Barolo Boscareto DOCG 2016
Boscareto from Serralunga d'Alba smells intensely of leather and liquorice, dried flowers and undergrowth, straightforwardly the round, fragrant taste follows its way into the persistent final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Beni di Batasiolo makes two top-end single-vineyard Baroli, and the 2016 Barolo Boscareto is one of those. This wine sees fruit from Serralunga d'Alba and therefore represents the bolder and more powerful of the two. But in all honesty, the differences are minimal, especially in a vintage such as 2016 that so successfully brings out the purity of the fruit across all vineyard sites." Wine Advocate
"Savoury nose with baked earth and blackberry fruit. Palate is extracted, with a core of sweetness and a rasp of tannin. Long finish." Decanter
"Aromas of flowers, cedar, strawberries and chocolate follow through to a full body, with a solid core of fruit and tannins and a chewy finish. Needs time to soften." James Suckling

Barolo Cerequio DOCG 2016
The grapes for the garnet-red Cerequio grow in La Morra. The bouquet is unmistakably balsamic with fresh flowers, blackberries, dried mushrooms, spicy notes and a hint of incense and tree bark. On the palate, the delicate fruit harmonises with a refined aroma of tobacco and coffee. Firm tannins, good acidity, yet focussed, elegant and balanced. SUPERIORE.DE
"Perfumed and very pretty with aromas of ripe strawberries, dried flowers and sandalwood leading to a full-bodied, dense and compact palate. Give it a year or two to open up, but already impressive." James Suckling
"Somewhat dried-vegetable, above all a little tomato-like aroma of rose hips and other red and a little black berries with iodine and earthy nuances. Ripe, juicy, fairly supple fruit with moderate, chocolaty oak notes, lots of ripe, very crumbly tannins and a hint of liquorice, dense and persistent on the palate, somewhat spicy, a hint of dried herbs, chalky nuances in the background, very light ethereal and iodine notes, good depth, multi-layered, still relatively compact, very good, juicy, slightly tobacco and delicately cocoa-spicy finish with a certain freshness." Wein-Plus
"Pure and fragrant nose with floral notes and sweet red berries. The palate is rich and finely textured; the tannins are full and fine under layers of complexity. This is a marvellous drop. Captivating." Decanter

Barolo Brunate DOCG 2016
Barolo Brunate, a noble cru from La Morra, shows the characteristic power and definition of its terroir. The dark fruit is enveloped in chocolate and exotic spices. On the palate, firm tannins and fine oak nuances together with the taut acid wire give length and longevity. SUPERIORE.DE
"Aroma of raspberries and crystallised fruit. Ripe and rich on the palate with fine and full tannins; great ageing potential." Decanter
"The Beni di Batasiolo 2016 Barolo Brunate offers hints of ripe fruit with an open or immediately inviting approach. There is dark currant and cassis, followed by spice, earthy tones and a whisper of black truffle. In addition to this full-bodied bouquet, this wine offers solid fruit richness and concentration. The finish is long and carried by silky tannins." Wine Advocate
"Nutty, dried-vegetable to tobacco and tarry aroma of red and a little black berries with mushroomy nuances and some pepper. Ripe, firm, tart, juicy, clear fruit, slightly ethereal notes, taut, ripe tannins, dense and persistent on the palate, fine herbaceous to tobacco flavours, a little peppery in the background, chalky minerality, persistent, firm, good depth, still young, has a certain freshness, a hint of cocoa in the background, multi-layered, very good to long, firm, juicy and finely spicy finish, salty minerality, again with ethereal nuances." Wein-Plus
"Complex and decadent with ripe strawberries, smoke and lavender. Some undertones of burnt orange. Full-bodied, firm and chewy with lots of tannins. Needs time to soften and open up, has potential." James Suckling

Barolo Bussia “Vigneto Bofani” DOCG 2016
Batasiolo's Bussia comes from the Bofani vineyard in Monforte d'Alba. A classic-style Barolo with the exceptionally high quality of the 2016 vintage, promising a long evolution. Multi-layered aromas, crisp fruit, robust acidity and firm tannins create a structured, harmonious impression. SUPERIORE.DE
"Extremely perfumed with strawberries, flowers and some dried earth, too. It’s full-bodied with chewy tannins and lots of walnut and berry character." James Suckling
"Toasty raspberry nose. Very rich and concentrated, with admirable depth of fruit and grip. Evidently youthful, but has power and intensity. The firm tannins give ample structure and this will go the distance. Long, chocolatey finish." Decanter

Barolo “Pisapola” DOCG 2016
Pisapola from the vineyard of the same name in the municipality of Verduno offers a beautiful richness of texture and an impressive softness. This wine is open and honest, with an approachable style that highlights red cherries, undergrowth, wild berries and roses in a very harmonious way. The tannin is precisely measured, and on the finish, its harmony and balance are again inspiring. Not a powerhouse, it brings out the character and elegance of this great Nebbiolo site all the more amiably and authentically. SUPERIORE.DE
"Tasted blind. Medium ruby red with orange reflections. Compact and still reserved nose with a hint of Moroccan leather. Supple and generous palate that doesn't quite open up yet. Polished, chewy tannins that taste of liquorice. Long, but needs more time in the bottle to reveal its hidden depths." Jancis Robinson
"The 2016 Barolo Pisapola is the most airy and perfumed wine in this range. Crushed flowers, mint, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and red berry fruit grace this finely meshed, medium-bodied Barolo. The 2016 is understated, stylish and very pretty." Vinous
"Enticing aromas of macerated cherry, licorice, leather and spice greet the senses, with sweet fruit, licorice, tobacco and spice flavors. Balanced and open, this is will be approachable soon, yet also has the structure to age." Wine Spectator
"The Ascheri 2016 Barolo Pisapola is the most immediate and approachable wine from Matteo Ascheri's series of single-vineyard wines, which makes perfect sense given the geologically younger Tortonian marl and Messinian limestone of the site. The Pisapola site is in Verduno and the wine shows a loose, thin texture characteristic of this subzone. The bouquet is subtle and elegant, although the overall intensity of the wine is lower compared to some of the better-known comuni or villages in the Barolo appellation. It offers a mild structure and a silky finish." Wine Advocate
"Aromas of roses, wild berries, scrub and new leather characterise the elegant nose. The savoury palate mirrors the nose, with ripe Marasca cherry, liquorice, menthol and a mineral note reminiscent of rusty nails. Taut, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity give support, while a hint of game signals the finish." Wine Enthusiast

Barolo “Briccolina” DOCG 2016
This top Barolo comes from the enchanting Corda della Briccolina parcel in Serralunga d'Alba and is the only one of the estate's impressive Barolo range to be matured in barriques. Garnet red in colour with a beguiling aroma of rose petals, rock candy, caramel and dried fruit. Powerful, solemn on the palate, with present tannins and a long, harmonious finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Nose of black cherries and ripe raspberries. Great intensity on the palate, followed by firm tannins and a long, fresh finish." Decanter
"The Beni di Batasiolo 2016 Barolo Briccolina sources its fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, and you can count on more fruit weight and power as a result. This wine shows a dark garnet red colour with sweet cherry and blackberry nuances. These dark fruit tones are underlined by spices, earthy loam and grilled herbs." Wine Advocate
"Rich and smoky with lots of fruit and toasted oak, but not overdone. Full body, crisp tannins and a juicy finish." James Suckling
"Somewhat dried-vegetable and very slightly iodised aroma of red and black berries with distinct tar. Clear, firm, juicy, polished fruit, fine, youthful, yet present tannin, dried floral nuances, cocoa and a little tobacco, again also tar, persistent, good depth, also coffee in the background, multi-layered, has a certain elegance, very good, firm, again quite juicy finish with bacony and fine spicy nuances." Barolo Bussia DOCG 2016
Full bouquet of dark fruits, spices, tar, smoke and wild mushrooms. Powerful on the palate with lots of berry fruit, nice inner sweetness and considerable acid wire, classic grippy tannins and a rich, long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Pecchenino 2016 Barolo Bussia is a dark, sultry and heady expression of Nebbiolo from young vines (about 15 years old) in Monforte d'Alba. Dark cherry, plum, spice and dark iron give the wine weight and density. Compared to the 2015 vintage, I found this edition to be lighter and shorter in terms of mouthfeel, with soft tannins and an open-knit, accessible personality." Wine Advocate
"Concentrated cherry and currant flavors are joined by iron, tar, eucalyptus and tobacco elements in this dense red. It stays vibrant and persistent, ending with a lightly chewy feel." Wine Spectator
"Pecchenino’s 2016 Barolo Bussia is fabulous. Dark, ample and expansive, the 2016 possesses tremendous richness and yet retains a fairly classic sense of structure. Black cherry, menthol, tobacco, licorice and incense bring out the dark, virile side of Nebbiolo. Hints of orange peel, cinnamon and star anise add layers of nuance. This muscular, potent Barolo needs time so soften, but it is impressive in the early going." Vinous
"The intense burnt oranges and rose petals are captivating here. Incense, Thai spa and candlewax add to the complexity. Tight and suggestive with bursting acidity and tensely drawn, structured tannins. Long and very vibrant and transparent. Drink from 2025." James Suckling

Barolo “Sorano” DOCG 2016
Matteo's classic from the commune of Serralunga d'Alba. Sorano shows exactly the weight and power we associate with this unique subzone of Barolo. The strong side of the Nebbiolo takes centre stage here, with the freshness of the fruit taking a distinguished yet noticeable back seat. Aromas of dried blackberries, ploughed earth, tobacco and crushed rock. Gripping tannins on the finish noticeably demand a longer aeration, and with further bottle ageing, lovers of powerful Barolo will get their money's worth. SUPERIORE.DE
"Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Fine cherry and sweet raspberry nose with minerally, savoury hints. Supple and suave cherry fruit lined with sandpapery tannins. Fruit-driven finish with supple acidity and tannic grip pulling the whole into shape." Jancis Robinson
"The aromas of graphite, eucalyptus, cherry, leather, white pepper and earth combine in this red wine with an open structure. It firms up on the finish, yet is approachable thanks to the fine harmony of its elements. The length is also excellent." Wine Spectator
"Matteo Ascheri favours short, hot fermentations that give the wine an immediate power and intensity that you can feel right away, especially in a classic vintage like this. His 2016 Barolo Sorano definitely shows the darker colour and stronger flavour concentration that comes with the fruit grown in Serralunga d'Alba. The wine's bouquet is generous and rich with red rose petals, liquorice, tar and smoky road asphalt. As you would expect, the tannins in Barolo Sorano are more pronounced, with a certain harshness that can only be softened after a few years of bottle ageing. What really drives this wine is the quality and the contained intensity of the 2016 fruit. It is certainly a classic, even if patience is required." Wine Advocate
"This full-bodied red is earthy and full of personality, with aromas of camphor, new leather, game and ripe black fruit. On the concentrated palate, chewy tannins accompany fleshy Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, truffle and tobacco." Wine Enthusiast

Barolo “Ascheri” DOCG 2016
Matteo describes it as a wine that has as much to do with the place as with its family roots: coincidentally, his surname Ascheri is also the official name of the vineyard located in the municipality of La Morra. For this top wine of the house, as for the Coste & Bricco, the following applies: Barolo Ascheri is only produced in the best years.
Its bouquet and also its complex taste make it the most complete wine of the house. Wonderful in precision and structure, this Barolo has the highest recognition value in this top vintage and at the same time represents the signature of the house in an impressive way. SUPERIORE.DE
"New leather, camphor, wild berry and fragrant blue-flower aromas mingle together on this structured red. It's full bodied and dense, delivering succulent morello cherry, crushed raspberry licorice and tobacco framed in firm, fine-grained tannins. You'll also detect the warmth of evident alcohol, but thanks to the concentrated fruit, it doesn't dominate." Wine Enthusiast
"The Ascheri 2016 Barolo Ascheri is a beautiful wine that reveals a broad range of classic Nebbiolo aromas. The wine's bouquet is stirring and deep with cleverly contained intensity. As I mentioned before, the Ascheri winemaking process sees a short 16-day fermentation, at 30 degrees Celsius in the case of this wine. As a result, the aromas are clear, strong and direct. You could apply any number of descriptors to describe the bouquet: dried cherry fruit, rose, pressed violets, crushed stone, red clay and autumnal leaf. The wine is well supported at the back by firm tannins that come thanks to this classic, cellar-worthy vintage." Wine Advocate

Barolo “Coste & Bricco” DOCG 2016
We are overjoyed that we were able to obtain some wooden boxes of this extremely rare and only in the very best vintages produced drop. It is not for nothing that he leads the exclusive selection of Matteo's "collectible wines".
Sparkling ruby grenade. Clearly defined, fine nose with pronounced notes of raspberry and plum, with thyme in the background. Very polished and delicate on the nose, the aroma is incredibly complex with notes of wild berries, cherries, spices and herbs. On the palate with a firm pressure, yet very juicy and in the finish with an elegance and potential that is second to none. Whoever does not let this already almost perfect wine mature in the cellar for another five or more years will miss a lot! SUPERIORE.DE
"This is the top-shelf wine from Matteo Ascheri and also the wine with the smallest production numbers, with just 2,800 bottles made. Fruit comes from two parcels in the Sorano cru of Serralunga d'Alba: the Vigna Coste and the Vigna Bricco. The 2016 Barolo Coste & Bricco is indeed profound and compelling, thanks to its very elegant and powerful DNA. This wine sneaks up on the senses with mounting intensity that starts off with red fruit and wild berries and eventually transitions to white licorice, ash, smoke and pretty mineral nuances. The wine is focused and bright with abundant Nebbiolo typicity. Fermentation is short at just two weeks, and the wine ages in 18-hectoliter new and used oak for 22 months. I see that the prices of Ascheri's wines seem to reflect availability; however, the quality is excellent, making this bottle ever more precious." Wine Advocate

Barolo “Falletto” DOCG 2016
With the exceptional 2016 vintage, Falletto once again proves what this wine is capable of. Multi-layered bouquet with subtle sweetness, an inner fragrance and nuances that are generally only found in Giacosa's Red Label Riservas. The Falletto impresses with the intensity of its dark fruits and the excellent overall balance. The extroverted personality of the vintage is evident, especially when the wine meanders in the glass for some time left to its own devices. Menthol, flowers and liquorice give the wine refined complex notes on the finish. This is a particularly racy Barolo from Bruno Giacosa, which also has an impressive characteristic elegance! SUPERIORE.DE
"A massive wine from Serralunga, this displays dense cherry and red-fruit aromas that are solid and brooding. Full-bodied with firm tannins that are chunky now, this has immense concentration and force, if not the ethereal quality that marks Giacosa's supreme wines. But it's balanced, with the high alcohol not discernible, and given the slight furriness on the very long finish, this needs time." Decanter
"This pretty red offers distinctive mint, black tea, cherry, tar, iron and tobacco aromas and flavors. Firm and dry, with the tobacco and tea notes echoing on the finish. Shows plenty of finesse." Wine Spectator
"This is a really dense red with intensity and beauty, showing dried fruit, such as strawberries, as well as chocolate, tar, hazelnuts and meat. Really complex and rich. Opulent, yet tense with dusty tannins. Extremely long. Great finish. Hard not to drink now, but will age incredibly well. Try after 2025." James Suckling
"The Bruno Giacosa 2016 Barolo Falletto (white label) brings us another extraordinary expression from a classic vintage. Serralunga d'Alba fruit is full, generous and thickly layered in a manner that you always hope to encounter when lucky enough to drink pedigree Nebbiolo. There is enormous density here and power and grace; however, the Barolo Falletto is seemingly weightless and ever so delicate as it warms smoothly over the senses. Crisp cherry and blackberry are followed by delicate tones of crushed stone and iron ore. Bright tones of grilled herb and blue flower lift gently from the bouquet and add to the balanced intensity of this collectors' vintage." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigneti del Versante” DOCG 2016 · MAGNUM in OWC
Warm, very seductive aromas of black cherries, flowers, tobacco, minerals and undergrowth emerge from the bright ruby red. The interplay between the rich fruit and the classic structure is ingenious. The taste captivates with its intensity, luxurious and mysteriously dark. Love at first sight! SUPERIORE.DE
"Stands out positively; gossamer reduction, liquorice, violets, cool herbal spice, menthol and mint, blue fruit, ultra elegant already in the aroma; continues on the palate spicy and drinky, contemporary and classic at the same time, animating for all its power." Meiningers Sommelier
"The organic and biodynamic Pian dell'Orino 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneti del Versante is drinking beautifully right now. Released later than its peers, this Sangiovese showcases the power, precision and elegance of the iconic 2016 vintage. Yet the wine also offers enough distance from the harvest to enable additional complexity thanks to barrel and bottle aging. A dark garnet appearance sets the stage, and the bouquet follows in lockstep with pressed cherry, dark plum, spice, balsam herb and an unexpected interjection of freshly cut red rose. The wine's aromas are delivered with generous and transparent intensity. On the palate, Vigneti del Versante is rich and dense, offering silky tannins with crunch. There is a hint of salty mineral at the very end. Exactly 7,556 bottles exist." Wine Advocate
"Crushed stone, wild herbs and tart black cherries lift up from the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneti del Versante, but that’s only the beginning. With time, this blossoms further, gaining a sweeter fruit profile and autumnal spices with hints of shaved cedar. Its textures are remarkably refined and silky in feel, with an intense concentration of tart red fruits, yet energy is maintained through brilliant acidity, as grippy tannins build steadily toward the close. The Vigneti del Versante tapers off with amazing length, youthful poise and a balanced structure, promising many, many years of positive evolution. This is really something to behold. I tasted the 2016 from a freshly opened bottle and from one that had been opened for two days prior that showed no signs of decline; in fact, it blossomed further. Simply stunning." Vinous

Barolo Lazzarito DOCG 2016 · Double MAGNUM in OWC
Barolo Lazzarito impresses every year with its precision and class - two qualities that are not too common in the Nebbiolo of the Serralunga area. Iron, smoke and white pepper flow into the nose, in the glass these impressions are prolonged by a touch of pomegranate, red cherry jam, wild flowers and blood orange. Vietti's Lazzarito always stands for power and finesse, too, and has been in no way inferior to its "colleagues" from Ravera and Rocche for a long time. SUPERIORE.DE
"Shiny, medium-dense ruby. Classic nose with notes of rose, cranberry and fresh cherry, plus some earthy components. Hits a real peacock wheel on the palate, deep tannins embedded in lots of sweet melt, warm and round, very long finish." Falstaff
"Very complex aromas of dried strawberries, fresh mushrooms and some sour cherries. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and extremely tannic, yet ever so fine and polished. Wonderful length. Strength with finesse for a young Barolo." James Suckling
"Although this leading producer changed ownership in 2016, the winemaking team remains unaltered. Most of its Barolos come from Castiglione Falletto, but the estate also makes Lazzarito from Serralunga, a wine aged in barriques as well as casks. The nose shows reserved red fruits and is lightly perfumed. Dense and very concentrated, it packs a punch with its hefty but ripe tannins. Assertive and very youthful, this is built to last and has impressive drive on the very long finish." Decanter
"Juniper, sage, green tea, cherry and tar flavors mark this savory red, which is rich, backed by a bracing structure, yet remains balanced and long on the finish. Very pure and vibrant, with a fine matrix of tannins." Wine Spectator
"The 2016 Barolo Lazzarito is another stunning wine in this range. The 2016 is the first vintage of the Lazzarito I can remember tasting in which intensely mineral notes accompany the more savory, earthy notes that are so typical of this site. Graphite, sage, dried flowers, crushed rocks, menthol, dried rose petal, mint, licorice and blood orange race out of the glass in a breathtaking, towering Barolo that hits all the right notes from the start to its chiseled, strikingly detailed finish. The 2016 Lazzarito is one of the most classically austere wines in this range. In a word: Magnificent." Vinous
"Drawing its fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the Vietti 2016 Barolo Lazzarito is built like a pyramid. It is grounded by a thick base of robust fruit and power and soars upward in intensity thanks to its beautifully lifted bouquet. It reveals direct and solid lines with blackberry, plum, spice, tar, licorice, candied orange peel and truffle-infused earth. A second wave of aromas offers dark minerals and ferrous qualities such as iron ore and rust. Baroli from Serralunga d'Alba are often in a category apart thanks to their richness and sheer fruit weight. With extra aeration, Lazzarito delivers mint, balsam herb or Fernet-Branca." Wine Advocate

Barolo “Falletto” DOCG 2016 · 6 bottles in OWC

"An almost ideal growing season with all the conditions for a great vintage falls at a time when so many winemakers are in their best years, have left the phase of experimentation behind and have found their personal style. The result is a vintage full of truly spectacular, breathtaking wines that captures all the pedigrees that Nebbiolo and Barolo are capable of.
2016 is a classic, late-ripening year, characterised by a leisurely October harvest and no real shocks. The year has started slowly. Only in April were temperatures above the ten-year average, while the first part of the year was also quite dry. In July, August and September temperatures were above average, but without excessive heat.
What I remember most about this summer is the unusually low humidity and the incredible purity of the light, which together created spectacular views that you normally only see in winter. The timely rains in July and August helped to keep things in balance. Most importantly, however, evening temperatures began to fall in September, creating the perfect conditions for a late harvest. In 2016, the harvest began about 5 days later than average. Many producers prolonged their maceration, always a sign of healthy grapes and a high quality year.
When it comes to tasting, the 2016s stand out above all for their exceptional balance and harmony. Regardless of what the figures on paper show, in vintages such as 2006, 2010, 2013 and 2014 the perception of acidity and tannin is higher because these attributes stand out. But in 2016, especially with the best wines, nothing really stands out because they are so perfectly balanced. Many wines remind me of the 2008, with a little more body and structure, but very much in the same direction. Some wines show a sense of classic austerity reminiscent of 1996 or 2006, but they are the exception rather than the norm.
For many winemakers, the 2016s are not only epic, they are career-defining wines. Chiara and Giorgio Boschis at E. Pira, Maria Teresa Mascarello, Fabio Alessandria at Burlotto and Luca and Elena Currado at Vietti are among the producers who produce breathtaking wines of the highest quality. But 2016 has plenty of depth and class right across the producer world. Many entry-level bottlings are fabulous, this is always an important indicator for a groundbreaking vintage. Examples are wines from Gianfranco Alessandria, Azelia, Burlotto, Barale, Elvio Cogno, Renato Corino Poderi e Cantine Oddero, Carlo Revello and Vietti. Finally, the 2016 is incredibly expressive in terms of location, which is one of the most fundamental qualitative attributes of all great Piedmontese vintages". Antonio Galloni Vinous
