Vigna del Sorbo pleases at first sight with its full, strong ruby red. It takes over the nose with a clear, intense fruitiness, to which herbaceous notes add, before the wide, consistent flavour and the straightforward, flawless final set in. I came back to the wine about two hours later and discovered a pretty note of crushed aspirin or carbon, with more crushed flower. Camartina 2016 has exceptional finesse and elegance. Elegant, deep ruby red. Rich aromas of black and red berries such as black cherry and blueberry, joined by notes of ripe plum and tamarind. With further aeration then multi-layered notes of ivy, forest floor and freshly cut bark with hints of leather, sweet tobacco and liquorice. The full and silky body is framed by firm but well-integrated tannins supported by excellent acidity. Then, just before the long finish, ripe black fruits enriched by nutmeg and sweet spices. I tasted my sample after a double decant and was delighted by the depth of the wine and the immediate openness of the flavours. It is a symphony of dark fruit with black cherry, plum, spice and sweet tobacco. I particularly like a distant hint of medicinal or mentholated herbs, which I have detected in other wines with fruit from the Tignanello estate in 2017. There is also a drying mineral note of crushed chalk. The heat and dryness of the vintage have increased the aromatic intensity of the wine (yields were reduced by a third), but the mouthfeel is carefully crafted to maintain its softness and suppleness. "A blend of Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino from three far-removed vineyard parcels in different areas of Tuscany, the 2016 Colore is something of a pan-Tuscan wine.
