“Dolée” Friulano Friuli Isonzo DOC 2021
Friulano Dolée is another impressive flagship of Vie di Romans. Bright straw yellow colour. Clean, fresh aromas of honey, citrus and pear, complemented by ripe banana. On the palate, its soft texture provides an ideal sounding board for the beautifully layered fruit basket of peach, melon, quince and fresh pear. A ripe, finessed wine that finishes long and with excellent acid-fruit balance. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Friulano Dolée is exotically spiced and vibrant in the glass, with an intense burst of lemon meringue complemented by sweet mint and crystallized ginger. Silky and supple on the palate, this boasts ultra-ripe citrus and orchard fruits balanced by stimulating acidity. This finishes with outstanding length and is spicy with lingering tropical melon notes. While the 2021 comes across as sweet, it's just a trick of the acidity and fruit, as this finished at only 1.2 grams of residual sugar." Vinous
"Spiced apples and pears with hints of peach pit, crushed almonds, dried lemon peel and the scent of summer flowers. Creamy and smooth with medium to full body, refreshed by herbs and savoury undertones. Long and racy." James Suckling

“Piere” Sauvignon Bianco Friuli Isonzo DOC 2021
Rive Alte Sauvignon Blanc Piere is the lighter of the winery's two Sauvignons, but both wines are beautiful in their own way. Piere shows earthy notes of green olive, garden tomato leaves and sage on the palate, rounded off by upbeat and tangy flavours of citrus orange peel and some crushed mineral and white pepper. All the elements are in place and like all Vie di Romans whites, Piere needs time in the glass to find its centre and minerality. And if you have the patience to give it to him, he is great. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Sauvignon Blanc Piere 2021 is a spice bomb that captures my attention with hints of ground ginger, cardamom, flint and curry before flowing into dried nectarines. It is luxurious and silky, yet with a cooling minerality and acidity that underlines its floral notes of green citrus and melon. For all its intensity, the 2021 finishes crisp and classically dry, while spicy herbal notes linger. This forward, fruit-driven yet seductive Sauvignon is a true delight." Vinous
"Light straw yellow with greenish reflections. Intense, cool scents of gooseberry, pineapple, basil and flint. On the palate medium structure, soft with present fruit, persistent, juicy final." Falstaff
"Spicy and citrusy with pear slices, lime peel, spicy herbs and raw almonds. Medium to full-bodied, juicy and crisp with exciting phenolic character. Steady and lively acidity. Long and mineral with a creamy finish." James Suckling
"From the vineyard of the same name, a pure Sauvignon Blanc of complexity and finesse, aged on the lees in steel, notes of pineapple on the nose, nuances of lemongrass, hints of white pepper and cedar peel. Spicy-iodic on the palate, with a fruity-citrus finish." Luca Gardini

“Dis Cumieris” Malvasia Friuli Isonzo DOC 2021
Beautiful Malvasia with a lot of varietal expression and an impressive potpourri of aromas. Jasmine, pear and white peach develop in the glass, with hints of passion fruit, spices and lime on the palate. Soft texture, very good structure and a complexity that opens up new facets with every sip. The finish is deep and long and, as always, the long yeast ageing time ensures a promising ageing potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Malvasia Dis Cumieris wafts up with a sweetly scented mix of dusty dried flowers offset by sage, nectarine and confectioners’ sugar. Silky yet pure in style, traversing both savory and sweet, this impresses with its notes of vividly ripe green melon traversing sour lime. The 2021 finishes with medium length and is remarkably pretty, leaving tropical inner florals to linger. This perfumed beauty aims to please." Vinous
"A fairly salty and flavourful Malvasia showing lots of Mediterranean herbs and spices, dried lemons, tiles and some creamy spiced apples. Seaweed and iodine flavours on the palate with medium to full body, zesty acidity and a salty finish." James Suckling

Vibrant golden straw yellow. The floral and spicy nose offers ripe pear, cinnamon, chamomile, white peach and grapefruit with subtle hints of ginger. Rich and racy, with layered fruit tree and tropical fruit flavours and a subtle spice that lingers beautifully on the rich, lush finish. Its excellent saltiness and a very juicy, fresh cut accompany the tropical and spicy fruit flavours on the long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Flors di Uis is as lively and vibrant as a perfect spring day with nuances of freshly squeezed lemons, wildflowers, wet stone and ground ginger. There's a burst of inner sweetness up front, yet this is focused on purity, as mineral and floral perfumes complicate its notes of tropical green melon. Lifted and racy in style, this finishes with a salty flourish and lime zest notes that slowly taper off, revealing an utterly crisp finale." Vinous
"Aromatic with lemon pith, lychees, jasmine, white pepper and flinty minerality. Polished and structured with medium to full body and lively acidity. Lean and long finish." James Suckling
"Powerful bright golden yellow. Very fragrant nose, of bergamot, grapefruit and crisp peach. Beautiful melting on the palate, round and smooth, endowed with lots of present yellow fruit, salty and long on the final." Falstaff

“Maurus” Merlot Friuli Isonzo DOC 2019
Beautiful interpretation of the grape variety: Herbaceous and minty notes on the nose, plus lavender and sage. Then very tasty and complex on the palate of dark fruits, dried cherries, complemented by tones of undergrowth and tobacco. A touch of fine tannins, minerals and traces of rosemary and liquorice lead this medium-bodied red seductively into a sophisticated final. SUPERIORE.DE

Limitation of 3 articles per customer“Vieris” Sauvignon Bianco Friuli Isonzo DOC 2021
Soft, silky wine with aromas of ripe apricots and honey that harmonise well with the fleshy richness of the mouthfeel. The expressive and very varietal palate is crowned by abundant stone fruit, melon and pear. This is a strong showing from one of the winery's flagships. SUPERIORE.DE
"A graceful, medium-bodied white that caresses the palate with a creamy texture. Features flavors of ripe mango and melon, blood orange peel and crushed pine supported by mouthwatering acidity and an underlying streak of salinity, both driving the well-honeyed finish." Wine Spectator
"Rich and dense Sauvignon with notes of waxed lemons, ripe stone fruit, raw almonds and spicy and herbaceous nuances. The palate is full-bodied with depth and creaminess, but also with a lively acidity that gives it a fresh and citrusy appeal. Long finish." James Suckling
"The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Vieris opens slowly in the glass, holding back in its youthful state, with hints of lemon oil, rosemary and wet stone accentuated by sweet spice. This is seamlessly silky, almost oily in feel, with sapid yellow citrus and savory herbal tones enriched by vibrant acidity. It finishes potent and spicy, leaving the palate saturated in an intense staining of primary concentration. The potential here is off the charts." Vinous

"Great wines are made in great terroirs. The fundamental element is always the land." This is what Gianfranco Gallo likes to tell us in conversation. The Friulian winemaker is dedicated to producing exceptional site wines that combine the unique terroir and the particularities of the grape variety in the wine glass. Like hardly any other winery, his Vie di Romans operation stands for continuous top quality and has long been considered one of the flagship companies of the Italian wine scene.
Gianfranco took over the estate from his father in 1978 and carried out a radical restructuring of the vineyards in the years that followed. In order to express the characteristic growing zones as clearly as possible, it was decided to have the subsoil, surface and microclimate of the individual vineyards scientifically studied. The current production philosophy is thus based on the awareness that the vineyards have small but very important differences, which are ultimately reflected in the respective cru wines.
On 60 hectares, the predominantly white varieties of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Malvasia Istriana, Friulano and Riesling Renano mature, as well as other red grape varieties. The extensive vineyard is characterized by clay and ferruginous soils with alluvial limestone and sandstone, which do not produce high yields. Gianfranco's rigorous natural viticulture takes 650 to 750 hours of work per hectare each year.
The extreme attention to terroir results in each Vie di Romans wine being labeled with the name of the grape variety and the name of the vineyard of origin. The single-varietal wines and refined cuvées are deliberately released two years after the harvest, at the ideal time for ripening, highlighting the best characteristics of the diverse Isonzo DOC growing area, located right on the Slovenian border.
The name of the winery translates as "Road of the Romans" and refers to a road that in Roman times connected the two most important cities of Friuli, Aquileia and Cividale del Friuli. It winds through the village of Mariano del Friuli, past Gianfranco's winery and its carefully tended vineyards. The 40 harvests that the winemaker has now had are characterized by a wide range of wines that are full of character, long-lived and, above all, expressive.
Gianfranco Gallo and his team have more than earned their cult status and remain an unmistakable guarantee of quality to this day. SUPERIORE.DE
