“Epokale” Gewürztraminer Spätlese Alto Adige DOC 2012

The name says it all. This wine is a reminiscence of a bygone era. It is a Gewürztraminer vinified in traditional style with clearly perceptible residual sugar. The grapes come from two of the oldest Gewürztraminer sites near the Nußbaumerhof in Tramin, from soils with calcareous gravel and porphyry rock. In order to develop its character in the best possible way, epocals mature for seven years in the dark of the Ridnaun tunnel on the Schneeberg at an altitude of over 2,000 metres. Here, four kilometres deep inside the mountain, it preserves its freshness and acquires elegance thanks to an environment in which constant humidity and a cool temperature of 11 degrees all year round prevail.

Intense golden yellow. Impressive bouquet of rose petals, some lavender and ripe, exotic fruits. Spicy notes of dried herbs, sage, ginger, saffron and cinnamon. A wine of pronounced aromatics, infinite depth with simultaneous delicately spicy juiciness and salty minerality. The acidity harmonises unparalleled with the ultra-fine residual sweetness and makes this Late Harvest-Riserva a unique experience. There are 1,200 bottles of this vintage. SUPERIORE.DE

"Now the people of Traminer have put their money on the Nussbaumer: a selection of the oldest, 30 year old sticks that grow above Söll - a district of Tramin - at an altitude of 500 metres. The wine is called Epokale, and the special thing about it is that the bottles, before being sold, are stored 7 years deep in the mountain to mature better. In concrete terms: in a disused mine gallery on the southern flank of the main Alpine ridge. The 2009 vintage of the Epokale was the first to be stored there. Only after seven years was it brought back to light: a wine of symphonic fullness - not loud, but polyphonic. It shows notes of ginger, mint, mango, herb spice, is much fresher and much further back in development than its counterpart, which matured in the cellar in Tramin. There Fall has stored a few comparison bottles. The epocal from there already tends towards golden yellow in colour, is much creamier and, although it is the same filling, is more reminiscent of forest honey and ripe banana. Whether the Stollenwein, when it is taken out of the mountain, takes the same development, nobody can predict. But the difference now is striking. Whether other factors besides temperature, humidity and darkness play a role in storage is not known by Stürz and his employees. The air pressure and possibly also the radioactive radiation of the rock could theoretically influence the ripening process. There's no evidence of that. It is only clear that the epocal has a finesse like no other Gewürztraminer in the world." Dr. Jens Priewe (weinkenner.de)

"A luscious nose of dried mangoes, pineapple, dried peaches, lemon meringue, and some fresh grapefruit and limes to boot. Full-bodied with tons of fruit on the oily, dense palate, but only off-dry and with cutting, agile acidity. Phenolic and powerful." James Suckling

    • "Troy" Chardonnay Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2016 <br>MAGNUM in OWC

“Troy” Chardonnay Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2016 · MAGNUM in OWC

Troy is not a regular Chardonnay. It is rather the archetype of a Chardonnay, as Wolfgang Klotz, managing director of the probably most successful winegrowers' cooperative in South Tyrol, sees it. The grapes come from two selected vineyards in Söll, near Tramin. There, not only a Mediterranean climate prevails, but also during the night quite cold down winds determine the vegetation. Both factors that ensure optimal development of the plants and fruits. The berries are hand-picked piece by piece and therefore every wine connoisseur knows that this is an absolutely prestigious project of the cooperative. So it is not surprising that only 3,000 bottles of this crescendo reach the selected specialist shops and top gastronomy.

Intense straw to golden yellow. In the bouquet tropical fruit, a touch of camomile and mint, then fine toasted notes and a subtle nutty touch. On the palate you can almost taste the proximity of the mountains, its clarity, freshness and intensity: exotic notes of yellow ripe fruit, then again some nuts and in addition again a beguiling liveliness and minerality, which ends in a similar long final. Chardonnay can be that way too, chapeau! SUPERIORE.DE

"This is a rich, exuberant chardonnay with tons of mango dessert, peach pie, dried-pear tart and vanilla. Very round and oily on the palate with lots of banoffee pie and yogurt." James Suckling

"Pale yellow. High-pitched perfume of lime and dusty stone complemented by a strong late kick of sweet spices. Offers superb texture and richness, not to mention balance, for an Italian Chardonnay wine. Closes long with lovely subtle sweetness to the flavors of lemon, lime and powdered stone." Vinous
