“Via del Campo” Falanghina Irpinia DOC 2022
Pale straw yellow with golden reflections. Ripe herbal aromas, tonic, sweet lemon, grapefruit and apricot on the nose. Juicy and penetrating on the palate, with a delightful floral lift and energy that leads seamlessly into the long, complex finish with a savoury bite and pronounced minerality. A beautiful, distinctive single-vineyard Falanghina in a class of its own. SUPERIORE.DE
"Green melon, candied lime, freshly sliced Granny Smith apple and crushed stones form a captivating bouquet as the 2022 Falanghina Via del Campo comes to life in the glass. It is soft and supple, with a mineral note at the forefront, enhanced by vibrant acidity, while tart fruit and citrus keep the tension high. The 2022 finishes crisp and refreshing, yet remarkably long with a concentration of sour melon lingering around the cheeks. There is great potential here. The Via del Campo shows the best characteristics of this ripe vintage and a minerality that perfectly balances the expression." Vinous
"Clean floral aromas with notes of yellow peach and apple and a hint of almond. Medium-bodied with a salty freshness on the palate and a long finish with more lemon peel and zest dressing the firm, dry-mineral texture. A Falanghina of the highest calibre." James Suckling
"From the vineyard of the same name in Piana dei Greci, in Mirabella Eclano, partially vinified and fully matured in French oak barriques, this is a sophisticated, multi-layered and complex wine. White melon, a hint of lemon peel and sage on the nose, crisp and savoury mouthfeel, with a fruity finish." Luca Gardini
"A wine like this gives us new appreciation of a workhorse grape like Falanghina. When made in the right hands, this native varietal with roots in antiquity can produce delightful results with surprising nuance and elegance. That's what you get with the Quintodecimo 2022 Irpinia Falanghina Via del Campo. The wine reveals good texture and a slightly waxy feel with hints of the dried tropical fruits and grapefruit-like aromas you get from the grape skins. One-third of the wine goes into oak, and that also adds to the spiciness and textural support of this wine. It shows much more fruit weight and depth when considered on a scale of Falanghina wines." “Terra d’Eclano” Aglianico Irpinia DOC 2020
The dark and seductive bouquet opens with blackberry jam, blueberries and peppery floral tones, which are found on the palate together with salty notes and a fine tannin. Its enormously silky texture and well-dosed concentration of black fruits are accompanied by a remarkable freshness that builds and builds until the endlessly long final. This lively and at the same time incredibly elegant red wine delights on the finish with minty herbs and flowers that could not be more seductive. With increasing years of ageing in the bottle, you can look forward to a few more positive surprises! SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Aglianico Terra d'Eclano is a model of class, with a gorgeous bouquet of violets, lavender, dried blueberries and incense. Its silky texture soothes as the polished red and black fruits flow over a core of vibrant acidity. Rosy, floral notes are surrounded by soft tannins. Black tea, tart wild berries and citrus notes slowly fade away. The 2020 is a remarkably beautiful and complex interpretation of Terra d'Eclano." Vinous
"Aromas of blackberries and blueberries against a background of floral and vegetal notes that add complexity and interest to the wine. Medium-bodied with an almost tart plum flavour. The palate is taut and the tannins are fine but powerful, drying out the finish for the moment. Give it some time and try it from 2024." James Suckling
"Made with a special selection of fruit from across five vineyard sites with different soil profiles, the Quintodecimo 2020 Irpinia Aglianico Terra d'Eclano is the most approachable of these reds with ripe primary fruit and softness. Fruit in 2020 shows abundant ripeness, texture and richness with baked blackberry, cherry liqueur, caramel, toasted spice and campfire ember. This wine is underlined by power and ripeness." “Grande Cuvée Luigi Moio” Bianco Irpinia DOC 2021
One may wonder whether Luigi Moio is a professor wearing a winemaker's hat or a winemaker wearing a professor's hat. His vintage presentations are academic in tone, his tasting room is run with the rigour of a lecture theatre, and his vineyards are planted according to criteria that only a mathematician or scholar could fully understand. Quintodecimo's winemaking philosophy, on the other hand, is relatively simple. The best vineyard sites are selected for each individual wine. Soils, sites and microclimates are researched with great care. Nothing is taken for granted.
The Grande Cuvée Luigi Moio is the house's new top white cuvée and a carefully thought-out blend of Fiano, Greco and Falanghina, with the blending ratio varying depending on the vintage. It only comes onto the market after 14 months of bottle ageing. The idea was to create a "super-bianco" that represents the best of southern Italy, and the result is magnificent. About 60% of the wine is fermented in oak barrels and the blend is regularly stirred on the lees. The wine has a velvety, rich texture with silky fruit weight and lingering flavours of summer peach, quince, acacia honey and fragrant tuberose. All this beauty is framed by etched notes of saltiness or crushed shells. This is an outstanding achievement and raises the bar for Italian white wines! SUPERIORE.DE
"Complex flavours of rockmelon and peach together with floral and slightly honeyed notes, leading to a medium-bodied palate with very good concentration and focus. A slight phenolic element adds structure and makes for a long finish that ranges from fruit to tangy honey and salty minerals. There's a lot going on here." James Suckling
"This classy version delivers mouthwatering acidity, with zesty hints of pink grapefruit peel and grated ginger, plus tangy salinity. Offers focused flavors of nectarine, white cherry and Marcona almond, showing great energy and expression. This white’s vibrancy is held in fine restraint, with a deft and delicate mesh that expands on the creamy palate and lingers through the elegant finish." Wine Spectator
"Baked apples and pears combine with sweet mint, camomile and a hint of vanilla as the Taurasi Grande Cuvée 2021 unfolds in the glass. Silky and elegant, it washes over the palate in perfect harmony, while salty minerals combine with candied lime and zesty acidity. The sour melon and tart green apple are full of tension and depth. The 2021 finishes with remarkable length. It is simply stunning and full of potential. The Grande Cuvée is a blend of 40% Greco, 20% Falanghina and 40% Fiano, which matures for eight months on the lees in a combination of 60% new barriques and 40% stainless steel." Vinous
"I have described this wine in the past as a blend of the "three graces", and this analogy comes to mind again. The Quintodecimo 2021 Irpinia Grande Cuvée Luigi Moio offers the playful nature of the first grape variety, the texture of the second and the vertical lift of the third. This is the total package from Campania, and it's a wonder that more winemakers aren't experimenting with Campania white wine blends. This limited production shows tropical tones, pie crust, custard, honey and fragrant white flowers. At first glance, the wine is dense and compact, but it needs more time in the bottle to develop and open up. This is a beauty." Wine Advocate

On the full bouquet we find ripe dark fruits complemented by spiced oranges, sage and mint with a hint of green olive. On the palate, velvety textures are contrasted by cooling acids, while polished black fruits wash over the senses, leaving a mix of salty minerals and fine tannins with a hint of violet flowers. The finish is long, packed with masses of ripe blackberries, plums and sweet herbal tones, but also perfectly structured and, for all its youthfulness, very balanced and harmonious. Luigi Moio and his team have interpreted this vintage brilliantly and have once again set new standards with this year's edition of the single-vineyard Aglianico. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich, sparkling ruby colour with a slight violet tinge. Intense and at the same time finely characterised nose, aromas of ripe blackberries, cranberries and blood orange, slightly resinous components in the background. On the palate as if from a single mould, present, crisp berry fruit, opens up with present, pithy tannins in many layers, with an emphatically spicy finish." Falstaff
"The Quintodecimo 2018 Taurasi Riserva Vigna Grande Cerzito (with fruit from volcanic soils, ash and pumice) is richly concentrated but also impeccably balanced with a very dense textural base to support an intense bouquet that is interwoven with black fruit, spice, tar and oak toast. The tannins are slightly drier in this wine and the mouthfeel is just a tad more streamlined, giving this wine the tools it needs to become more elegant and fine with extra time in the bottle. It's a classic Taurasi with long aging potential." Wine Advocate
"Aromas and flavours of Amarena cherries and plums with some vanilla from the oak. With a medium to full body, this Taurasi Riserva is almost light on its feet, although it lacks neither tannic structure nor fruit weight. A fine example of a Taurasi that is beautifully balanced from start to finish, without being overly fat in any area. It is already accessible now, but will clearly gain in complexity with some ageing." James Suckling
"Incense and cloves combine with musky blackcurrants and violette pastille to create a darkly seductive bouquet as the Taurasi Vigna Grande Cerzito 2018 slowly blossoms in the glass. It is pure seduction on the palate. It is silky smooth and refined with polished dark red fruits and sweet herbal notes accompanied by a lively acidity. It leaves the palate with hints of liquorice, tarry blackberries and fine-grained tannins, but the mouth demands more. This is pure class. This is a truly harmonious Grande Cerzito that no lover of Quintodecimo should be without." Vinous

Luigi Moio is one of the most famous professors of viticulture and oenology in Italy and the Cru Vigna Quintodecimo is his showpiece in the stable. This wine has a unique and seductive class, richness and elegance that outshines the entire volcanic appellation. The initially restrained bouquet only gradually opens up in layers, releasing new impressions every minute. Violets, ripe blackberries, blueberry skins, plums and white smoke unfold like a magic bag and are found in the energetic mouthfeel together with finely knit tannin and a fresh fruit-acid interplay. The texture is impressively silky and underlines the tremendous elegance and harmony of this exceptional Aglianico, which will reach its most exciting phase in 10-15 years at the earliest. SUPERIORE.DE
"Really dense, crushed, ripe red berries and red plums on the nose, together with a pestle and mortar melange of fresh herbs. The fruit concentration is quite something. But then the full-bodied palate disperses the heavily concentrated fruit into a superb balance of fluid fruit and tannin that offers great drinkability even now. This will only improve with some bottle age. Try from 2023." James Suckling
"The 2016 Taurasi Vigna Quintodecimo is incredibly primary and intense. A massive wave of black currants, plums, exotic spice, roses, leather, wet stone and underbrush blasts up from the glass. It enters the palate with fleshy ripe dark fruits offset by hints of tangerine under pretty violet florals; yet throughout the entire experience, grippy tannins slowly saturate. Bright acids create a surprisingly juicy impression through the finale, even as the 2016 flexes its structural muscle, tapering off persistent and impeccably balanced with hints of licorice that linger long. It’s amazing how approachable the 2016 comes across today, yet it also possesses all of the necessary components to excel over the next two decades in a cold cellar." Vinous
"The 2016 Taurasi Riserva Vigna Quintodecimo reveals a rich and silky texture. Any rough edges have been adequately softened and ironed out with barrique age. The management of the tannins is superb with this vintage of Aglianico. The wine's steady presence offers a taut sounding board for dark fruit aromas, oak spice, campfire ash and sweet, earthy afternoons. The aromas are presented with spicy and vertical intensity. This lovely wine would cozy up nicely to a classic steak with green pepper sauce." Wine Advocate

"The Taurasi Vigna Quintodecimo 2018 is a deep purple colour in the glass. It smells of a sweet, tantalising blend of medicinal black cherries, cloves and dusty roses. The palate is more serene and refined than expected, and savoury too, with a savoury mix of blackberry and cocoa giving way to grippy tannins. The 2018 finishes structured and long, leaving a hint of primary concentration. It is surprisingly fresh and finishes with nuances of sage and lavender. Patience is needed for the 2018 to integrate its strong oak influence, but it will be worth the wait. The balance on the inside is exceptional." Vinous
"One of the region's headline wines, the Quintodecimo 2018 Taurasi Riserva Vigna Quintodecimo (with fruit from limestone soils) is gorgeous and makes a beautiful first impression. This was a cool and challenging growing season with rain at inopportune times followed by a hot summer; however, the talented team at this estate has navigated these obstacles brilliantly. Ripe blackberry and baked plum are framed by exotic spice, Spanish cedar and campfire ash. The tannins will soften with more bottle time, and this vintage remains quite tight and dense at this young stage. Give it time." Wine Advocate

"How can Italian Cabernet and Merlot blends compete with the top wines from Bordeaux? And our Pinot Nero with the great Burgundies?" asks winemaker and enology professor Luigi Moio in conversation. For all his admiration for French viticulture, he ultimately opted for indigenous grape varieties to realize his own vision in Campania. Grinning, he adds, "I make Aglianico. I don't copy French wines."
Luigi's Quintodecimo winery is located 80 kilometers northeast of Naples in the village of Mirabella Eclano, in the heart of the Taurasi DOCG designation of origin. Here, in the agricultural hinterland of Campania, one does not find the sweltering heat so typical of the region. Instead, the Irpinia area is blessed with endless meadows and green forests covered with chestnut, beech and oak trees.
The climate, due to the Apennine ridge, is characterized by abundant rainfall and mild summer months, allowing the grapes to ripen in ideal conditions on clay rock and dark volcanic soils. The striving winemaker, who earned his doctorate in Burgundy, produces his silky, organic Aglianico red wines here, which are very different from the typical regional selection.
Quintodecimo is part of the new generation of winemakers who have been instrumental in ensuring that Aglianico is no longer known only for its tannic, rustic power in today's wine world, but is finally revered for its elegant, aromatic side. Together with other quality producers, they have helped this ancient grape variety achieve an impressive image transformation over the last twenty years, and today it is truly something to behold.
Since 2001, the winery has been guided by a simple production philosophy that focuses on the preservation of the territory and its autochthonous grape varieties. With the support of his wife Laura, Luigi studied the different growing zones in Irpinia and planted the white variety Falanghina in some lower vineyard sites, while reserving the higher part of the slopes for Aglianico.
In the vineyard and cellar are really carried out only those works necessary for the creation of unique organically produced wines with high territorial expression. In addition to the impressive single vineyards of his Aglianicos and the fresh Falanghina wines, for years Luigi has managed in an impressive way to produce also the best of the white native varieties Greco and Fiano: deep wines with freshness, high complexity and great aging potential.
