The Gallura is located in the extreme northeast of Sardinia and is especially known for the Costa Smeralda with its white beaches, the emerald color of the water and the bizarre looking granite rocks. In the north of the rough, mountainous and relatively infertile area, however, there are also extensive areas with vineyards. This is where the career of Bruno Zanatta, who comes from the region of Treviso in Veneto, began in 1973. First of all, the then still young oenologist acquired a sound knowledge of the wine territory and the Sardinian soil. It was only thirty years later that Zanatta bought his first vineyards in Olbia and planted Vermentino and Cannonau, the most important red variety in Sardinia, before acquiring further vineyards in 2005 and considerably expanding the area dedicated to viticulture. But only after the construction of the winery in the south-east of the fourth largest city of Sardinia in 2008 was it possible for the winemaker, who also has a branch in Treviso in the Prosecco area, to precisely monitor the entire production process together with his son Marco - also an oenologist.
The Vermentino and Cannonau grape varieties find ideal growing conditions in the Sardinian region. The soils consisting of granite weathering with stony, almost rocky subsoil are permeable to water. The vines must therefore have deep roots in order to absorb sufficient water and nutrients. The fact that it is cooler in Gallura than in the rest of the island and that the temperature differences between day and night are high has a positive effect on the density of Zanatta's white wines Vermentino di Gallura DOCG and Vermentino di Sardegna DOC. The first drop is a very distinctive wine, balanced and well structured. The land, the geographical location and the low grape yields give it its unmistakable characteristics. With the Cannonau di Sardegna DOC, the Sardinian estate has another high-quality drop of red colour in its small assortment.
Bruno Zanatta appreciates Venetian precision and hard work on the second largest island in the Mediterranean. As a young cellar master he first worked in the Cantina del Vermentino Monti. Before acquiring his first vineyards, the passionate and experienced winemaker also worked for several decades in various wineries in the Gallura. Zanatta has always been very cautious in purchasing its vineyards and has only selected sites that promise the best grape quality. SUPERIORE.DE
