    • "del Pompiere" Pinot Grigio Friuli DOC 2019

“del Pompiere” Pinot Grigio Friuli DOC 2019

Mario Schiopetto was born in 1930, he grew up in the Osteria ai Pompieri owned by the family and had his first professional experiences as a fireman and later as a truck driver. In 1963, guided only by his taste and love of wine, he began to devote himself to wine production in his parents' farm and produced the first pure Tocai in 1965. At the time, the historic label included a drawing of his fire truck, which he also used to deliver wine to customers. With the current 2019 vintage, the winery is reflecting on these historical roots and is reviving the cute drawing on part of its wine labels.

Pinot Gris from Friuli with green apple and orange blossom, a hint of wet stones and coriander on the nose. Medium-bodied on the palate and wonderfully fresh on the final. Appealingly sophisticated. SUPERIORE.DE

"Loads of white pepper to the green papaya and hints of lime and green apple. It’s medium-to full-bodied with layers of fruit and a creamy-textured finish. Attractive lemon-curd and chalk nuances to the fruit." James Suckling

Light straw yellow with greenish shimmer. Fine, not too strong bouquet of exotic fruits, some gooseberry and notes of white flowers. Very good balance on the palate, good volume, drinkable and with nice tension between green fruity and fine spicy notes. A very harmonious Sauvignon, which does not score with opulence and directness, but with elegance and finesse. SUPERIORE.DE

Schiopetto's classic, as it has been produced since 1986. Pale yellow with greenish reflexes. In the nose yellow fruity with a subtle floral and herbal note, which is also found on the palate. Multilayered, mineral and fresh, Blanc des Rosis presents the famous grape variety identity of the region and is not only for the winery the classic par excellence. Elegant and full, it glides into an impressive final, increasing in depth and creaminess as it matures in the bottle. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2019 Blanc des Rosis, a blend of Friulano, Sauvignon, Pinot Bianco and Pinot Grigio, takes some time to open up in the glass. With coaxing, it blossoms, blowing off an air of crushed stone and earthy minerals to show musky peach and honied florals. In the mouth, ripe orchard fruits soothe, while savory spice and vibrant acids add verve. At one moment it focuses on ripeness, and at others on sour notes and tension. The Blanc des Roses tapers off, leaving an expression of contrasts." Vinous

Aromatic white with a fresh bouquet, reminiscent of elderflower. Pure and balanced taste, delicate vinous and independent. SUPERIORE.DE

"A fresh and clean wine with medium body, grape skin and lemon. Bright acidity. Sautéed almond." James Suckling

"Bright straw. Intensely perfumed, aromatic nuances of grapefruit, white pepper and pear on the captivating nose. Fresh and juicy but tactile, with a varietally accurate saline twist to the chewy ripe yellow fruit. Finishes long and saline and with lovely balance: the label reads 15% but you cannot tell. From a 46 years old vineyard in Capriva in the direction of Russiz. Readers might like to know that this is the original vineyard in which Marco Simonit, probably the world’s most famous expert on pruning (who works not just in Italy but for the likes of Château Latour and Château d’Yquem as well) started his experimentations." You'll find sweet layers of pear and green apple, along with more exotic notes of saffron and crocus flower in the bouquet. It would liven up any pie with creamy chicken and vegetables." Sauvignon Bianco Collio DOC 2017

Elegant aromas of gooseberry and lemon followed by a full body with strong fruit and mineral nuances, very stylish and unmistakably high class. SUPERIORE.DE

"Shiny bright straw yellow. Opened with slightly smoky notes, some elderflower, but not very intense overall. It blooms well on the palate, salty and dense, with a striking fruit with notes of mirabelle plums, gooseberries and green mango, echoing for a long time." Falstaff

"With a pungent aromatic style, the 2017 Collio Sauvignon is a very expressive white. It shows interesting grassy and green tones along with some grapefruit and a curious note of tomato leaf. I love it. The mouthfeel is thin compared to its beautiful bouquet, but that can be countered with an accompanying plate of fried calamari rings or breaded sardines with herbs." Robert Parker

      Sauvignon Bianco Collio DOC 2018

Shiny light straw yellow. Elegant aromas of gooseberry, smoke and lemon followed by a full body with strong fruit and mineral nuances, very balanced and unmistakably high class. SUPERIORE.DE

"A round, fruity white with herbal, lemon-grass and some green-apple character. Medium to full body." James Suckling

"Brilliant straw-green hue. Aromas and flavors of sage, nectarine and gooseberries. Very refined and not extremely pungent, characterized by high acidity and juiciness. Finishes with vibrant grapefruit nectar notes emerging on the long back-end. An outstanding, classy Sauvignon that doesn't need to rely on unripe green fruit notes for appeal as many of the world’s wines made with this variety do." Vinous

    • Pinot Bianco Collio DOC 2018

      Pinot Bianco Collio DOC 2018

Well-balanced Pinot Bianco with a fine scent of jasmine, dried apple and a nice spice. In the drink expressive fruit, lively, very polished with remarkable length and mineral freshness. SUPERIORE.DE

"Spanish broom and white stone fruit aromas form the inviting nose along with a whiff of dried botanical herb. Savory and polished, the mouthwatering, elegant palate features creamy pear, white peach and lemon drop candy alongside tangy acidity. It closes on a white almond note. One of the best recent vintages I've had from the estate." Wine Enthusiast

"Green-tinged yellow. Citrus fruits, white flowers and minty herbs on the nose. White peach, mint and a distinctly stony, slatey quality to the glyceral beeswax and white orchard fruit flavors. Suave dense and easygoing, with fruit and floral-driven flavors dominating on the lingering finish. A great Pinot Bianco." Vinous

"There’s a really wonderful, vertical sense and tension running through this medium-bodied pinot bianco, offering flowers, white pepper, melon and citrus fruit, including grapefruit." James Suckling

      Friulano Collio DOC 2019

Mineral and lush Friulano with wonderful aromas of grapefruit, white pepper, figs and bananas. In the taste then further appetizing flavours of tropical fruits, apricots and hazelnuts. Very long and like every year great! SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2019 Friulano wafts up flowery perfumes mixed with notes of tropical citrus, hints of kiwi and musky apricot. It’s soothing with soft textures, offset by hints of spice and dazzling acids which enliven the expression, giving way to mineral-laced orchard fruits. Hints of young mango offset by zests of lime and exotic inner florals linger and complete the experience perfectly. This is a pleasure to taste." Vinous

    • Malvasia Bianco Collio DOC 2018

      Malvasia Bianco Collio DOC 2018

Light stalk yellow with greenish reflexes. Aromatic, fresh white with a radiant bouquet, memories of peach and elderflower. Pure and balanced taste, delicately vinous, a little salty and highly individual. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2018 Collio Malvasia offers a slightly soapy and floral interpretation of the grape with honeysuckle and white rose potpourri. Malvasia's aromas trend toward the floral, but this wine takes it one step further with enough viscous richness and textural heft to enjoy with a classic radicchio soup." Robert Parker

"Luminous straw-green. Chamomile tea, white peach, nectarine and guava on the complex nose. Then slightly mineral in the mouth, with similar flavors to the aromas, with a long, clean, vibrant finish. Made with grapes from a two hectare single vineyard planted right around the house in 1969. Schiopetto stopped making a Malvasia in 2001, but current owner Rotolo brought the wine back to life in 2014. A very good decision, to say the least." Vinous

"Apricots and dried lemons, together with flint and slate. Aromatic. Medium body, fruity center palate and a long, flavorful finish that yields candied lemons." James Suckling

    • Pinot Grigio Collio DOC 2018

      Pinot Grigio Collio DOC 2018

Bright light yellow. White peach in the delicate bouquet of the elegant Pinot Grigio. At the palate fruity, fresh and complex. Fine minerality and good length. SUPERIORE.DE

"Vivid straw yellow. Intense aromas of strawberry, violet, orchard fruit and a hint of peanut for added complexity. A very well balanced, deep Pinot Grigio with precise flavors that are very similar to the aromas and a long creamy finish." Vinous

"The Schiopetto 2018 Collio Pinot Grigio opens to a medium rich and fragrant bouquet with citrus, preserved lemon, saffron and dried rose. Compared to many of its commercial peers, this wine shows elaborate aromatic layering. And instead of the standard citrus and dried grass, this expression offers honey-like tones and general smoothness." Robert Parker

"Aromas evoking hawthorn and cantaloupe mingle with scents of Alpine herb on this savory, structured Pinot Grigio. On the rounded palate, fresh acidity lifts mature pear, Rennet apple and a hint of nectarine. It closes on a saline note." Wine Enthusiast

"Shows wonderful clarity and intensity with dried lemons, apples, peaches, peach pit and stone character. Medium to full body. Crisp and bright in a rich year." James Suckling

Light stalk yellow with greenish reflexes. Aromatic, fresh white with a radiant bouquet, memories of peach and elderflower. Pure and balanced taste, delicately vinous, a little salty and highly individual. SUPERIORE.DE

"Fresh herbs, such as Thai basil and fresh thyme, color the citrus fruit on the nose and palate. It’s full-bodied, tangy and juicy with a salty and mineral finish. Very dry." James Suckling

"The 2019 Malvasia blends richness with freshness and a bit of tropical fruit to create an inviting bouquet. It’s sweetly floral and a bit exotic, showing ripe peaches and apricot, along with a contrasting wave of yellow citrus. The textures are silky, almost weighty at times, while finding balance through brisk acids, as notes of sour melon, savory herbs, mint, and candied ginger linger on the dramatically long finish. Fragrant bouquet of citrus and white peach, on the palate a wonderfully layered fruit, creamy texture with fresh acid wire. In the finish a fine minerality and good length. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2019 Pinot Grigio pleases with a sweet mix of white flowers and crushed apple offset by hints of zesty lime. It’s luxuriously soft and round yet well-balanced by stimulating acids and minerals, while leaning more toward the tropical fruit spectrum. Clean, poised yet long, this tapers off with a hint of banana and yellow citrus. It’s a wonderfully characterful and textural Pinot Grigio." Vinous

Brilliant light straw yellow. Elegant aromas of gooseberry, smoke and lemon followed by a full body with powerful fruit and mineral nuances, very balanced and unmistakably high class. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2019 Sauvignon received an official “Wow” when I first put my nose to the glass. Pungent, sharp and focused florals rise up, met by tropical pineapple, papaya and minty peach, and then smoothed out by sweet cream and hints of smoke. It’s deeply textural with pronounced inner sweetness yet also packed with zesty citrus and minerals. The result is an incredibly stimulating yet also balanced display. Ripe apple and hints of kiwi join the fray, as this never seems to lose energy, tapering off with tension and a mouthwatering twang of spice." Vinous

Dark ruby, fine spicy underlaid ripe fruit scent, delicate blackberry, cassis and dried herbs. Elegant and of very good complexity, silky tannins and sweet fruit, well structured and cherry finish. Already today an accessible and very elegant food companion. SUPERIORE.DE

"Deep ruby. Chocolate and coffee dominate the dark plum and dark berry flavors. Youthful, chewy but refined in the mouth, with a strong spicy and sexy oak component that does not overpower the underlying blue fruit and herbal flavors." Vinous

"A release of about 3,300 bottles, the Schiopetto 2017 Podere dei Blumeri is an equal-parts blend of Merlot and Refosco that shows terrific balance and a bright, fruit-forward presentation. The wine displays candied fruit aromas with cherry, blackcurrant, plum, spice and bitter chocolate. In terms of appearance, it displays a bright ruby color with bluish hues. There is plenty of fresh, sweet berry fruit on the close that gives this wine great appeal straight out of the gate." Robert Parker

    About the winemakersSchiopettoFriuli
    Schiopetto

The Schiopetto winery is one of the oldest wineries in the Collio region, which includes terraced vineyards between the towns of Gorizia and Cividale with a vineyard area of around 1,600 hectares. Because it quickly became an important pillar of the local wine industry and has remained so to this day, the founder and namesake Mario Schiopetto, who died at the age of 72, is also referred to as a pioneer of Friulian viticulture. The farm, situated on the rolling hills of Capriva del Friuli in the province of Gorizia, is now owned by Dottore Emilio Rotolo, who also owns the Volpe Pasini winery. The new owner has entrusted the management to his two sons Francesco and Alessandro, who are assisted as oenological advisors by the experienced Lorenzo Landi. In the cellar, Mario Schiopetto's son Giorgio, oenologist and agronomist, and Mauro Simeoni continue the work of the famous founder of the estate, always driven by great curiosity, with convincing passion.

Mario Schiopetto is considered the initiator of the quality revolution in Friuli's white wine sector. 30 hectares of vineyards are located in the fertile land surrounding the winery's headquarters - the ancient archbishop's palace in Capriva del Friuli - and further east on the site of the later acquired Podere dei Blumeri on the hills of Rosazzo in the Colli Orientali wine-growing area.

Here are some historical cornerstones without which the outstanding position of the winery today can hardly be explained: At the beginning of the 1960s, Mario Schiopetto decided to vinify his wines with thermocontrolled fermentation. From 1971, the winegrower was one of the first winegrowers in the region to refrain from adding sulphur to the must. At the beginning of the nineties, a new cellar with state-of-the-art technology was inaugurated, partly buried in a vineyard. It was also Mario Schiopetto who introduced a garden design concept for the plots in Friuli, after having his property checked by practice-oriented vine experts. The winery made a particularly happy decision in 2007 when it mixed Chardonnay from the Colli Orientali del Friuli with the Friulano grapes from the Collio and created Mario Schiopetto Bianco from this merger.

The wines of the Schiopetto winery are marketed at the earliest one and a half years after the harvest. The top white wines are flawless in their fragrance, regularly have a uniformly high level and are also capable of ageing. SUPERIORE.DE
