    • "Controdanza" Rosso Sicilia Noto DOC 2017

“Controdanza” Rosso Sicilia Noto DOC 2017

Country Dance (controdanza) is a typical dance in which man and woman face each other and unite in graceful movements - depending on the gender, the dancers interpret the music in their own way. It's the same with this wine: Nero d'Aola and Merlot - opposites attract each other, as is well known, and with the right empathy, they can adjust wonderfully to each other, creating harmony and contrast at the same time.

Bright purple. Mulberry and plum contrast with incense and balsamic notes. The grapes all come from calcareous soils, which in turn bridges the gap and makes this young wine balanced and harmonious. Soft tannins and a beautifully integrated delicate acidity carry Controdanza into a smooth, medium-long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

      “Mamertino” Rosso Sicilia DOC 2017

Elegant cuvée with spicy aromas of black cherry, plum and white pepper and an earthy undertone. Clear in taste with hints of blackberry, the fruit always very fine, beautiful spice, including star anise, very rounded. Ends with elegance and a touch of lemon peel. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2017 Mamertino is a unique wine that represents a DOC wine appellation in Milazzo (in the northern tip of Sicily) that gets very little use as far as I can tell. The traditional blend is Nero d'Avola and Nocera, and the wine is easy in approach and execution. There's nothing too complicated here—just fresh cherry and blackberry followed by earthy tones and some subtle mineral or sea breeze nuances." Robert Parker

    • "Eruzione 1614" Nerello Mascalese Sicilia DOC 2017

“Eruzione 1614” Nerello Mascalese Sicilia DOC 2017

In the history of Etna, the eruption of 1614 is legendary, because it lasted ten years and is thus the longest recorded eruption of the still active volcano. A very impressive and fitting name for Planeta's Etna series of equally impressive wines.

It could hardly be more autochthonous: From the hotspot on the east coast of Sicily, from the slopes of Etna, comes this excellent wine from the Nerello Mascalese grape. Bright cherry red, fine scent of raspberry and blood orange, gripping, taut acidity, silky tannin and a lively elegance with beautiful minerality. Great, long and unique! SUPERIORE.DE

"Gorgeous sweet cherry fruit. So fragrant it is almost floral but on the palate there is a lovely dry texture, stony, almost chalky in its elegance. Extremely pure but with a savoury quality that is decidedly mineral, long. Taut and juicy with a gentle chewiness on the finish." Jancis Robinson

"Planeta's 2017 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 reveals a delicate and poised personality with small berry aromas and licorice followed by smoke, tar and ash. The wine delivers a subdued mouthfeel that slowly grows in intensity and length. You really taste the grape here, Nerello Mascalese, in its most naked and pure form." Robert Parker

"Delicious and loaded with finesse, this Nerello Mascalese delivers aromas and flavors of ripe black cherry, blackberry and star anise, while smoky flint adds depth. Lithe, elegant tannins provide the polished framework." Wine Enthusiast

    • "Eruzione 1614" Carricante Sicilia DOC 2018

“Eruzione 1614” Carricante Sicilia DOC 2018

In the history of Etna, the eruption of 1614 is legendary, because it lasted ten years and is thus the longest recorded eruption of the still active volcano. A very impressive and fitting name for Planeta's Etna series of equally impressive wines.

Carricante from Planeta's Etna winery is an exceptional growth full of freshness, energy and minerality. Under exclusive conditions, on volcanic soils and at altitudes of 870 meters, this noble grape variety thrives. A wonderful pleasure. SUPERIORE.DE

"Lemon-rind, pear and green-apple aromas follow through to a full body with a round, creamy palate of ripe and dried fruit that comes across mostly tropical. Creamy texture. Really tangy." James Suckling

"Delicious, crisp and showing a great depth of flavor, this white from the slopes of Mount Etna doles out juicy yellow apple, peach, wild herb and savory, almost salty, mineral notes. Made with Carricante and 10% Riesling, it has racy acidity, energy and captivating mineral tension before finishing on mouthwatering notes of honeyed lemon drop candy." Wine Enthusiast

Passito Bianco di Noto DOC 2018

Light golden yellow, fine bouquet of orange blossoms, some quince and peach. Sparkling on the palate with surprisingly lively acidity, spreads nicely, in the long final again orange peel and some grapefruit. SUPERIORE.DE

"This opens with aromas of dried apricot, marmalade and jasmine. The fruity aromas carry over to the creamy palate together with dried exotic fruit and bright acidity. Notes of pine nuts and vanilla emerge on the persistent finish." Wine Enthusiast

"The 2018 Passito di Noto (packaged in a 500-milliliter bottle) opens to a beautifully luminous color with bright golden highlights. You get Sicilian candied orange peel, sweet almond paste and lots of fragrant honey. This wine is absolutely seductive and delicious. Pair it with dried biscuits or cassata with candied fruit." • "Santa Cecilia" Sicilia Noto DOC 2017

Strong, bright ruby red. This 100% Nero d'Avola is an intoxicating wine with its rich, fruity and spicy scent of blackcurrants, cherries, undergrowth, liquorice and dark chocolate. The soft but firm, warm taste of ripe berry fruit, fine spice and the noble tannin are very inspiring. SUPERIORE.DE

    • "Eruzione 1614" Riesling Terre Siciliane IGT 2016

In the history of Etna, the eruption of 1614 is legendary because it lasted ten years and is the longest recorded eruption of the volcano, which is still active today. A very impressive and fitting name for Planeta's Etna series of equally impressive wines.

Riesling from Etna? Initially an experiment, admittedly. But it can truly be described as a success: the newest scion of Planeta's Etna family with delicate pale colour with green reflections; in the nose with a great variety of aromas, such as white apple, plum, lemon and yellow flowers. Perfect, dry on the palate, with mild acidity, fine minerality and (especially with increasing maturity) pronounced fruitiness. SUPERIORE.DE

    • "Maroccoli" Syrah Sicilia Menfi DOC 2015 <br>MAGNUM

“Maroccoli” Syrah Sicilia Menfi DOC 2015 · MAGNUM

Fresh, shiny ruby. The Syrah convinces with its intense and ripe bouquet with hints of figs, red currants, pickled cherries, blueberries, spices and vanilla. Velvety, noble tannins accompany the opulent and lively structure until the persistent final. SUPERIORE.DE

"The overlay of dried violets, lavender and spices works very well with the more overt vanilla and tar notes. Soft and plummy with ripe tannins and plenty of concentration, but there's a fine line of bright acidity within the texture." James Suckling

"Syrah and Sicily are two peas in a pod, and the 2015 Menfi Syrah Maroccoli affirms this fact with exuberant precision and charm. This wine is packed tight with dark fruit, tobacco, spice, bacon fat and even a touch of bitter chocolate. Both Syrah and Sicily love the sunshine and the summer heat, and luckily, both of these things were delivered with abundance in this happy vintage." Robert Parker

    About the winemakersPlanetaSicily
    Planeta

If you want to visit all five wineries of the family winery Planeta with its almost 370 hectares of vineyards, you have to make a journey through the traditionally favoured growing areas of Sicily. The journey could start in the west in the province of Agrigento, continue south in the provinces of Ragusa and Syracuse and end in the north-east on Mount Etna in the new winery in Castiglione di Sicilia, harmoniously integrated into the landscape. Because some of Planeta's most splendid locations are in Menfi, Sambuca, Noto, Vittoria, Capo Milazzo and on the northern edge of the still active volcano. The family pays maximum respect to the vines and wines that have grown historically and are rooted in tradition. She is active in research and prefers old native grape varieties. Planeta also maintains personal relations with other producers on the island in order to promote the development of Sicily as a wine region.

At Planeta, clever marketing and wise winemaking go hand in hand. According to Francesca Planeta, ex-product manager at Nestlé and Vinum reader, the queen of Italy, it was a long time coming "Donne del Vino" as unfine, local grape varieties. To avoid alienating potential customers, the family first planted international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet and Chardonnay. She succeeded in conquering the market with these wines and then also connoisseurs for Nero d'Avola, Grecanico, Carricante, Moscato di Noto, Frappato and Nerello Mascalese. It is also thanks to the winery that the cultivation of Fiano has been successfully tested in Sicily.

The wine company Planeta was founded in 1995 in the south of the island, in the province of Sambuca di Sicilia on Lake Arancio. With state-of-the-art cellar technology, the dynamic cousins Francesca, Alessio and - since the turn of the millennium - Santi Planeta quickly led the company to the top of Italy with the support of Alessio's father Diego Planeta, President of the Cantine Settesoli in Menfi. Four years after its foundation and before the regional expansion, the wine house was voted the best winery in the country by the wine guideGambero Rosso.

The grape harvest in the environmentally friendly winery lasts three months. It begins in August with the precocious varieties in south-western Menfi. The harvest ends at the end of October with the Nerello Mascalese on Mount Etna. All of Planeta's wines - around 50 percent of which are exported - have a personal style in common that expresses the terroirs of the various vineyards particularly well. La Foresteria, a hotel complex in the province of Agrigento, also belongs to the family property. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the Sicily brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate. Enormous credit goes to them."Robert Parker
