The westernmost part of Sicily can probably look back on an already longer winegrowing tradition than the Italian mainland. However, the history of the Firriato winery has only been written since the mid-1980s. Unlike many other renowned winegrowers on the island, Salvatore and Vinzia Di Gaetano, out of love for their homeland and for local agriculture, rely with enthusiasm, wisdom, a great deal of knowledge, a great deal of tact and a very pronounced environmental awareness predominantly on local grape varieties. Together with respected oenologists and inspired by valuable new insights from Australian producers in winemaking, the family developed their own wine style in the 1990s. On far more than 300 hectares of vineyards the property, which is managed according to strict ecological principles, has grown in the meantime. Around three quarters of the reliable Azienda Firriato wines, which are distinguished by their exemplary style and are inexpensive at every quality level, are exported to more than 30 countries around the world.
The winery is located in the town of Paceco, near Trapani, and is highly appreciated by the international wine world. The wineries are magnificent and irreproachable. The environmentally friendly farming methods of the winegrower couple supported by daughter Irene and her husband Federico Lombardo di Monte Iato have been certified in all areas since 2012. In addition to the estates in the Trapani region, such as the Tenuta Baglio Soria, the Cavanera am Ätna farm in Castiglione di Sicilia and the Calamoni farm on the island of Favignana have recently joined other naturally cultivated branches of the vine kingdom. On the largest Egadi island, the Di Gaetano family cultivates a magnificent five-hectare vineyard in the immediate vicinity of the coast, exclusively in classical Alberello education. The soils consist of red sand and tuff.
The vineyards are dominated by typical Sicilian grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Grillo, which are accompanied by a number of local varieties, some of which are less well-known, such as Cataratta and Ansonica. However, international plants such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah or Chardonnay are also cultivated. Since many of the quality wines full of character, aging in stainless steel and/or oak barrels, are of pure variety and are blended from high-quality individual sites, they can justifiably be described as terroir wines. The noble wines of the house Firriato are always highly appreciated by the international wine press. For example, the wine guide Gambero Rossoregularly awards the coveted Tre Bicchieri to products from the Sicilian winery. SUPERIORE.DE
