The Azienda Agricola Pratello is situated on the south-western shore of Lake Garda, on a hill behind Padenghe Castle, 200 metres above sea level. The tradition-rich history of the 70 hectare farm goes back more than 150 years. The first owner is said to have been the noble Pialorsi family from Brescia. The vineyards, some of which have been completely renovated since 2000, are cultivated according to strict guidelines that are in harmony with nature. The current owner of the Azienda, Vincenzo Bertola, has chosen Dante Bertola (according to his son's statement "the true agronomic soul of Pratello") to rather unusual grape varieties and wines with complex characteristics, often going beyond regional characteristics and offering a nonconformist alternative to typical and traditional vinified wines.
The agronomist Paolo di Francesco had carefully examined every single area of the estate before deciding on the selection of the grapes: A structural analysis of the soil, measurements of solar radiation and an intensive study of the microclimate - these preliminary works, always in compliance with the regulations for organic cultivation, helped to find out which grape varieties would find ideal conditions in which locations. The soils of the Azienda are characterised by the melting of prehistoric glaciers of moraine origin. They are stony, very loose, have some clay content and are therefore particularly suitable for the cultivation of vines that produce very low yields per hectare but are of high quality. The mild climate around Lake Garda acts as a thermal drive and is decisive for the ripening of the Pratello fruits. All red grapes are cultivated in a depression 180 metres above sea level. The white berries are harvested on a gentle hill facing south and 250 meters above sea level.
Nicola Ragnoli's historical wine cellars for ageing, fermentation and bottling are located below ground level. The Lombard winery can rely on the latest technologies for the optimal processing of its grapes, which have also met the criteria for organic certification of the Mediterranean Institute of Certification since 2004. Pratello's wines are made exclusively from berries from its own vineyards located in the Lugana region - where the indigenous Turbiana variety is used - and Valtenesi. SUPERIORE.DE
