• "Rossojbleo" Rosso Sicilia DOC 2017 (BIO)

“Rossojbleo” Rosso Sicilia DOC 2017 (BIO)

A wonderful introduction to the world of Gulfi: precise aromas of red sour cherries, stone minerals and aromatic herbs. Fresh and juicy, with a delicate spicy note and a refreshing aftertaste in the long finish. A charming, medium-bodied wine with a harmonious taste and a wonderful drinking flow. SUPERIORE.DE

"Almost like a sour cherry juice in the fragrance, light sweetness in the beginning, then an ancient tannin with a slightly greenish background, fresh acidity, but the intense fruit keeps the whole in balance and gives the wine an animating charisma." Falstaff

    • "Reseca" Nerello Mascalese Terre Siciliane IGT 2012 (BIO)

“Reseca” Nerello Mascalese Terre Siciliane IGT 2012 (BIO)

Sweet cherries, dried flowers, liquorice and spices in the bouquet. Also on the palate the elegant style continues with silky tannin and restraint in all components. A rather slim red with all the advantages of the volcanic terroir of Etna. SUPERIORE.DE

"Vivid red. Fresh spice-and floral-accented aromas of strawberry and cola, with a flinty topnote. Smooth and expressive on the palate, offering sweet if not especially dense red and dark cherry flavors complicated by a touch of cumin and mint. Polished tannins provide support on the fresh, brisk, lovely finish. Like the 2011 Reseca, this is not a monster of concentration." Antonio Galloni

    • "Neromaccarj" Nero d'Avola Terre Siciliane IGT 2016 (BIO)

“Neromaccarj” Nero d’Avola Terre Siciliane IGT 2016 (BIO)

Dark colour, beautiful bouquet of Mediterranean herbs and balsamic notes, ripe, fruity morello cherry, rich in silky tannins, the magnificent Nero d'Avola site wine Neromaccarj. SUPERIORE.DE

"From a low-altitude, sea-facing vineyard site, the 2016 NeroMàccarj shows the ripe and succulent side of Nero d'Avola. The wine opens to an inky dark appearance with aromas that are thick and broad, creating a tall wall of plummy black fruit. The wine is very immediate and impactful, and you don't need to do too much digging before you recognize all those broad-brush aromas on the bouquet. That bitterness that you sometimes get in the NeroSanloré does not appear here. Some 6,500 bottles were released." Robert Parker

"Deep ruby. Amazing floral and spicy nose of black fruit, herbs and grilled steak. Then rich and tactile, but vibrant and energetic, with well delineated flavors similar to the aromas. Finishes long with mounting but relatively polished tannic bite." Vinous

    • "Nerobufaleffj" Nero d'Avola Terre Siciliane IGT 2016 (BIO)

“Nerobufaleffj” Nero d’Avola Terre Siciliane IGT 2016 (BIO)

Nerobafaleffj is a very unusual wine for Sicily. It offers an aromatic intensity not found anywhere else in southern Italy. The bouquet is explosive with strong cherries, dried blackberries, tobacco and spices. Subtle hints of cinnamon and crushed carnation. An exotic red of high concentration and power with a wonderfully complex, long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2016 NeroBufaleffj is a bit tighter and greener perhaps compared to the other two single-vineyard expressions of Nero d'Avola I tasted from Gulfi in this flight. This is a mid-weight wine with bright cherry, sour plum, wet earth and grilled aromas of Sicilian herb or wild fennel and caper seed. The Bufaleffi growing site shows mixed soils, and you get some rusty nail and crushed limestone here as well. Some 6,500 bottles were made." Robert Parker

"Luminous deep red. Aromas of red cherry, minerals, Oriental spices and vanilla on the refined nose. Then luscious, rich, deep and multilayered with spices, herbs and aromatic oak notes dominating the underlying red and spicy flavors beneath. Finishes long but with less than the usual nectar-like quality that typifies this cru; undoubtedly, a much more elegant version of Nerobufaleffj, a wine that often reaches Amarone-like levels of richness and lusciousness. This very young wine is a potential knockout; still brooding and folded upon itself; it’s a beauty that requires time in your cellar, and watch it develop into something special." Vinous

    • "Nerosanloré" Nero d'Avola Terre Siciliane IGT 2016 (BIO)

“Nerosanloré" Nero d’Avola Terre Siciliane IGT 2016 (BIO)

An extraordinary character and powerful Nero d'Avola is the Nerosanloré. From a beautiful vineyard in Pacchino, the area of origin of the famous vine. Mineral, vital, mature, elegant, long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Luminous red. Precise, brooding aromas of ripe red cherry, flint, orange rind, cinnamon, lavender and violet, complicated by iodine and earth. Silky and sappy with refined but very concentrated extract, this smothers the taste buds but stays vibrant and not at all heavy, offering lovely definition and lift to the red cherry, raspberry, floral and mineral flavors. Finishes extremely deep and long, with ultra-suave tannins, mesmerizing inner-mouth perfume and extreme refinement; very Barolo-like. A lovely multilayered wine showcasing the elegant side of Nero d’Avola that very few producers ever manage to showcase." Vinous

    About the winemakers
    Gulfi
    Sicily
    Gulfi

From the climatically very favoured extreme south of Sicily between Vittoria, Noto and Pachino, exciting wines have been coming for decades, which do not at all resemble the sometimes even jam-sweet tasting Nero d'Avola plants from other island regions. The most important wine of this princely grape variety is the family winery Gulfi from the small town of Chiaramonte Gulfi, advised by the oenologist and agronomist Salvo Foti, for its unmistakable style. The fascinating, complex and fine-tuned organic wines of the visionary and determined owner of the Vito Catania estate vary greatly depending on the soil conditions and the extension of the vineyards. However, they all ripen under excellent conditions and have a surprisingly fresh acid structure.

The history of the Gulfi winery in the province of Ragusa began with a farm inherited from the father with a vineyard in the cool and calcareous Monti Iblei. Immediately Vito Catania, who already as a child followed the technical discussions of the parents in the domestic environment with interest, drove the development despite smaller setbacks briskly forward. The Milanese businessman with Sicilian roots quickly developed the beautiful property into a model business. From the very beginning, Catania's declared aim has been to produce wines that reflect their terroir uncompromisingly, without quickly following ephemeral fashion trends. Especially the Nero d'Avola helped the Catania/Foti leadership duo, building on the tradition of previous generations, to reassert themselves and establish a clear identity.

With manure improved by green manure, the soils which are particularly suitable for viticulture and very diverse from a geological point of view are made fertile. Additional irrigation is not required in plots planted almost exclusively with autochthonous varieties, such as the ancient white Carricante grape. The vines, which are up to 70 years old, are raised in the classic Alberello system. It should also be mentioned that the Catania family selected clones from Etna and planted them together with some Chardonnay grapes from Burgundy on the slopes of the Monti Iblei.

The Gulfi winery is located near Randazzo (on Mount Etna), Chiaramonte Gulfi (in the southwest) and Pachino (in the east at sea level). The historical plots of Maccari, Bufaleffi, Baroni and San Lorenzo, acquired in the Val di Noto and recultivated with great effort, provide the grapes for some of Sicily's most expressive single vineyard wines, which can be enjoyed without regret even at an advanced age. The vinification of all Kreszenzen is carried out as naturally as possible and without falsifying technical tricks, the aging in wooden barrels very carefully. SUPERIORE.DE

"When I think of producers of Nero d’Avola wines, comes to mind as one of the first names Gulfi. The winery produces some vineyard wines that offer the chance to explore the different nuances of this great Sicilian variety."Robert Parker
