• Barolo "Le Coste di Monforte" DOCG 2016

Barolo “Le Coste di Monforte” DOCG 2016

Warm garnet red. In the bouquet cherry, rosewood and some tar. Through and through powerful, masculine Barolo with a cornucopia of fruit, robust tannins and a highly lively finish. Needs still 5-8 years up to the beginning of the optimal drinking maturity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Of these three new Baroli from Pecchenino, the 2016 Barolo le Coste di Monforte shows the greatest focus and sharpness. The other two wines are noticeably softer in terms of their aromatic direction compared to this wine. Le Coste di Monforte offers dark fruit, balsam herb, spice, campfire ash and ferrous earth in nicely balanced proportions. This wine sees long skin maceration times lasting 60 days (at 28 degrees Celsius), concluding with 36 months in oak cask. This gives the wine its rich flavor profile. Fruit comes from a site measuring just under a hectare at a high altitude of 450 meters above sea level. " Robert Parker

"A mix of pure cherry, raspberry, underbrush and iron are the hallmarks of this dense, powerful red. It's bracing and flirts with austerity as the steely structure exerts itself on the lingering finish. Patience required." Wine Spectator

"A ripe, velvety red with lots of ripe strawberries, chocolate and some hazelnuts. It’s full-bodied with ripe tannins and a flavorful finish. Better after 2022." James Suckling

"The 2016 Barolo Le Coste di Monforte is utterly beguiling in the glass. Rose petal, cedar, mint, sweet pipe tobacco and blood orange open first. Deep and layered on the palate, the 2016 is exceptionally beautiful and harmonious for a young Barolo. Time in the glass brings out its myriad layers of nuance." Vinous

    • Barolo Bussia DOCG 2016

      Barolo Bussia DOCG 2016

Full bouquet of dark fruits, spices, tar, smoke and wild mushrooms. Powerful on the palate with lots of berry fruit, nice inner sweetness and considerable acid wire, classic grippy tannins and a rich, long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Pecchenino 2016 Barolo Bussia is a dark, sultry and heady expression of Nebbiolo from young vines (about 15 years old) in Monforte d'Alba. Dark cherry, plum, spice and dark iron give the wine weight and density. Compared to the 2015 vintage, I found this edition to be lighter and shorter in terms of mouthfeel, with soft tannins and an open-knit, accessible personality." Robert Parker

"Concentrated cherry and currant flavors are joined by iron, tar, eucalyptus and tobacco elements in this dense red. It stays vibrant and persistent, ending with a lightly chewy feel." Wine Spectator

"Pecchenino’s 2016 Barolo Bussia is fabulous. Dark, ample and expansive, the 2016 possesses tremendous richness and yet retains a fairly classic sense of structure. Black cherry, menthol, tobacco, licorice and incense bring out the dark, virile side of Nebbiolo. Hints of orange peel, cinnamon and star anise add layers of nuance. This muscular, potent Barolo needs time so soften, but it is impressive in the early going." Vinous

"The intense burnt oranges and rose petals are captivating here. Incense, Thai spa and candlewax add to the complexity. Tight and suggestive with bursting acidity and tensely drawn, structured tannins. Long and very vibrant and transparent. Drink from 2025." James Suckling

      Barolo “Cerretta” DOCG 2011

Excellent site Barolo Cerretta, very powerful and elegant, with the classic spicy cherry bouquet, very nicely articulated. Full fruit after forest berries at the palate, pleasantly silky tannin and a good acid form the luxuriant taste structure. SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark berry, pressed flower, iron, leather and spice aromas come together on this firmly structured wine. The full-bodied palate delivers juicy black cherry, eucalyptus, anise and clove alongside big, velvety tannins. A licorice note closes the lingering finish. It’s already almost approachable but hold for more complexity." Wine Enthusiast

Barolo “Coste di Rose” DOCG 2017

Coste di Rose presents itself straightforward, driven forward and impresses already at a young age with its refreshing frankness. Very precise bouquet of cherry, plum, liquorice, spices and menthol, then on the palate a wide and multilayered stretched fruit arch with lots of juice and power, supporting tannins and a full, long, mineral-minty finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Youthful mid ruby. Gorgeous, savoury leafy cherry fruit on the nose. Fragrant, elegant fruit palate. Very poised and sappy and with long coating tannins supporting the fruit. Can be approached now." Jancis Robinson

"The 2017 Barolo Coste di Rose is pretty, supple and inviting. Some of the tannins need to resolve, but this is a young Barolo after all. The Coste di Rose doesn't have the sensuality of the Albe or the pedigree of the Viole, but it nevertheless has so much to give. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mint, crushed rocks and sage are some of the many notes that linger. I won't be surprised if the 2017 is even better than this note suggests once it softens a bit." Vinous

    • Barolo "Cerretta" DOCG 2012

      Barolo “Cerretta” DOCG 2012

Barolo Baudana from the single vineyard Cerretta presents itself energetic and intense with a scent of black cherries, wild herbs, smoke and tar. Convincing also at the palate with multilayered flavours and textures, strength and structure. The powerful tannin and the stately acidity show unmistakably the style of a classic Barolo. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2012 Barolo Cerretta is richer, deeper and darker than the Baudana. Black cherry, smoke, licorice and dark spices open up first, followed by scents of sage, rosemary and mint that add complexity. In 2012, the Cerretta is more about brawn than finesse. Layers of fruit fill out the wine's ample frame nicely, but above all else, the Cerretta is distinguished for its raw, almost animal, power." VINOUS

"A bright, floral-, strawberry-, cherry- and herb-flavored version, allied to an elegant profile. Picks up mineral and tobacco notes as this cruises to a lengthy conclusion. Though stylish, this has ample grip and complexity." Wine Spectator

"Raspberry compote, star anise, grilled herb and sun baked earth and a whiff of leather are some of the aromas you'll find on this structured Barolo. On the full-bodied palate, chopped mint, licorice and tobacco accent ripe Morello cherry and juicy raspberry." Wine Enthusiast

"The 2013 Barolo Cerretta is a bit more lifted, aromatic and gracious in style than the Baudana. Sweet red cherry, pine, mint, herbs, licorice and wild flowers give the Cerretta its distinctive lifted personality. In 2013, the Cerretta is a wine of pure and total grace. Convincing also at the palate with multilayered flavours and textures, strength and structure. The powerful tannin and the stately acidity show unmistakably the style of a classic Barolo. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Cerretta vineyard is distinguished by thick red clay soils at its lower elevations. This segment of the vineyard provides the power and structure that holds this wine so firmly together. Indeed, that sense of power and dark fruit momentum outpaces the delicate and nuanced characteristics that are generally attributed to the cooler and immediate 2014 vintage. The 2014 Barolo Cerretta is a powerhouse wine—packed tight with dark fruit, spice and licorice—that should hold steady over the next 10-20 years of cellar aging." Robert Parker

"Gravitas and pure power are the signatures of the 2014 Barolo Cerretta. The black cherry, plum, lavender, sage and menthol notes add to an impression of dark, brooding intensity to go with the wine's vertical sense of structure. This tannic, massive Barolo is likely to require a number of years in bottle to become approachable." VINOUS

      Barolo “Mosconi” DOCG 2014 (BIO)

Barolo Mosconi is beautifully aromatic. Elegant bouquet of mineral-rich limestone soils, powerful, rich and juicy on the palate, the tannins well interwoven, structure and length exemplary. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brilliant ruby with a slightly brightening edge. Compact and dense nose, full-bodied of blackberries and dark cherries, with some liquorice and truffle. Firm and gripping on the palate, shows a lot of grippy, dense tannin, dark berry fruit, in the finish salty and long, leathery." Falstaff

"The 2014 Barolo Mosconi is the most robust and structured of the three Barolos. Chiara Bochis believes in making her single-vineyard wines even in a difficult vintage such as this. She rejects the idea of blending all her fruit together to make a single wine. Indeed, her cru wines are very distinct. Each shows its individual characteristics with greater precision, I would argue, in this slender and more ethereal vintage. The 2014 vintage is a natural spring board for highlighting vineyard personalities. This is a cool vintage, but Mosconi surprises the senses for the plump ripeness of its dark fruit favors." Robert Parker

"Plenty of dried berries and herbs. Some meat, woody spices and a wealth of fresh red and pink roses, making this very fragrant. The palate has assertive acid cut and impressive depth. The elegant yet firm tannins hold the red-plum finish long. A great result with real tension." James Suckling

"A mix of cherry, eucalyptus, iron and tobacco aromas and flavors are gripped by dense, dusty tannins. On the darker side, with a kernel of sweet fruit on the finish. Fine intensity." Wine Spectator

"Chiara Boschis’ take on Monforte’s Wagnerian terroir translates it into a minerally, fruit-driven symphony with refined tannins and graceful flavour. This is a brilliant compromise between acidity and sweetness." Decanter

    • Barolo "Cerretta" DOCG 2015

      Barolo “Cerretta” DOCG 2015

Deep red with ruby reflections. In the nose ethereal-sweet aromas of black cherry. Cerretta 2015 from the single vineyard of the same name is even juicier and tighter on the palate than the Baudana. Its character is fresher and more primary in the overall line of all Vajra Barolo, but clearly harder and with initially young and dry tannins. This tightly packed Barolo gains sweetness and complexity with aeration. Like the Baudana and Bricco dell Viole bottlings, it demands several years of patience from its owner, which, however, will then be exuberantly rewarded. No wine for beginners, if I may say so. SUPERIORE.DE

"Some ten years ago, Aldo Vajra leased and subsequently bought this small Serralunga property. Ceretta can be an austere wine but this hot vintage suited it and Vajra employed a long, submerged-cap fermentation to extract the finest tannins. It's deep in colour, rich and full-bodied with ample cherry fruit. It's very ripe but forceful too, enhanced by a velvety texture and fine structure. Harmonious and long." Decanter

"The 2015 Barolo Cerretta offers a slightly richer and textured expression from Serralunga d'Alba fruit. The wine is slightly riper compared to the Barolo Baudana from the same vintage, with dark fruit aromas of wild cherry, rose, cola and tilled earth. The wine is similarly tight and firm at its core; however, this Nebbiolo from the Cerretta vineyard offers more succulent padding and volume." Robert Parker

"Ripe and juicy, displaying macerated cherry and plum flavors, complemented by menthol and rosemary notes. A line of mineral underscores all the elements, revealing a dense matrix of fine tannins on the finish." Wine Spectator

"Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Beautiful flowery cherry nose that is still a little bit reductive. Balsamic hint and a touch of liquorice. Supple and with savoury minerally impact on the palate. Gorgeous balance between savoury fruit and firm, savoury tannins, like sucking ripe stalks." Jancis Robinson

"The Ravera cru of Novello is quietly growing in prestige and consistency. It is becoming one of the latest additions to an elite list of grand cru sites in the Barolo appellation. That quality is demonstrated in a difficult vintage such as this. The 2014 Barolo Ravera is a tight and polished expression with a glossy and gleaming personality. The fruit is fine-tuned and small in range, but it hits the senses with pinpoint precision. The wine shows the taut tightness of its youth and will flesh out with a few more years of cellar aging." Robert Parker

"Pure cherry and strawberry fruit graces this delicate Barolo. Elements of licorice, tar and mineral add complexity and there is adequate structure. Still, this should be approachable early for the light weight and balance." Wine Spectator

"Cogno's 2014 Barolo Ravera is tense and crystalline in feel, with striking translucence and a level of purity in its flavors and textures that is beguiling. The inner tension in the 2014 is simply alluring. Bright, red-toned fruit, floral overtones and piercing saline underpinnings all come to life in this compelling, deeply expressive Barolo from Elvio Cogno." Antonio Galloni

"The fruit and depth of this wine is very pretty. With brightness and transparency. Plums, and cherries with dried flowers and spices. Medium to full body, bright fruit and acidity. A powerful finish. A fantastic 2014." James Suckling

      Barolo “Mosconi” DOCG 2012

Barolo Mosconi, the first wine of the winery from this southern location in Monforte, is beautifully aromatic. Elegant bouquet of mineral-rich limestone floors, powerful, rich and juicy on the palate, the tannins well interwoven, structure and length exemplary. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2012 Barolo Mosconi is one of the big surprises of this tasting. This is a gorgeous expression with a deep and enduring sense of balance. The wine offers excellent intensity with black fruit and spice, nicely contrasted against more subtle tones of licorice, red rose and polished river stone. The tannins are firm and tight." Robert Parker

"Very delicate and aromatic with dried flowers and raspberry, blackberry undertones. Full body, yet balanced and very refined. Love the white pepper and berry aftertaste." James Suckling

    • Barolo "Baudana" DOCG 2014

      Barolo “Baudana” DOCG 2014

Fresh, sparkling ruby garnet. Opens with notes of pickled anchovies, then leather and dark wild raspberry. At the palate a lot of close-meshed, stoffiges tannin, pulls through rapidly, fine fruit, in the final firm pressure. Put away for some more years. SUPERIORE.DE

"Leasing and then acquiring the Luigi Baudana estate in Serralunga has given the Vajra family access to more fine vineyards. The result in 2014 is a delight, with a sweet, generous raspberry nose that shows both zest and charm. Medium-bodied, this is made in a gentle style that's not extracted but has sufficient tannin to give some grip. A firm mid-palate shows solid fruit and good persistence, followed by a long, balanced finish." Decanter

"Flavors of cherry, currant, eucalyptus, wild herbs, tar and iron are supported by dense tannins in this red. Though firm and compact, this remains long and detailed on the finish." Wine Spectator

"Located beyond the sprawling Fontanafredda estate, Baudana has consistently maintained its reputation for top-notch Nebbiolo. In fact, those who farmed this vineyard never had difficulty selling its fruit. Barolo Baudana was one of the first crus to be exported successfully into foreign markets. The site sees sandy limestone mixed with veins of heavier blue clay. You get both elegance and structure as a result. The 2014 Barolo Baudana reveals black and purple fruit characteristics with ethereal tones of smoke, tar and spice on the finish." Robert Parker

"A darker side of Nebbiolo emerges from the 2014 Barolo Baudana. Powerful but also supple, the 2014 is a wine of pure, arresting beauty. Sweet red cherry, kirsch and floral notes meld together in a striking, textured Barolo that is a joy to taste, even at this early stage." VINOUS

    • Barolo Ravera DOCG 2014

      Barolo Ravera DOCG 2014

Barolo Ravera from Vajra is an earthy, rich wine with a robust tannin structure and a well measured acidity - an impressive wine, whose climax in the next few years can already be looked forward to. SUPERIORE.DE

"Tasted blind. Surprisingly dark ruby for this vintage. Brooding richness on the nose. Plenty of sour cherry on the palate and firm, somewhat drying tannins. This is still very youthful, and unsettled." Jancis Robinson

"This rich red is laced with cherry fruit and feels approachable now. Offers firm underlying tannins, along with accents of mineral and tobacco. Balanced, with a long finish." Wine Spectator

"A stark contrast to the Bricco delle Viole, Vajra's 2014 Barolo Ravera is a tannic, powerful wine. There is quite a bit of power and depth, but the tannins are also rustic and a touch rough around the edges. The 2014 is going to need time to settle down." VINOUS

"The 2014 Barolo Ravera is indeed a fuller and more structured expression. The bouquet opens to dark fruit, iodine and mineral nuances. Ravera is a low-altitude vineyard from an estate that is specialized in high-altitude Nebbiolo farming. That added power is well suited to this thinner vintage." Robert Parker

    • Barolo "Baudana" DOCG 2013

      Barolo “Baudana” DOCG 2013

Fresh, sparkling ruby garnet. Opens with notes of pickled anchovies, then leather and dark wild raspberry. At the palate a lot of close-meshed, stoffiges tannin, pulls through rapidly, fine fruit, in the final firm pressure. Put away for some more years. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brilliant, medium ruby. Seems austere and quite closed in mouth and nose. Only with air a scent of red berries and floral hints develops. At the palate classic tannin structure, connected with a slowly intensifying, very pure fruit. Exceedingly vital, lots of inner tension and minerality." Weinwisser

"The 2013 Barolo Baudana opens with striking, beguiling aromatics. Deep, pliant and sensual on the palate, the 2013 exudes fruit intensity to the point the tannins are nearly buried. Intense savory and mineral notes provide an underpinning of virile intensity that builds into the super-expressive finish." VINOUS

"Seems open and forthcoming for the cherry, black currant and floral aromas and flavors, but this red has some punch too. The dense tannins provide support, while tobacco, green olive and mineral notes add depth. Terrific length." Wine Spectator

    • Barolo Ravera DOCG 2017

      Barolo Ravera DOCG 2017

Ravera is the most powerful of Vajra's formidable Barolo line-up every year. Radiant, intense ruby red. Very intense, fruity nose with notes of ripe wild raspberries, blackberries, also some dark currant juice, in the background some laurel. Ravera presents itself very juicy in approach and course, shows a lot of crisp cherry fruit, opens with fine-meshed, present tannin, which is very well integrated. In the final a long reverberation. SUPERIORE.DE

"Transparent garnet. Broad, sweet, chestnut sort of aromas on the nose. Big-shouldered and quite concentrated. Very complete and with a minerally undertow. This is a bit of a charmer with great presence. Even a hint of red-cherry fruit that seems to be overpowering the (considerable) tannin. Beautiful balance in this evidently serious wine." Jancis Robinson

"The 2017 Barolo Ravera is gorgeous right out of the gate. I am so impressed with its depth and pedigree. Rose petal, sweet red berry fruit, lavender, spice and dried herbs are all finely delineated in a Barolo of tremendous presence. Orange peel, cinnamon and cedar develop later, adding shades of dimension. Time in the glass brings out the wine's stature and power. The 2017 is going to be fascinating to follow. Today, it is just breathtaking. That's all there is to it." Vinous

    • Barolo DOCG 2016

      Barolo DOCG 2016

Pio Cesare's Barolo is made from grapes from vineyards in Serralunga, Grinzane Cavour, La Morra and Novello. Ruby garnet with light red rim. On the nose tea, rose petals, some liquorice, plus plums and small red berries. Fleshy, fruity and dense on the palate, beautiful raspberry and blackberry tones, well-built tannin with a creamy core, very long and engaging. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, rich garnet red. Appealing and inviting nose, first some leather and tobacco, then after cranberries, ripe cherries and blackberries, playful and multilayered. Sturdy and firm on the palate, opens with plenty of tightly woven tannin, very powerful, pressure and rich bite on the back end, laid out for a long life." Falstaff

"Widely sourced, from family-owned vineyards in Novello and Grinzane Cavour as well as more celebrated villages, this Barolo shows admirable opulence on the nose, with sweet cherry fruit but no trace of jamminess. Firm and spicy, it displays excellent vigour and presence and good acidity gives persistence and refinement. Long." Decanter

"The 2016 Barolo is a terrific example of the year. Bright acids and veins of supporting tannins give the 2016 its super-classic feel. Sweet red cherry fruit, chalk, mint, dried flowers, cedar, anise and sweet pipe tobacco all grace this translucent, mid-weight Barolo. Best of all, the 2016 can be enjoyed with just a few more years in bottle. It is a gorgeous wine and a good relative value within Barolo." Vinous

"Pretty sweetness and ripeness to this with cherries, dried strawberries and chocolate. It’s full-bodied with round, firm tannins. Very long and intense. A little tight now. Complex and subtle at this stage. Give it two or three years to come around." James Suckling

"Traditionalists happily fall back to this wine from Pio Cesare. This historic winery, now in its fifth generation and located within the city limits of Alba, takes care to shape a classic interpretation without too many extra bells or whistles. The fact that Pio Cesare now has the flashier Barolo Ornato and the newly created Barolo Mosconi, only gives more importance to this wine. The Pio Cesare 2016 Barolo offers deep, dark fruit with a mingling of spice, smoke, tar and smoke. This wine represents a blend of fruit from five comuni, or villages: Cascina Ornato, La Serra and Briccolina in Serralunga d'Alba; Gustava and Garretti in Grinzane Cavour; Roncaglie in La Morra; Ravera in Novello; and starting with the 2015 vintage, Mosconi in Monforte d’Alba." Robert Parker

"Enticingly fragrant, this wine offers alluring scents of iris, rose, perfumed berry and wild herb. It's full bodied and elegant, delivering crushed raspberry, juicy Marasca cherry, star anise and orange zest set against a backbone of taut, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it balanced and lends intensity." Wine Enthusiast

Barolo Ginestra “Vigna del Gris” DOCG 2017

The grapes for the immensely deep Vigna del Gris come from vines that are over 40 years old from the approximately 1 hectare parcel of the same name. In the bouquet beguilingly harmonious, with a convincing approach, weightless and powerful at the same time. On the palate, firm tannins and plenty of spice, with great texture and very juicy. Long, rich finish. Don't make the mistake of opening this wine before it has gained maturity, personality and elegance after more years in bottle. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2017 Barolo Ginestra Vigna del Gris is classic Gris. Bright, focused and taut in feel, 2017 offers up a whole range of floral and spice top notes that give the wine terrific freshness. On the palate, the Gris is a bit nervous, as it always is, yet with superb balance and class. The tannins can be a bit edgy here, but the 2017 keeps everything in check. This is such a pretty wine." Barolo “Baudana” DOCG 2017

Black cherry fruit, smoke, wild herbs, licorice and tar create a compelling backdrop of aromas, flavors and textures as this dazzling, energetic Barolo opens in the glass. The intense final is accompanied by delicate rose petals, lavender and a subtle mineral-salty vein. Its stable tannin framework awaits a few more years of bottle aging, as is typically the case with a classic Serralunga Barolo. A wine full of energy and intensity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Youthful mid ruby. Perfumed and inviting with earthy hints and concentrated fruit. Generous mouthful of cherry, which at the same time is very contained and with a good dose of acidity. Very fine, persistent tannins underneath clinging to the fruit. Finely balanced and nervy at the same time." Jancis Robinson

"The 2017 Barolo Baudana is such a gorgeous wine. It, too conveys the power of Serralunga, but with a bit less heft than is typically the case. Sweet dark cherry, iron, cedar, rose petal, mint and white pepper give the 2017 its effusive, inviting personality. This is such a tremendous showing." Vinous

    • Barolo "Cerretta" DOCG 2017

      Barolo “Cerretta” DOCG 2017

Deep red with ruby reflections. In the nose ethereal-sweet aromas of black cherry. Cerretta from the single vineyard of the same name is even juicier and tighter on the palate than the Baudana.

"Youthful ruby. Minerally, smoky/earthy cherry nose with a hint of exotic spice and black tea leaves. Lots of concentration but at the moment more subdued than their 2017 Baudana. Gorgeous, supple fruit and rich, truly powerful tannins that are still a little demanding right now. Concentrated, austere and still closed, but with lots of potential." Jancis Robinson

"A dark, somber wine, the 2017 Barolo Cerretta shows the more potent, brooding side of Serralunga. Black cherry, gravel, smoke, cured meats, cloves and menthol add to an impression of virile intensity and pure power. Readers will have to be patient here, but there is certainly a ton to look forward to. This is another impressive showing from Baudana and the Vajra family." Vinous

On the nose very open and appealing of dark cherries and raspberries, plus notes of mint, cedar, rose petals and sage. "The 2017 Barolo Castelletto Vigna Pressenda is a gorgeous, exotic wine. Rose petal, orange peel, cinnamon, cedar and red berry fruit all open in a beautifully layered, super-expressive Barolo from Conterno-Fantino. Beams of Castelletto tannin extend the finish while lending a real feeling of vibrancy throughout. The balance of purity and structure is compelling." Vinous

    • Barolo Ravera DOCG 2017

      Barolo Ravera DOCG 2017

Single vineyard Barolo Ravera from 40 to 50 year old vines smells pure and intense of raspberries, strawberries and flowers. Full-bodied and silky on the palate, beautiful fruit, super-fine tannins and a wonderful length. SUPERIORE.DE

"Mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Glorious nose of perfumed, intensely lifted cherry. Hints of black pepper and minerally stony notes. Compact, embryonic and concentrated fruit on the palate with bags of powdery tannins and succulent acidity. Great balance and length. Lots of potential." Jancis Robinson

"The 2017 Barolo Ravera is a beautiful, precise wine. Bright acids and veins of tannin give the 2017 terrific energy that carries all the way through to the finish. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, chalk, white pepper and spice all open with a bit of coaxing. This is very nicely done." Vinous

"Cherry and candied strawberry with flowers and some dried earth. Full-bodied, layered and chewy. Lots of wet earth and mushroom to the red fruit." James Suckling

    • Barolo "Pisapola" DOCG 2016

      Barolo “Pisapola” DOCG 2016

Pisapola, from the vineyard of the same name in the municipality of Verduno, offers a beautiful richness of texture and an impressive softness. This wine is open and honest, with an approachable style that highlights red cherries, undergrowth, wild berries and roses in a very harmonious way. The tannin is precisely measured, and on the finish its harmony and balance again delight. Not a powerhouse, it highlights the character and elegance of this great Nebbiolo site all the more amiably and authentically. SUPERIORE.DE

"Tasted blind. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Compact and still-subdued nose with a hint of Moroccan leather. Supple and generous palate that is not yet entirely open. Polished, chewy tannins tasting of liquorice. Long but needs more time in the bottle to reveal its hidden depths." Jancis Robinson

"The 2016 Barolo Pisapola is the most airy and perfumed of the wines in this range. Crushed flowers, mint, cedar sweet pipe tobacco and red berry fruit all grace this finely-knit, mid-weight Barolo. The 2016 is understated, classy and very pretty." Vinous

"The Ascheri 2016 Barolo Pisapola is the most immediate and accessible of the single-vineyard series of wines offered by Matteo Ascheri, and this makes perfect sense given the younger, geologically speaking, Tortonian marl and Messinian calcareous clays of the site. The Pisapola cru is located in Verduno, and the wine reveals a looser, thinner texture that is characteristic of this subzone. The bouquet is subtle and elegant, although the wine's overall intensity clocks in at a lower threshold compared to some of the better-known comuni or villages of the Barolo appellation. It delivers a mild structure and a silky close." Robert Parker

"Rose, forest-berry, underbrush and new leather aromas shape the elegant nose. The savory palate mirrors the nose, featuring ripe Marasca cherry, licorice, menthol and a mineral note evoking rusty nail. Taut, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity provide support while a hint of game signals the close." Wine Enthusiast
