shading as well as natural cooling in the mountain - gravity is used on the four floors. This eliminates most mechanical processes such as pumping, because grapes and musts are processed most gently in the natural flow. There are suitable steel tanks or barrels for each of the vineyards and wines. Perfectionist Stephan Filippi can rejoice. And so can we wine lovers. SUPERIORE.DE
