• Etna Rosso DOC 2019 (BIO)

      Etna Rosso DOC 2019 (BIO)

Dark, radiant ruby red. Pure and elegant, with spicy herbal aromas and fresh fruit notes of cherry and currant. Subtle with a beautiful fruity game, delicate vein of salt, yet compact and full of harmony. A Rosso with the almost Burgundian finesse and length of a Pinot Nero. SUPERIORE.DE

"The purity of fruit is so impressive here with black cherry and dried strawberry to the ash and black-tea undertones. It’s medium to full body with firm, tight tannins and a crisp finish. Floral and some citrus-zest highlights to this." James Suckling

      Etna Rosato DOC 2019 (BIO)

Subtle scent of red cherries, herbs and minerals, complex and long on the palate with grace and elegance. A fabulous rosé with a fine salty finish and worth every euro. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2019 Terre Nere Etna Rosato is actually quite savory, and especially alluring in the glass, pulling me closer with notes of raw almond, dusty dried flowers, smoky tangerine and marine-inspired minerals. It’s silky with fleshy ripe melon and white orchard fruits, but also a salty character that mixes with its vibrant acids to create tension and poise, resonating on residual acids and inner florals." • Etna Bianco Superiore DOC 2019

      Etna Bianco Superiore DOC 2019

The area around the small town of Milo is the only vineyard on Etna where an Etna Bianco is allowed to be bottled as Superiore - and for a good reason: On the steep vineyard, which consists of dozens of small terraces, only Carricante can be planted. The vines are pulled on poles made of chestnut wood like a little tree. The eastward orientation and the sea, which is not far away, allow the grapes to ripen late, thus, very constant acidity values are achieved, and the result is a white wine of an aromatic finesse and freshness, which is unparalleled even on Etna.

This historic site, called Milo, with its old vines is virtually predestined for the Etna Bianco Superiore, which is now in its 2nd vintage on the market. More floral and citrus-scented on the nose than the regular Carricante, the Superiore also has a bit more body, acidity, depth and finesse. The elegant acidity makes it vibrantly fresh and long and ensures exciting drinking flow and a nice aging potential. SUPERIORE.DE

    • "Moganazzi" Rosso Etna DOC 2018

      “Moganazzi” Rosso Etna DOC 2018

Here comes the new single-vineyard wine, similar in style to Santo Spirito but with an "autumnal" component. Bright ruby red, in the nose gravel, vanilla and a subtle mint tone, in addition some cranberry and cherry. Then fresh and exciting on the palate with sweet and sour components and a bittersweet vein. Compact tannin, which certainly deserves some more years of bottle maturity. In the final then herbal-spicy and long. SUPERIORE.DE

"Complex aromas of ripe berries with toffee, cedar and some floral undertones. Hot ash as well. The palate is full-bodied, but tight and linear with a chewy palate and lots of dried-peach and orange-peel undertones to the ripe fruit, but always linear and focused." James Suckling

    • "Calderara Sottana" Rosso Etna DOC 2017

“Calderara Sottana” Rosso Etna DOC 2017

Calderara Sottana is an impressive wine: dark red forest fruits, orange peel and flowers in the fragrance. Full-bodied, but not fat on the palate. Juicy fruit, firm, close-meshed tannins. Brilliant and of great finesse! SUPERIORE.DE

"Pale-medium garnet. Integral, nutty oak, dusty minerality, some smoky tones, rose petal and a touch of spice over dense red-cherry fruit. Very attractive nose. Intense, focused palate of spice, smoke, maraschino and fine, fairly firm, primary tannins. Lots of density and all the ingredients for a fine future." Jancis Robinson

"Bright deep red. Flinty floral nuances complement red cherry and herbal notes on the enticing nose. Bright, juicy and round on entry, then showcases a stiff tannic spine and building alcohol-derived warmth with red cherry nectar and smoky flavors lingering nicely. Repeating, vibrant red cherry and sweet spice notes add complexity on the close." Vinous

"A fragrant red, offering lilac and sandalwood notes that lace the ripe raspberry, iron and Earl Grey tea flavors, echoing on the finish. Deftly knit, with a sense of grace and poise to the interaction of the fine-grained tannins and mouthwatering acidity." Wine Spectator

"More dried-fruit character in this than in others from here; it’s a red driven by dried strawberries, frozen raspberries, cherry liqueur and dried herbs. Good savoriness and meatiness to the full-bodied palate, which rolls neatly through the underlying richness with poise and finesse. The tannins are round yet structured; the finish is medium-long." • "San Lorenzo" Rosso Etna DOC 2018

“San Lorenzo” Rosso Etna DOC 2018

Strictly limited in each vintage, the Cru San Lorenzo comes from 4 hectares of vineyards in the district of the same name in the town of Randazzo. The vines are over 70 years old and grow about 750 meters above sea level, the soil consists almost exclusively of fine volcanic sand. The terroir in the small Contrada San Lorenzo was formed by lava flows and deposits of volcanic origin, which occurred between 60,000 and 15,000 years ago. This exceptional wine is particularly rich, fruity, and has very soft tannins that make it velvety and lush on the palate for a never-ending finish. Great! SUPERIORE.DE

"Fragrant and loaded with finesse, this opens with enticing aromas of Mediterranean brush, violet, crushed lemon thyme and star anise. On the savory, focused palate, notes of licorice, hazelnut and flinty mineral accent a juicy red berry core. Polished tannins and fresh acidity provide seamless support and balance." Wine Enthusiast

"Very complex aromas of dried berries and strawberries with orange peel, perfume and cherry. It’s full-to medium-bodied with a tight, linear palate and fine tannins, as well as zesty acidity. Give it time to open." James Suckling

“Calderara Sottana” Rosso Etna DOC 2018

Dark red fruits, orange peel and flowers in the fragrance. Then juicy fruit, wonderful depth and a finely chiselled tannin structure. In the departure a subtle sharpness and always present the outstanding structure, length and elegance! SUPERIORE.DE

    • "Le Vigne Niche Contrada Montalto" Bianco Etna DOC 2019 <br>MAGNUM

“Le Vigne Niche Contrada Montalto” Bianco Etna DOC 2019 · MAGNUM

This debut vintage comes from the small vineyard Montalto, situated on the southern slope of the Etna at an altitude of about 950 m, which has taken the top position in the squad of single vineyard Carricante. In its overall impression and aroma it is the most balanced and at the same time most exciting of all Etna Bianco from Terre Nere, here the whole Etna package is available in exactly the right dose: Minerality, saltiness, fruitiness and a perfect trace of flint in the nose. On the palate it is vibrant and fine, with an almost Burgundian elegance, finesse and length. SUPERIORE.DE

This Carricante from up to 100 year old vines from a small single vineyard leaves nothing to its varietal and terroir origin. Fine fruity fragrance, mineral and with a fresh sea breeze. Powerful, well structured, fine wood note, balanced and long in the taste. SUPERIORE.DE

"This is the most subtle and polished white from Etna I have had, offering a dense, integrated palate of apple, pineapple and stone character with some lemon grass and lemon curd. It’s dense and so focused with so much going on. Tight now, but promises a beautiful future." James Suckling

“Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro Delle Rose” Rosso Etna DOC 2015 · MAGNUM

Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro Delle Rose smells of roses and small red berries. It is a heavy, tannic wine that requires a little patience but finds its balance over time. A wine of exceptional finesse with great intellect. SUPERIORE.DE

"So much hibiscus on the complex nose of this Etna Rosso as well as orange rind, citrus, elderberries, wild strawberry compote, cranberries and hints of vanilla. Full body, and a an incredibly velvety texture. Layers upon layers of crunchy fruit, tons of tension from the vibrant acidity and a long finish." James Suckling

"Bright red. Ripe, sweetly spicy aromas and flavors of red cherry, medicinal herbs and minerals. Tougher than most vintages of this wine and slow to open, this is a more shut down version of Feudo di Mezzo than is typical for this Contrada. Opens slowly with aeration, finishing long and succulent on the classically dry finish." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

"A big, tightly knit version, this silky red shows pretty baked raspberry, citrus peel and tea leaf notes tightly enmeshed with the dense and chewy tannins, while a streak of smoky mineral echoes on the finish." Wine Spectator

“Santo Spirito” Rosso Etna DOC 2015 · MAGNUM

Santo Spirito is a wonderfully complex wine. It combines firmness, strength, structure and density with the aromas of dark cherries and spicy herbal notes and concludes with a furiously long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright red. Very perfumed nose of red cherry, raspberry jam, cinnamon, nutmeg and minerals complicated by tar and shoe polish. Clean, fresh and juicy, but with a sultry quality to the mineral but also ripe red berry and cherry flavors. Clean and fresh on the long, stoney finish. A knockout Santo Spirito that combines size and luscious sweetness like no other Etna Rosso from Terre Nere this year, but it doesn’t quite have the depth or complexity of the best wines from the estate this year." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

"Fantastic aromas of flowers, dark berries and cherries follow through to a full body, round and velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. Needs a year or to two soften the tannins." James Suckling

"Coffee bean and dried sage accents thread through the rich dried cherry and fig cake flavors in this chewy, medium- to full-bodied red. This is bright and expressive now, but decant or age this to enjoy all its nuance. Firm, herbed finish." Wine Spectator

Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro Delle Rose smells of roses and small red berries. It is a heavy, tannic wine that requires a little patience but finds its balance over time. A wine of exceptional finesse with great intellect. SUPERIORE.DE

"Medium dense ruby with light edge. Very intense and clear nose, full of fresh cherries, some raspberry, crunchy. Juicy and animating on the palate, fine-meshed, substantial tannin, lots of fresh cherry." Falstaff

"Pale ruby. Maraschino cherry with smoky, savoury overtones and cherry-kernel-like nutty oak notes. Firmly structured, slightly grainy tannins, with crisp acidity but with enough density of cranberry and red cherry fruit to hold it in balance. Long. Youthful and needs time to come together." Jancis Robinson

"This wine is slightly savory and balsamic in character. The 2016 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro Delle Rose (98% Nerello Mascalese and 2% Nerello Cappuccio) opens to tangy notes of medicinal herb and eucalyptus essence with dark berry fruit, plum and black currant. Like the many other wines from this vintage, the wine is accessible and immediate, making it a good choice for those who can't wait to pop the cork as well as those who do have the patience to wait (5 years or more). The mouthfeel is thin and compact. Some 7,000 bottles were made." Robert Parker

"Exudes notes of lavender and thyme, with Turkish spices accenting the flavors of macerated cherry and raspberry fruit." Wine Spectator

"Pale-medium ruby. Crushed rock, vanilla scent and something almost minty. Cranberry and red-cherry fruit. Sweet-sour palate fruit with a bitterness reminiscent of Campari. Compact, fairly firm, chalky tannins that need time to unwind. Long, dried herb and spice finish." Jancis Robinson

"A fragrant, medium- to full-bodied red that shows impeccable balance and integration, layering fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity with flavors of ripe strawberry, cured tobacco and star anise, balanced by a bright hint of pomegranate. The sculpted tannins show more presence on the long, minerally finish." Wine Spectator

"Sour cherries, ripe strawberries, heather, rosemary, cedar, sweet tobacco and red licorice all spring from the glass. The full-bodied palate remains racy throughout, painting a precisely framed, confident portrait of subtle berries with loads of acidity crunch." James Suckling

About the winemakersTenuta delle Terre NereSicily
    Tenuta delle Terre Nere

You need good shoes if you want to go to your vineyards with Marco de Grazia. Best mountain boots. Because that's where you actually go mountaineering. Yeah, you could call it climbing in some places.

Marco de Grazia is well known in the international fine wine scene. You could say worldwide. He was one of the first in Italy to bring together several up-and-coming wineries and was thus able to achieve remarkable export successes. He was co-inventor and engine of the Barolo Boys.

In his constant search for good and authentic wines, he arrived in Sicily in 2002 and tasted Rosso dell'Etna - red wine from Etna. And was fascinated. From the wine, from the bizarre landscape with the black soils and from the introverted people who harvested there in many working hours the lowest yields of gnarled ancient wine trees. That's why there weren't twenty wineries left. Today there are ten times as many and wine from Etna is a sought-after speciality.

Marco and his brother Iano de Grazia, who joined in, are not innocent of this at all. Their commitment and fairly rapid success sparked the interest of some major wine producers, who eventually all invested around Etna.

The highest sites of the Tenuta delle Terre Nere stretch almost up to one third to the northern flank of the mighty towering and always smoking volcano Etna. From about 600 m up to almost 1,000 m above sea level. The higher, the steeper it gets. And rockier. The highest sites - called Contrade here - are real rock terraces. These "rocks" are black. Weathered lava. Hence Tenuta delle Terre Nere. The manor with the black floors.

You could write a book when Marco pulls his floppy hat into his face and starts telling stories. Because he has a lot to tell. From his locations, which he also likes to call "cru" and with which he draws comparisons with Burgundy. If one compares the wines, one also understands this, because "Rosso dell'Etna" from individual sites (Cru or here Contrade) could be understood as a combination of Barbaresco and Burgundy.

The winery is located on the northern slopes of the volcano, between Solicchiata and Randazzo. In the middle of the combed green of the vine rows on black soil lies the striking red house with the cellar. And here it is again, the comparison with Burgundy - "if one would compare the wine-growing area around Etna with Burgundy, then these sites would be here the Côte d'Or des Etna" says Marco de Grazia.

Already in his first vintages (2002) Marco de Grazia decided to vinify the individual "Crus" separately, because the soils and microclimates are so different. Even within a single small plot, which may have one hectare, the differences can be considerable due to the former eruptions and lava flows, the soils being of different ages - and a height difference of 200 metres.
Due to the altitude, it is relatively cool and always windy, even in midsummer. Offshore wind - after all, Mount Etna is 3,350 m high. And during the day the winds blow from the nearby sea across the land. All sites have been farmed organically since the beginning, some of them have been in organic farming for generations.

Feudo di Mezzo is the largest site in the region, which is why its volcanic soil is interspersed with various ancient lava flows. 600-700 m above sea level with 40-80 year old vines. The heart is called "Il Quadro delle Rose", from here comes a very elegant and complex Etna Rosso DOC, from Nerello Mascalese.

Caldera Sottana is the steepest and hardest rocky vineyard. Grapes - 50 to 100 years old - only 5 tons per hectare. 14 ha red (98% Nerello Mascalese, 2% Nerello Cappuccio) and 3.5 ha white (Carricante). A floor made of volcanic ash, black pumice stone and solid volcanic rock.

One hectare of it, divided into two small plots next to the cellar, is called "La Vigna di Don Peppino". These vineyards have survived the phylloxera and are still root true vines, more than 130 years old. A man cared for her all her life, for more than 70 years; without him they would hardly have survived. Today they are magnificent little trees. Low yield, but elegant and structured. Thanks to Don Peppino.

Santo Spirito is the most scenic location with a great view. At 700-760m above sea level, 40-100 year old vines grow on "younger" volcanic soils rich in nutrients and minerals. Around the vineyards grows a lot of green, meadows and wild herbs, and so are the wines from this location. Quite intense and finely spicy.

San Lorenzo is the "newcomer", but with sticks up to one hundred years old. 4 hectares of magnificent Nerello grapes on volcanic and rocky soils. At about 750 m above sea level you can reach mini yields of about 5 t/ha. These small berry grapes produce complex, finely structured and elegant red wines that are among the best in the region.

Guardiola is the highest "Contrada". One of the first vineyards to be purchased by Marco di Grazia and his brother Iano. 800 to almost 1,000 m above sea level, windy, cool, barren. Volcano, basalt, hard and steep. Extreme handwork, many hours of work for just three and a half to four and a half tons of grapes. This effort is only worthwhile for lovers, because they appreciate this herbal spice, this wonderful, clear dark fruit, structure and complexity, as well as elegance and potential for many years. "The wines of Marco di Grazia have helped to put Etna at the top of the geological map. Its consistency in winemaking is one of the most important guarantees for the future of this up-and-coming wine region". Robert Parker
