“Fallwind” Riesling Alto Adige DOC 2021
The evening fall winds of the Mendel Mountains give the entire terroir of the St. Michael-Eppan Winery its characteristics. They ensure cool nights, they give the grapes those extraordinary qualities that are characteristic for the aroma, the unmistakable freshness and the longevity of the wines. The fall wind is the natural force that blows over the vineyard every day, positively influencing the climate and supporting the valuable work of the cooperative winery's winegrowers.
The popular Riesling "Montiggl" becomes "Fallwind". The Fallwind wines are ambassadors of their terroir and reflect the strengths of the growing region in a unique way. Most of them are selected sites where viticulture has been practised for centuries. Strict quality guidelines, low yields, intensive manual work in the vineyard as well as gentle and individual maturation in the cellar make them what they are: Wines full of character, precise and unique, which convince every connoisseur with their varietal characteristics.
Montiggl Riesling is an extremely elegant wine. Germany's favourite grape has found the ideal terroir in parts of South Tyrol. Riesling makes high demands on the site and prefers a cool but very sunny climate. This is exactly what Montiggl offers. The porphyry soils there give it fruit, minerality and an ideal acid backbone. SUPERIORE.DE
"Gravel, grapefruit pith, lemon and lime blossom on the nose. Tangy and sharp on the palate, with medium body and a dry, citrusy finish." James Suckling
"This opens with aromas of ripe yellow stone fruit, citrus and mountain hay. The medium-bodied palate offers grapefruit, apricot and hints of flinty mineral alongside fresh acidity." Wine Enthusiast

“Schweizer” Pinot Nero Alto Adige DOC 2019
A masterpiece is the strong ruby red Pinot Nero Schweizer, which is only produced in the best vintages. Its bouquet is large, complex and reminiscent of very ripe small forest berries. These particular aromas are also found in the mouth, in combination with ripe, candied dark cherry and delicate floral and red berry notes. Juicy, wide palate, mouth-filling and with delicate, sveltenuances and an inviting and slightly tannic body that, together with the well-proportioned acidity, gives the wine a long life. SUPERIORE.DE
"Redcurrant, floral, spicy oak and forest floor bouquet. The tannins are ripe and smooth, and the acidity is nicely lifted; slightly peppery finish. Good ageing potential." Decanter
"Closed in its trademark screw cap, the Franz Haas 2019 Alto Adige Pinot Nero Schweizer is a a true beauty. There is so much freshness here, and the wine offers all the brilliant floral and wild berry tones that are characteristic of this delicate grape. This wine delivers those varietal aromas with flare. It ages in barrique for 12 months." Wine Advocate
"This has complex notes of sage, lemon leaves, porcini, black cherries, currants, nutmeg and tobacco. Vibrant and medium-bodied with tight-grained tannins. Beautiful balance of bright berry fruit and dark spice. Long and persistent." James Suckling
"From the undisputed master of Pinot Noir in South Tyrol, the nose has sensations of marasca cherries in alcohol, touches of pepper leaf and nuances of orange zest. The palate has iodine tannins, crispness, density and tension, with fruity-citrusy return and great persistence." Luca Gardini

“Manna” Bianco Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2020 · MAGNUM
The vineyards of the five grape varieties are located at altitudes between 350 and 800 metres above sea level and face southwest. The vines grow on –, –, – and marl soils.
As a young wine, Manna has golden yellow hues, after a few years of ageing they turn into strong golden tones. Manna is very special: complex, multi-layered with the bouquet of elderberry, pistachio, apricot, nutmeg and delicate rose petals. Concentrated, voluminous and at the same time elegant and complex on the palate. A wine that can be discovered from different perspectives in the course of its development and unfolds its character more and more. Even the young wine changes in the glass and surprises again and again. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright straw yellow with light reflections. In the nose elderflower, yellow blossoms, stone fruit and juicy lemon. On the palate mineral and fresh, with pressure, stretches racy over the tongue, long in the final." Falstaff
"Fleshy floral nose, interesting and expansive. The palate is poised and taut with juicy fruit flavours of white peach and mandarin, great texture cut through with tantalising acidity." Decanter
"This is a generous, medium–bodied white that plays important cards in terms of length and texture. Rich apricot and orchard fruit segue to dusty mineral. It ends on a dry note, but also shows softness and richness." Wine Advocate
"Sliced pear, green pineapple, fennel, elderflower and lime zest on the nose. Medium–bodied with a vibrant, flavorful and exotic palate. Plenty of citrus and tropical fruit. Juicy and tangy." James Suckling

“Sgarzon” Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2020 (BIO) · MAGNUM in gift box
Sgarzon is a single vineyard, hardly more than a kilometre from Morei as the crow flies, but here the Noce has deposited more sand in the upper soil layers, the plot is more open and thus less protected from cold winds. The grapes ripen about a week later. Teroldego Sgarzon is fabulous, filigree and yet full of richness and energy from the attack to the final. The bouquet – an exciting mix of dark fruits, tobacco, flowers, liquorice, mint and minerals. Very clear, pure and clean on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE
"Deep crimson. Aromatic dark–red fruit, with minor highlights of dried wild flowers, possibly lavender as it opens in the glass, and a hint of crushed stones, though this last characteristic is more evident on the Morei. Instantly captivating on the palate with a combination of energising freshness and very fine tannins, dry, pulled tight like a bowstring. So clean in the mouth and refined. A delicate peony–like scent appears on the palate but there's also a refined darkness to the flavour. Incredibly long, pure and vibrant. Becomes more floral with air. Delicious, sensitive wine." Jancis Robinson
"The 2020 Teroldego Sgarzon is remarkably pretty and finessed with crushed strawberries, roses and sweet smoke. This is silky and pliant with a cool–toned feel, complemented by lifting acidity and ripe mineral–tinged red berries. It leaves the palate watering for more, yet with a subtle tug of fine tannins and lingering sour cherry fruits. I don’t see the 2020 Sgarzon as a long–distance runner, yet it’s geared to give masses of pleasure over the medium term." Vinous
"Closed with a red wax capsule, the organic and biodynamic Foradori 2020 Teroldego Sgarzon shows a pretty dark color and rich saturation. Aromas include dark fruit, red beets, iodine, mahogany and perfumed teak wood. The wine is very savory with iron ore and rust, showing dark consistency and a strong set of aromas." Wine Advocate
"Incredibly vibrant wild–berry, wild–herb and savory aromas pour from the glass of this dangerously expressive teroldego red that has so much energy, it’s hard to understand how it stays in the glass. The mineral acidity and fine–grained tannins are beautifully interwoven on the very long, diamond–bright finish." James Suckling

“Morei” Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2020 (BIO) · MAGNUM in gift box
The Teroldego from Foradori are all a great experience. Elisabetta presses highly interesting wines from the autochthonous grape variety from the foot of the Dolomites. And they do so purely organically and partly in amphorae.
Morei (dark in Trentino dialect) is an original red wine, true to the terroir, and at the same time of irresistible elegance and finesse. Warm, dense and mineral like the soil on which it grows. Morei is protected from the cold north winds by the nearby steep rock faces. The rock stores heat during the day, which radiates to the vineyard at night. The soil here is very stony, therefore relatively warm, dense, dark, mineral, like the eponymous wine Morei Teroldego. The average age of the vines (30 years) also contributes to its depth of character. SUPERIORE.DE
"Deep crimson. Slightly darker fruited and with less of the floral note of the Sgarzon 2020, just a touch of peony, more mineral (an impression of rock dust), sober, perhaps a little bigger in the mouth than the Sgarzon – the alcohol is a tiny bit higher but still pretty modest. Firmer, more rounded tannins but still extremely fine, and they are deeper and denser. Like the Sgarzon, there is outstanding purity and refinement. Beautifully fresh even if the freshness is less immediate than in the Sgarzon, it carries through on the long, long finish. Such incredible elegance in a young wine and the most delicious, dry, non-sweet and yet fruit-laden finish." Jancis Robinson
"The 2020 Teroldego Morei is dark and inward, slowly blossoming in the glass with black cherries, balsam herbs, hints of cinnamon and clove. This is round in feel, yet with a reverberation of zesty acidity and inner spice. Depths of dark red fruits and minerals settle upon the senses, along with a coating of sweet tannin. Wow, the result is quite stunning, with a chiseled and almost-teeth-chattering feel through the finale. The 2020 is a very exciting vintage for Morei; a boost of warm vintage fruit adds depth to its usually-inward and structured persona. Enjoy a bottle now, but lose the rest for a few years in the cellar." Vinous
"A giant wave of ripe forest-berry aromas pours from the glass of this sensationally concentrated and silky teroldego red. There’s plenty of fresh tannin, but its already so well integrated that it feels like one of the fundamental forces of nature. Super-long, fine-grained, crushed-stone finish." James Suckling

“Nama” Cuvée Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2018 · in gift box
NA as in Nals, MA as in Margreid. A tribute to two outstanding sites where something special can be –, – and felt, and which have inspired cellarmaster Harald Schraffl to create something equally special from their grapes. A wine and essence that expresses the essence of the small plots in its purest form, whose typicity tells the South Tyrol of tomorrow, a timeless wine with recognition value in an international context. In 2016, this special marriage of – and –grapes finds its way into the bottle for the first time. NAMA is born – a cuvée of 85% Chardonnay, married with Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon.
Harald Schraffl describes the wine as follows: "The Chardonnay brings the power, the timelessness and the international length to the wine, the Pinot Blanc the regionality, the rootedness with our soil and our homeland, the Sauvignon the spice."
The vines for the Cuvée NAMA are between 30 and 40 years old. The grapes are harvested and selected by hand. After the gentle whole bunch pressing, the must is pre-clarified by natural, static sedimentation, fermentation and ageing in small oak barrels for 18 months on the lees. The grapes are then assembled and matured together on the lees for a further year in stainless steel tanks. The Cuvée NAMA is then bottled, where it matures for another year. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, rich straw yellow with light green components. Finely marked nose with notes of apricots and mirabelles, plus slightly resinous components, after spruce shoots. Plays up nicely on the palate, good pressure, salty, some green components on the final." Falstaff
"This wine is inspired by some of the great international expressions of Chardonnay. The Nals Margreid 2018 Alto Adige Bianco Nama is 90% Chardonnay with 7% Pinot Bianco and 3% Sauvignon Blanc just to give a little aromatic lift to the bouquet. Starting with the 2019 vintage, it becomes 100% Chardonnay. This gorgeous wine hits a perfect crosspoint of intensity, elegance and complexity. A light mineral dusting frames white peach, pear and quince. This medium–bodied white is plush and rich, but never heavy. Dolomitic notes give it lift and a convincing vertical push. Only 2,000 bottles were made plus specially numbered magnums." Wine Advocate
"A dense and layered white with cooked–apple, stone and light honey character, as well as pie crust and honeysuckle. It’s full–bodied and layered with a gorgeous, soft texture. Long and composed, with persistence and focus." James Suckling

San Leonardo is the flagship of the eponymous winery and one of the best red wines of Trentino every year. Opulent bouquet with nuances of dark fruits such as blackberry and sour cherry. Delicate spicy, leather and tobacco notes give it a terrific complexity, which is then extended on the palate by a harmonious play of dark berries, plums, the whole then flanked by clearly contoured tannin. A masterful red with a strong personality that will rise to its true greatness after a few more years of bottle ageing and live up to its reputation. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, rich ruby red. In the nose floral aromas of lavender, geranium, then fresh cassis and elderberry, in addition some liquorice, in the background fine spice of mint and sage. Opens radiantly and with a juicy core on the palate, clear fruit accompanies the course, in addition noble spice, still youthful, currently with almost hardly perceptible wide-meshedness in the finish." Falstaff
"The 2017 San Leonardo is dark, inward and intense with masses of crushed black currants, mint, sage, and balsamic spice. This pulls you close, as further depths of clove and tobacco form in the glass. It coasts along the palate with dense and polished textural fruits, mineral to the core, yet also elevated by brisk acids, while slowly drenching the senses in concentration. This leaves a web of fine tannins and a salty flourish, while tapering off with remarkable length. It's poised with savory herbs that linger long. In 2017, production was down by over 50% due to multiple hail events and a cask that was damaged during maturation." Vinous
"You could easily mistake the stunningly deep and subtle nose of this Sub–Alpine red for a high–end Medoc wine from the same vintage (which was on the restrained side). A super–elegant, mid–weight cabernet sauvignon–dominated blend with plenty of fine tannin married to blackcurrant and forest–berry fruit, plus touches of licorice, savory notes and bitter chocolate at the very long finish." James Suckling
"The Tenuta San Leonardo 2017 San Leonardo shows subtle but unmistakable generosity and exuberance that is absolutely in line with this hot vintage. In this regard, the 2017 stands apart from past vintages from this estate that is celebrated for its elegant, undertone and long–term approach. This wine is slightly more accessible too, with plush, dark fruit, balanced oak spice and perfumed rose over a polished, silky mouthfeel." Wine Advocate

“Troy” Chardonnay Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2018 · MAGNUM in OWC
Troy is no ordinary Chardonnay. Rather, it is the archetype of a Chardonnay, as Wolfgang Klotz, managing director of probably the most successful winegrowers' cooperative in South Tyrol, sees it. The grapes come from two selected vineyards in Söll, near Tramin. Not only does a Mediterranean climate prevail there, but also quite cold fall winds at night determine the vegetation. Both factors ensure optimal development of the plants and fruits. The berries are handpicked piece by piece and it is therefore clear to every wine connoisseur that this is an absolutely prestigious project of the cooperative. It is therefore not surprising that only 3,000 bottles of this vintage are sold in selected specialist shops and top restaurants.
Intense straw to golden yellow. Tropical fruit on the nose, a hint of camomile and mint, then fine toasted notes and a subtle nutty touch. On the palate, you can almost taste the proximity of the mountains, its clarity, freshness and intensity: exotic notes of yellow ripe fruit, then again some nuttiness and in addition again a beguiling liveliness and minerality, which ends in an equally long final. Chardonnay can be like this, chapeau! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright straw yellow with a slight light gold. In the nose of ripe golden apple, banana, mango, light candle wax, pineapple, a hint of white chocolate in the aftertaste. Juicy, clear and radiant on the palate, opens with elegant melting and light cream, creamy course, stretches out in many layers, coherent in itself, long and deep." Falstaff
"Already in the bouquet, a beautiful smokiness as well as a dense, powerful yellow-fruity style is apparent, which almost reminds a little of Corton Charlemagne because of the mineral-spicy pithiness. In the mouth, a beautiful liaison of creamy yellow fruit and mineral-smoky notes, powerfully interwoven, yet showing a lot of tension with cool notes." Weinwisser
"The nose is already subtle and delicate, with floral notes, mirabelle plums, citrus fruits, white pepper, nettle and a hint of smoke and vanilla. Also almost delicately built on the palate and carried by a precise, very fresh acidity. An all-round harmonious cru." Vinum
"Cedar and butterscotch nose. Bitter apple, roast-potato skin, chicory leaf and kohlrabi rubbed with sweet lemon. Dried oregano. Herb-nutty-savoury, as if the fruit had been sprinkled with za'atar. Lots here already, but I think this wine has a lot more to give, given time." Jancis Robinson
"Ripe orchard fruit, apricot and oaky nose. Lovely freshness on the palate with creamy buttery notes and some wood spice. Long finish." Decanter
"At once very fresh - Amalfi lemon! - and very toasty in the nose, this is an immediately appealing chardonnay with quite some depth. Really attractive interplay of northern freshness with Mediterranean ripeness. Buttery and refreshing finish that pulls you back for more." James Suckling

Since September 2016, he has also been writing for the website of wine critic and former editor of Wine Spectator, James Suckling. He describes his writing style as "gonzo wine journalism", meaning "unconditional research that entangles the journalist deeply in his subject." Read his exciting assessments of the current South Tyrolean vintages 2019-2021 today.
"The Dolomites in north-eastern Italy made headlines on 3 July when part of a glacier on the 3,300-metre-high Marmolada mountain collapsed. The heat wave in Italy and the associated climate change seem to be responsible. Of course, climate change is also affecting the vineyards in the north-eastern Italian provinces of Trentino and South Tyrol, which are located on the slopes below the Dolomites. Despite these challenges, this is an exciting time for us in the development of the wine industry of the sub-alpine region, as the leading winemakers there have made a paradigm shift.
It is no longer enough for these winemakers to produce attractive, fresh and fruity wines that are uncomplicated to enjoy. They want to achieve maximum depth and originality of aroma and taste. Among the top results of this year's tasting in the Trentino-Alto Adige region is the highest rating we have ever given to an Italian Pinot Noir red wine: the amazingly deep and complex Manincor Pinot Nero Alto Adige Mason di Mason 2019. In Trentino, the simultaneously compact and stunning Foradori Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti Granato 2019 was the best vintage ever made from the autochthonous Teroldego grape, making it a new milestone for the grape variety, for Foradori and for Trentino. All these star wines are late releases from the excellent 2019 vintage - a year with almost perfect weather conditions for the production of top dry wines.
In 2020 and 2021, on the other hand, winemakers in Trentino and South Tyrol had to contend with far more difficult weather conditions. 2020 was a classic example of what makes the profession of winemaking so demanding in the 21st century. The weather situation was basically positive, a warm spring led to early budding and early flowering of the vines. By mid-August it looked as if a great vintage would grow, but then the rains came just as the grapes softened and began to ripen. The extremely expressive and remarkably silky Foradori Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti Morei 2020 is proof that this vintage was able to produce exciting red wines despite these challenges.
If the description of 2020 already sounds as if it was problem-ridden, the situation in 2021 was just as extreme, but in a very different way. The cool spring of 2021 led to delayed flowering of the vines, and rain and hail in July made the situation even worse, sowing botrytis in some places. "In 2021, the weather was rarely perfect," says Helmuth Zozin, director of the Manincor winery. "In the end, the ripeness of the grapes was perfect, with a good balance of the main flavour components, but we had to remove a few rotten berries from each bunch." This remark needs to be put in context, especially the fact that sauvignon blanc and pinot noir are very important varieties for Manincor. Both grape varieties are particularly susceptible to rot.
However, in the less successful white wines of the 2021 vintage, the acidity can be quite edgy and these wines also lack some positive fruit aromas. Nevertheless, an obvious green of unripe fruit was surprisingly rare, even in the entry-level wines. This is the result of the professionalism of the regional wine industry. When it comes to the fresh, medium-bodied dry white wines the region is known for, the winemakers really know how to produce them." Stuart Pigott/James Suckling
