    When the successful entrepreneur and hotelier Vicenzo Muccioli in 1978 made his estate near Coriano in the open and well ventilated hilly hinterland of Rimini available to a few young people in need of help to offer them protection and security as well as a new home, it was far from clear that the most important European project for the reintegration of drug addicts would emerge from it. The first worldwide successes were celebrated by the community with horse breeding, but after Vicenzo's death in 1995, the vineyards near the Adriatic Sea received more attention with the entry of his son Andrea. Since the first grape harvest, top oenologist Riccardo Cotarella has been responsible for the successful development of the winery.

    Already the first wine under Cotarella's direction from the year 1999 received with "Tre Bicchieri" (Three glasses) the highest award of the wine guide Gambero Rosso. Thus the noble wine received at the same time the highest honors, which had received a wine from this region up to then at all. Four years later, the Sommelier Union of Italy (AIS) named San Patrignano the best winery in the country. It was followed by a true "shower of glass". The initially bold plan to join the ranks of the very best wine producers in Italy was finally achieved.

    The San Patrignano grapes, which grow on calcareous clay soils, have an expressive fruit and are characterised by soft tannins, which is also true of the Sangiovese, which is otherwise considered to be rough and austere. Despite his early fame, Cotarella does not rest on its laurels, but continues to refine the high quality of its Kreszenzen.

    The ambitious San Patrignano oenology concept is one of Romagna's most important economic projects, not least because of a successful strategy developed with the help of Cotarella, the replanting of more than 100 hectares of vineyards and the new winery inaugurated in 2005. The vines, systematised according to individual characteristics and quality criteria, are at their best. The grape varieties and the assortment have been very well adapted to the terroir and tradition of the old wine-growing region. In addition to Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot also thrive in the estate. The whites are dominated by Trebbiano, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc in cooler locations. In the first decade of this century the vineyards of San Patrignano were converted to organic wine - some hectares are even cultivated biodynamically. SUPERIORE.DE
