“Vette di San Leonardo” Sauvignon Bianco Dolomiti IGT 2021
The 100% Sauvignon Blanc of Tenuta San Leonardo is a fragrant and lively white wine that always remains true to the varietal character of the grape. The vineyards lie beneath snow-capped mountains and rock formations carved by glaciers. Vette impressively reflects the sharpness and brilliant intensity of the panoramic terrain that has noticeably shaped it. On the nose, it is reminiscent of exotic fruits and passion fruit; on the palate, there is well-integrated acidity and a subtle mineral component. A fresh, juicy finish rounds off the wonderful drinking experience. SUPERIORE.DE
"This striking Sub-Alpine sauvignon blanc smells like a perfectly ripe pink grapefruit, but also has a slew of fresh-herb and nettle aromas! Juicy and polished on the medium-to full-bodied palate, the very lively acidity making the finish mouthwateringly delightful." James Suckling

“Terre di San Leonardo” Rosso Dolomiti IGT 2018
The grapes for this lovely red cuvée of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère come without exception from the winery's own vineyards. Terre offers present notes of black cherry, spice and blackberry. It is a whimsical, lively and very fruit-driven red that will provide much pleasure within the next few years! SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2018 Terre di San Leonardo is peppery and floral with crushed wild berries and pomegranate. This is a soft and focused expression, with an inner herbal character and tart red and black berries that cascade across its mineral core. It leaves a staining of primary concentration and hints of sour citrus, along with a coating of round tannins that frames the expression well. The 2018 has a lean and very classic San Leonardo personality. That said, it will be best enjoyed with a meal. " Vinous
"Brimming with redcurrant and blackcurrant aromas, together with notes of mint and sage and a touch of spice. On the mid-weight palate there’s an excellent balance of restrained juiciness, healthy tannin and nice freshness. Still youthful." James Suckling

“Villa Gresti di San Leonardo” Rosso Dolomiti IGT 2017
Villa Gresti is an exciting cuvée of Merlot and Carménère that strikes a very nice balance between fruit intensity, spice, ripe cherry and sweet tobacco. Medium-bodied on the palate, with a softness and a very attractive, drinkable style and a rich, fruit-driven finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"So vibrant for its age, this has so many herbal aromas it’s almost got a herb-liqueur nose! Very cool and elegant, in the way good old Bordeaux is, but with youthful vitality, and it has a core of blackberry and ripe elderberry. Self-confidently dry finish." James Suckling

“Carménère di San Leonardo” Rosso Dolomiti IGT 2016
The Carménère grape, which is hardly ever found in Italy and is usually found in the Médoc, is masterfully reinterpreted at Tenuta San Leonardo. Deep, dark ruby red, with a broad-shouldered bouquet of dark fruit and very harmonious spiciness. The barely noticeable acidity makes it round on the palate, silky smooth and extremely long and elegant. With this single-varietal red, too, the winery impressively demonstrates its lone class in the region. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark shining ruby garnet. Noble-scented, spicy nose of ripe green pepper, violet and cassis, distinctly of freshly ground peppercorn, reverberating with ivy. Juicy and clear on the palate, tightens up precisely, with well-balanced fruit and acidity, will age superbly." Falstaff
"An exciting, energetic wine that finally gives the carmenere grape (from Bordeaux) a positive profile in Northeastern Italy, where it arrived in the late 19th century. Complex mushroom, soy-sauce and spicy character. The racy tannins and acidity are married to the juicy and vibrant palate, which breaks the mold for this region decisively!" James Suckling
"From the moment I tilt the glass, the 2016 Carménère makes itself known with an intensely spicy and pungently floral bouquet that mixes crushed stone and smoke with dried flowers, white pepper and red currant. It’s undeniably silky and refined, yet medium in body, as tart wild berries mix with savory spices and hints of sour citrus, all enlivened by juicy acidity. While long and saturating with primary concentration, the 2016 comes across as only lightly structured yet harmonious, with a subtle coating of sweet tannin and sour citrus that lingers, along with hints of tart raspberry and minerals. There's an open-knit feel to this today, but it also has the balance for a long evolution. Very nice." Vinous

“San Leonardo” Rosso Dolomiti IGT 2016
San Leonardo is the flagship of the eponymous winery and one of the best red wines of Trentino every year. Opulent bouquet with nuances of dark fruits such as blackberry and sour cherry. Delicate spicy, leather and tobacco notes give it a terrific complexity, which is then extended on the palate by a harmonious play of dark berries, plums, the whole then flanked by clearly contoured tannin. A masterful red with a strong personality that will rise to its true greatness after a few more years of bottle ageing and live up to its reputation. SUPERIORE.DE
"Powerful, bright ruby with a slight violet shimmer. Opens with fine spicy notes of bay leaf and white pepper, then lots of dark currant. Emphasises spicy notes on the palate as well, opens with fine-meshed tannin, flows quietly along, long and juicy." Falstaff
"A very elegant, classic Bordeaux blend in the Italian context, but this is actually a special wine in any context, thanks to its subtlety and aromatic complexity. Blackcurrant, black-cherry and mint notes with just a hint of red bell pepper. Finely etched, medium-bodied palate with crisp tannins and lively acidity. The elegant tannins carry the long, cool finish." James Suckling
"Another year in bottle has added unexpected depths and dimension to the 2016 San Leonardo. It wafts up with an alluring bouquet of smoky black currant and plum skins, complicated by savory herbs, hints of white pepper and fresh tobacco. It's hard chiseled edges have formed into smooth contours now, velvety yet youthfully dense, washing mineral encased dark red and black berries across a core of brisk acidity as a combination of saline-minerals and grippy tannins add tension toward the close. This finishes incredibly long yet also structured, begging for time in the cellar, as hints of licorice and earth tones grumble under an air of inner violet florals. The potential within the 2016 San Leonardo is off the charts, yet it will require a good amount of time to come fully into focus. Bury your bottles deep." Vinous

"The 2017 San Leonardo is dark, inward and intense with masses of crushed black currants, mint, sage, and balsamic spice. This pulls you close, as further depths of clove and tobacco form in the glass. It coasts along the palate with dense and polished textural fruits, mineral to the core, yet also elevated by brisk acids, while slowly drenching the senses in concentration. This leaves a web of fine tannins and a salty flourish, while tapering off with remarkable length. It's poised with savory herbs that linger long. In 2017, production was down by over 50% due to multiple hail events and a cask that was damaged during maturation." Vinous
"You could easily mistake the stunningly deep and subtle nose of this Sub-Alpine red for a high-end Medoc wine from the same vintage (which was on the restrained side). A super-elegant, mid-weight cabernet sauvignon-dominated blend with plenty of fine tannin married to blackcurrant and forest-berry fruit, plus touches of licorice, savory notes and bitter chocolate at the very long finish." "Carmenère in the north of Italy has a long history despite sometimes being confused with other grape varieties. Very few are producing it 100% as is this top selection of San Leonardo. Coming from the oldest vineyards of the estate, this wine is made with the same style of the blend: spontaneous 15/18 days of fermentation in small concrete vats with periodic pumpovers and délestage, than 24 months of maturation of partly new French oak. Full of spice aromas, such as black pepper, almost curry, clove and mostly coffee powder, it shows an amazing grace of silky tannins and delicate acidity." Decanter
"Savory, sweet, spicy and fresh, the 2015 Carménère di San Leonardo is pulling me closer and closer to the glass with its seductive bouquet, mixing depths of cherry and young strawberry with cracked black pepper, rosemary and sage, as white smoke combines with the slightest hint of brown sugar to set off all of the pleasure sensors in the brain. This is elegant and refined, showing silky textures playing host to tart red and a hint of black fruit, with noble tannins, as inner florals and savory herbs resonate for up to a minute, leaving just a hint of blackberry in their wake. This is a selection from San Leonardo's oldest vines of Carménère, and it's a stunner!" Vinous
"Fabulous carmenere with black licorice, blackberry and tar character. It's full-bodied with round tannins and bright acidity. Soft, yet lively. Hints of black pepper and spices. So long and flavorful. Superb wine." James Suckling

"Intense ruby. Ripe berry fruit, plus thyme, oregano and fine chocolate. Spicy herbs on the attack, some cardamom, salty, unfolds with firm, sturdy tannins, rich power, but also elegant and long." Falstaff
"This is very youthful and clearly has the structure underneath to go quite a distance. Great freshness and bite but not at all skinny. Much more aérienne than the average red bordeaux – on which it was originally modelled. Very long indeed." Jancis Robinson
"Notes of wet tobacco, dried earth, cumin, cedar and dried red plums form the basis of the nose. Structured and serious on the palate with just the right amount of fruit to balance out the backbone of firm, austere tannins." James Suckling
"San Leonardo is the iconic wine of the estate, and one of the most celebrated Bordeaux blends of Italy with its cool climate profile. The warm 2015 vintage doesn’t differ from the leaner style of the wine (compared to other Bordeaux blends), which is a good benchmark to understand the sense of elegance here. The nose sees purity of fruit (cassis) typical of Trentino Alto Adige, finely melted with leather and green pepper aromas. If you dislike wines with a slightly herbal aroma is understandable but here this touch adds another layer and the wine on the palate shines with silky, super elegant tannins. Refreshing and amazingly savoury, it plays well even with brasato or other powerful dishes of red meat." Decanter
"The 2015 San Leonardo is a classic in the making. The bouquet is wonderfully perfumed with peppery florals, mixing tart cherry and blueberry with white smoke, hints of graphite and shaved cedar. Silky textures race across a core of juicy acids and minerals, making for a ripe yet cool-toned and pleasurably tactile expression. Youthful tannins slowly make themselves known toward the close. Long, structured and spicy, the 2015 finishes with a crescendo of tart blue and black fruits, tapering off to notes of subtly sweet spice. As good as this is today, it will only get better over time. That said, it doesn’t appear that this is going to shut down anytime in the immediate future, so it’s certainly worth checking on a bottle or two before forgetting the rest in your cellar." Vinous
"The 2015 San Leonardo pours forth with a beautiful velvety appearance and sultry dark garnet color. This wine shows a lot of life and dark fruit purity with black plum, blackberry, cassis and tarry prune. There is a delightful note of black pepper that is specific to this warm and sunny vintage. The fruit shows softer and richer concentration compared to past vintages and more pulpy density that gives this edition a bigger profile in terms of mouthfeel. San Leonardo is a wine made for long aging, but the nice thing about this vintage is that the bouquet remains quite accessible at this young age. Nevertheless, I'd still suggest keeping this bottle in your cellar so that it can calmly finish its evolution." Robert Parker

The 300-year-old Tenuta San Leonardo is undisputedly one of the top vineyards in Trentino and has long been producing one of the best wines in the region, the red wine of the same name. Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga's wines were inspired by none other than Mario Incisa della Rocchetta (Tenuta San Guido/Sassicaia). The close friendship of the Marchesi is marked by a fascination for outstanding Grand Crus and as a result, top Italian wines from Bordeaux-typical grape varieties are now produced not only in Western Tuscany but also in Trento.
Before Carlo planted his first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1978, he trained his knowledge in numerous French wineries and on the Tenuta San Guido, where he finally met the Bordeaux-crazy Marchese. Mario Incisa della Rocchetta became his "oenological godfather", and the subsequent collaboration with the famous oenologist Giacomo Tachis shaped the style of the magnificent Tenuta San Leonardo from then on.
In 1982 Carlo published his first vintage of the Bordeaux blend San Leonardo, inspired by the example of Sassicaia. The result exceeded all expectations: Aromatic complexity and unique elegance immediately made the wine the flagship of the winery of the same name. The cuvée of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Carmenère and 10% Merlot is awarded the highest accolades of the Italian wine guides every year and is only released on the market if it meets the high standards of the Marchesi. For several years now, the star oenologist Carlo Ferrini has been responsible for the vinification.
In 2001 Carlo's son Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga took over the management of the family business and has remained true to his father's high quality standards. Tenuta San Leonardo has now been owned by the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga for over three decades and is located in the beautiful Lagarina Valley, right on the border with Veneto. The organic cultivation of the 30 hectares of vineyards is a matter of course here and reflects the enormous respect for the territory and its conservation.
The mountainous scenery of Monti Lessini protects the vineyards in the south of Trento from cold north winds and the Mediterranean climate of Lake Garda, together with the optimum temperature differences between day and night, create the basic conditions for the best possible growth and ripening of the grapes. In the carefully tended vineyards, other French grape varieties also thrive, which are processed into expressive wines through no less dedication.
In addition to the numerous award-winning symbol wine San Leonardo, the winery also produces its younger, primary fruity brother Terre di San Leonardo as well as a varietal Carmenère from old vines and the Merlot-based cuvée Villa Gresti. The renowned white wine tradition of the region, on the other hand, is impressively expressed in the pure Sauvignon Blanc Vette.
Trentino's wine industry is characterised by numerous cooperative wineries and is home to only a few private wineries, including the Tenuta San Leonardo. Thanks to the driving passion for the enjoyment of great Bordeaux wines and the ambition to produce equally great wines in Italy, the San Leonardo winery has become an unparalleled success story in the region.
