The four historical estates of the Counts Zecca are entwined around wild stories of wolves, miraculous events on full moon nights, resistance in the bloody wars against the Saracens and of course lovers, many of them without a "happy ending". These legends are unforgotten and gave their names to the wineries or the wines.
No wonder, since 1580, when Francesco Antonio Zecca moved from Naples to Leverano, the history of the Zecca family is closely linked to the history of Salento, the central wine region of Apulia. At that time, the region between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas was a main supplier of grapes and cask wine. The Zecca family was one of the global players, supplying England, France, Denmark and Sweden.
It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that they began to fill their own bottles. From the beginning, only grapes from the company's own vineyards were used and processed in the company's first own winery. In its present form, the Azienda Conti Zecca was born in the 1930s, when Alcibiade Zecca transformed the country estate into a winery to produce only wines. Today, the company, now managed by the brothers Alcibiade, Francesco, Luciano and Mario Zecca, is a permanent fixture in Apulia's viticulture.
In the fifties and sixties of the last century the family began to develop the potential of their vineyards consistently. The four estates Saraceno, Donna Marzia and Santo Stefano around Leverano as well as the Cantalupi winery in Salice Salentino today have a total area of about 320 hectares of vineyards. They are cultivated sustainably, with as little mechanical use as possible and a high proportion of "manual work". Every day in the vineyards of Conti Zecca the employees work hand in hand.
The Salento is flat land, but on rocky, calcareous ground with layers of clay, loam and sand. Since it lies between the seas, often less than 50 kilometres between the coasts, there is a constant wind that keeps the grapes dry and healthy, which is why chemical precautions are hardly necessary. Even if the days often reach very high temperatures, the evenings and nights are quite cool. These differences promote the fruit and bring a playful fine acid structure into the drops.
In the last decades the autochthonous grape varieties such as Primitivo (called Zinfandel in California), Negroamaro, Aglianico, Malvasia Nera and Malvasia Bianca, as well as Fiano, have been increasingly cultivated. The international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are mainly used as blending partners for the cuvées.
In the cellar of the traditional Apulian company, Antonio Romano, the head oenologist and technical manager, is in charge. Shortly before the turn of the millennium, he trimmed the Conti Zecca estate to quality with the "Nero", thus helping to achieve an international breakthrough. With Giorgio Marone, Romano has a highly qualified consultant at his side. Modern vinified, Conti Zecca's fruity wines convince with their impressive high quality at fair prices. SUPERIORE.DE
"I have always been a fan of Conti Zecca's and have followed the estate's progress carefully over the years. I highly recommend these value-minded wines to those seeking authentic flavors from Southern Italy." Monica Larner (Robert Parker)
