Nonino

The herb liqueur Quintessentia is produced according to an old recipe handed down by Antonio Nonino. High-quality ÙE grape spirit and the finest herbs give the Amaro its full, round aroma. The bottle is reminiscent of an antique apothecary's jar.

Quintessentia is the winner in the bitter liqueur category of the Ultimate Spirit Challenge 2021, the most prestigious spirits competition in the world. Among more than 52 participating countries and over 300 finalists, Amaro Nonino Quintessentia was awarded the top prize, the Chairmans Trophy. The jury, headed by Paul Pacult, described the Amaro as follows: "Beguiling aromas of orange and camomile complement each other. Delicate and mellifluous are the floral and grassy notes that transition with a soft texture into blood orange, borage flower and a slight botanical bitterness. Silvia Milocco Nonino, Antonio's wife and from the third generation of the distiller family, lost her husband in the war. The only wealth she had for the economic survival of her family was the marc. She set to work determinedly and learned distilling in the early 1940s. Before becoming Italy's very first female master distiller, she worked as a cook in the family inn. Her botanical knowledge was of great advantage in the creation of her first liqueur. She wanted her products to express her Friulian homeland: pure, authentic and unadulterated. Therefore, she made an aperitif from botanicals, which she called "Aperitivo Bianco".

After their grandchildren Cristina, Antonella, Elisabetta and Francesca had spent three years researching the botanicals of the traditional recipe, they created a new version of the "Aperitivo Bianco" in 2018, this time enhanced by the grape spirit ÙE Fragolino. The sisters drew inspiration from the recipes in the family archive and transformed an old botanical recipe into a contemporary drink of pleasure.

For this, flowers, roots and fruits are carefully selected according to origin and organoleptic properties, then dried at low temperature so that the natural intensity of scent, taste and colour is preserved. Gentle filtering preserves the citrus freshness and lovely mildness of the plants. A 100% vegetable harmony refined by the grape spirit ÙE Monovitigno Fragolino, which underlines the natural balsamic nuances with Mediterranean fruity notes. Hints of blackberry and wild berries round off the taste.

The special thing about it: the new aperitivo is 100% natural and vegan and is made without any additives.

The production is very limited, as only high-quality honey from ecologically pure areas is used. The distillation process is very slow in order to allow the volatile ingredients responsible for the fragrance of the distillate to evaporate and then condense in the right way, so that the rare and precious fragrance and taste characteristics of the selected honey are not lost.

Elegant, very fine, corresponds to the scent and taste of acacia honey. Very typical of the variety. Served at 10°C or in an iced tulip-shaped glass. Nonino celebrates the 25th anniversary of the ÙE grape brandy with the outstanding Riserva ÙE 25th Anniversary - an assemblage of separately distilled grape brandies from Ribolla, Moscato, Merlot and Malvasia, which matured for five years in barriques or small wooden barrels. Antica Cuvée - here in the high alcoholic dosage form "Cask Strength" - is a fine, very aromatic Riserva. Nonino uses the traditional still for distillation. The inviting clear amber colour is the result of storage in small barrels. A very special note is given to the cuvée by the small but essential addition of young grappa, which has matured for a year in Limousin barriques. Fruity, warm, velvety and long-lasting.
