• "Harmonium" Nero d'Avola Sicilia DOC 2013

“Harmonium” Nero d’Avola Sicilia DOC 2013

Harmonium - natural and original unique wine. Intense red, interspersed with bright reflections, it glows in the glass. The scent of ripe red berries and oriental spices is beguiling. Elegance, finesse and persistence characterize the taste, which is dense on the palate and reveals above all a solid tannin chassis, but also a formidable structure. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling ruby with light purple. Opens with slightly smoky notes, lots of cloves and pepper. On the palate juicy and with lots of fruit, it flows calmly, round, with fine spice in the aftertaste". Falstaff

"Bright red. Perfumed aromas and flavors of red cherry, minerals, underbrush and licorice. Light and lively for such a big wine, with only a trace of alcohol-derived warmth emerging on the back end. Well done." Vinous

"Dark plums, some blackberry essence, ivy, bark and hints of dust. Plenty of crunchy fruit on the full-bodied palate, which is dense but nicely lifted by some refreshing acidity. Chewy finish." James Suckling

    • "Ribeca" Perricone Sicilia DOC 2014

      “Ribeca” Perricone Sicilia DOC 2014

Strong in character and masculine, Ribeca is full of fruit, fresh and persistent. Its pleasantly spicy fragrance of dark berries, spices and tobacco and the harmonious, hearty-fruity taste make this pure-bred Perricone an extraordinarily well-done, authentic Sicilian. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright ruby red with sparkling core. In the nose restrained, only delicately after raspberry syrup. Juicy and salty on the palate, carried by a slightly mineral note, powerful and clear, in the second part gripping, light drying." Falstaff

"The 2014 Sicilia Perricone Ribeca is a dense red wine with a sharp and well-defined bouquet. You get generous tones of black fruit, dried cherry, pipe tobacco and camphor ash. This is a full-bodied red to pair with grilled meats or fennel-stuffed pork. There is a lot of power here with almost 15% alcohol." Robert Parker

"The dried-clove and roasted-nutmeg character is very endearing, and the dried cherries and redcurrants are pretty. Rich and flavorful, but firm and dialed-in, this sports a lithe complexion of tannins." James Suckling

    • "Camelot" Rosso Sicilia DOC 2014

      “Camelot” Rosso Sicilia DOC 2014

An opulent drop is the Bordeaux blend Camelot: the nose is spoiled with hints of blackcurrants, plums, cocoa and nutmeg, and then on the palate a powerful and compact, yet wonderfully soft manner. SUPERIORE.DE

    About the winemakers
    Firriato
    Sicily
    Firriato

The westernmost part of Sicily can probably look back on an already longer winegrowing tradition than the Italian mainland. However, the history of the Firriato winery has only been written since the mid-1980s. Unlike many other renowned winegrowers on the island, Salvatore and Vinzia Di Gaetano, out of love for their homeland and for local agriculture, rely with enthusiasm, wisdom, a great deal of knowledge, a great deal of tact and a very pronounced environmental awareness predominantly on local grape varieties. Together with respected oenologists and inspired by valuable new insights from Australian producers in winemaking, the family developed their own wine style in the 1990s. On far more than 300 hectares of vineyards the property, which is managed according to strict ecological principles, has grown in the meantime. Around three quarters of the reliable Azienda Firriato wines, which are distinguished by their exemplary style and are inexpensive at every quality level, are exported to more than 30 countries around the world.

The winery is located in the town of Paceco, near Trapani, and is highly appreciated by the international wine world. The wineries are magnificent and irreproachable. The environmentally friendly farming methods of the winegrower couple supported by daughter Irene and her husband Federico Lombardo di Monte Iato have been certified in all areas since 2012. In addition to the estates in the Trapani region, such as the Tenuta Baglio Soria, the Cavanera am Ätna farm in Castiglione di Sicilia and the Calamoni farm on the island of Favignana have recently joined other naturally cultivated branches of the vine kingdom. On the largest Egadi island, the Di Gaetano family cultivates a magnificent five-hectare vineyard in the immediate vicinity of the coast, exclusively in classical Alberello education. The soils consist of red sand and tuff.

The vineyards are dominated by typical Sicilian grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Grillo, which are accompanied by a number of local varieties, some of which are less well-known, such as Cataratta and Ansonica. However, international plants such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah or Chardonnay are also cultivated. Since many of the quality wines full of character, aging in stainless steel and/or oak barrels, are of pure variety and are blended from high-quality individual sites, they can justifiably be described as terroir wines. The noble wines of the house Firriato are always highly appreciated by the international wine press. For example, the wine guide Gambero Rossoregularly awards the coveted Tre Bicchieri to products from the Sicilian winery. SUPERIORE.DE

"Firriato always marches to the sounds of his own drum. The wine house is part of a first wave of larger companies investing in the Etna region and is the first producer to grow wine beyond the coastal region of Trapani on the dry Egadi islands. In my opinion, the wine style in Sicily today brings out the best out of oak wood."Robert Parker
