• Frappato di Vittoria DOC 2018

      Frappato di Vittoria DOC 2018

A pure Frappato is a rare variety, because the very late maturing grape variety is usually blended with others. Frappato thrives on the sandy soils of Vittoria in south-eastern Sicily and produces a complex wine with race and character. Floral bouquet with aromas of cherry and peach, on the palate notes of strawberry, light mineral and slender, in the aftertaste reminiscences of apple and orange peel. SUPERIORE.DE

"Aromas and flavors of candied watermelon, together with white pepper and lemon rind. Light body. Fresh, clean finish. More like a dark rosé." James Suckling

"Aromas of strawberry, red cherry and white pepper follow over to the polished, savory palate, along with hints of smoke and pomegranate. It's silky and bright, with fresh acidity, making it incredibly delicious to enjoy now." (Editors' Choice) Wine Enthusiast

The pure Nero d'Avola is full of dark aromas of berries, black cherry, liquorice and tobacco. On the palate lush and distinctive with a wonderful spicy note of mint, aniseed and espresso. A really great wine at an impressively low price! SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark ruby red. Spicy dark fruity nose, liquorice, cocoa powder, rich cherry, but also violets and dried red rose petals. On the palate melty, fruit sweet and fine, opens with tightly woven, juicy tannin, good length, fine pressure." Falstaff

"A pure expression of Nero d'Avola, the 2016 Sicilia Saia is a rich and contemporary expression of this versatile Sicilian grape. The bouquet is layered and rich with plump cherry nuances followed by tobacco, spice and charred earth. This is a lavish and soft wine that maintains a mid- to full-bodied approach with soft tannins and sweet fruit endnotes." Robert Parker

    • "Laeneo" Nerello Cappuccio Sicilia DOC 2016

“Laeneo” Nerello Cappuccio Sicilia DOC 2016

It is very rare and highly commendable that here once a pure Nerello Cappuccio comes into the bottle, when the Nerello Mascalese at Etna is usually the red place deer. Bright garnet red, youthfully fresh wine with a bouquet of strawberry and citrus fruit, in addition stony-mineral tones, flowers and spices. In the taste of subtle elegance with a pleasant fresh breeze. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright and intense ruby red. Mineral-salty nose underlaid with fine smoke, precocious cherries, raspberries, red currants, spicy. On the palate balanced and crystal clear, very juicy, salty, spreads wide and tight, very harmonious, in the finale punchy." Falstaff

"This shows the best of both worlds from Etna with lovely, bright-blue fruit married to balsamic and a touch of dried herbs. The palate is chewy and full-bodied at its very core, while the acidity is bright but never overpowering, sitting evenly between layered blueberries and blackcurrants. Long on the finish." Wonderful cuvée based on Nero d'Avola. Ruby red with vivid garnet reflections. In the intense fragrance allusions of tobacco, spices and mineral notes. The balanced taste, characterized by red fruits, impresses on the palate with blackberry and sour cherry tones and ends in a final of good length. SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark, bright ruby red. In the nose of ripe cherries, plums, underlined by fine spicy and peppery tones, appears compact and inviting. Taut and juicy on the palate, opens on spicy elements, gripping." Falstaff

"A ripe and juicy wine with sour-cherry and berry character. Hints of almonds. Medium body. Flavorful finish." James Suckling

"Deep red. Ripe aromas of red cherry and Oriental spices. Then fresh and juicy, but with a luscious quality to the super-ripe red and black cherry flavors that turn more austere in the middle. • "Maharis" Syrah Sicilia DOC 2016

      “Maharis” Syrah Sicilia DOC 2016

2016 was a very balanced wine year in Sicily and this exceptional wine is the current example of how the Syrah grape variety in particular can reach its peak in this exciting wine region.

Deep dark, sparkling ruby red. In the bouquet an opulent dark red fruit basket, intense and full-bodied. Already in the first sip a depth, which looks for unequalled in this price range. It is almost spectacular in which heights this wine is able to carry the connoisseur. He always convinces with an indescribable balance. Maharis is never fat or marmalade, but his potpourri of dark fruits, spices, mature leather and a subtle smoky note is always in balance with a surprising freshness and liveliness. In the finale it closes long, velvety and with rich texture. Great. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling ruby with a slight violet hue. Opened with pronounced spicy notes, cardamom and eucalyptus, beautiful blueberry fruit, very clear. On the palate, polished and juicy, tannin with a good grip, a pithy finish." Falstaff

"An elegant, medium- to full-bodied Syrah, with muscular tannins providing fine definition for the flavors of black plum, olive tapenade and fig cake, showing minerally smoke and iron accents. Offers a well-spiced, chewy finish." Wine Spectator

"A spicy syrah that shows lots of freshness with balsamic, crushed stones, violets and black pepper. Full body, steely tannins and a mineral finish. Shows excellent composure and definition." James Suckling

"The 2016 Sicilia Syrah Mahâris is an inky dark and concentrated wine that marries the warmth of Sicily to heat-loving Syrah. You get some varietal tones of white pepper, bacon fat and chocolate, but these aromas are not as prominent as you might find in the great Syrahs of the Old and New World. In the case of this wine, that sunny Sicilian softness takes center stage and shapes sweet fruit and dark cherry flavors. To me, the Sicilian identity is ultimately stronger in this vintage of Mahâris than its varietal identity. That's what I love best about this wine." Robert Parker

      “Passorosso” Etna DOC 2016

Passorosso is a pure Nerello Mascalese, which already shows fine garnet reflections in its ruby red. Proud and fascinating, it presents an intense aroma and engaging taste with clear, well defined fruit and pronounced minerality. Graceful and special. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, luminous ruby red with a brilliant core. In the nose ripe raspberries and fine cherries, opens in the aftertaste on coffee powder and black olives, inviting. Melting and juicy on the palate, carried by light salt, stretches a beautiful arch, powerful and clear in the finale." Falstaff

"The 2016 Etna Rosso Passorosso is the most accessible of the red wines presented by Andrea Franchetti and the team at Passopisciaro in the not-always-easy 2016 vintage. The wine is clean and forthcoming with a nice succession of wild berry and cassis, all framed by spice, tar and toasted aniseed. This wine makes itself immediately available for a pairing with roasted porchetta stuffed with fennel and herbs. The mouthfeel is crisp but compact on the close." Robert Parker

"Luminous red. Floral and mineral nuances complement violet and blueberry aromas on the inviting nose. Clean, bright and juicy, this offers vibrant flavors of ripe dark plum, blackcurrant and minerals. A very pretty wine that finishes taut and saline but with building sweetness and intriguing pepperiness." Vinous

"Andrea Franchetti’s wines helped put Etna on the map. So charming and appealing already, it has delicate and pretty raspberry, cream and gentle spice. Burgundian delicacy and lacy style. I love the juicy, vibrant fruit." Decanter

"Pale ruby. Perfumed deep cherry nose with iron hints. Supple and transparent and with shy, brooding fruit. The most elegant of Pietradolce’s 2016 offering. Very long and precise and with plenty of fine tannins." Jancis Robinson

"The 2016 Etna Rosso Archineri is made with fruit from pre-phylloxera vines aged up to 90 years old. This is a finessed and nuanced expression from a vintage that threw a few curve balls to vintners on Etna where the climate and temperatures can change at the drop of a dime. The finish is shorter compared to vintages of the recent past, but this mid-weight red is very articulate in terms of its aromatic offerings. It shows small-berry aromas with lilac, spice and wild blueberry. Some 7,000 bottles were made." Robert Parker

"Medium deep red. Inviting aromas of sweet spices, sour red berries, ripe red plum and musky herbs. Then dense and rich, with a refined element to the flinty red cherry and berry flavors that are both fleshy and spicy. Turns a bit more juicy and lemony on the long and very fresh back end. Made from 80-90 years old Nerello Mascalese vines planted at 800 meters above sea level on the northern slope of Etna." Vinous

"Extremely aromatic red with dried flowers, cream, citrus and plums. Hint of pumice, too. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a delicious finish. So drinkable now, but better in 2020." James Suckling

"Citrus peel acidity enlivens the dried cherry and cranberry fruit flavors of this balanced, medium-bodied red, underscored by a rich vein of tarry mineral and wild herb notes. Creamy tannins firm the lingering finish." Wine Spectator

"Bright red. Reticent aromas of red cherry, Oriental spices, roses, plum nectar and soy sauce on the brooding nose. Floral and fresh in the mouth, with hints of Oriental spices and tobacco complicating ripe, thick plum and cherry flavors. Less immediately fruity and more tannic than the Santo Spirito, as it should be given the characteristics of these two crus. The finish is long, juicy and a touch austere for its current tannic clout. Needs time." Vinous

"The 2016 Etna Rosso Contrada Rampante shows girth and power to the mid-palate. This is a dense and fleshed-out red wine from Etna made with fruit from 90-year-old vines. However, like other expressions from this vintage, I found there to be a lot of immediate intensity up front, with less persistence and fiber in the long run. This seems to be a shared characteristic of 2016. Some 5,000 bottles were made." Robert Parker

    Falstaff: Wine Continent Sicily

"The largest Mediterranean island once was known for cheap mass wines. With a new generation of winegrowers, Sicily continues a millennia-old high culture. Sicilian wines used to be known for their fullness, but these days are over. Now they are juicy and elegant, because the quality on the sunny island has increased tremendously. While the wines used to inspire with their power, they are now increasingly characterized by finesse. The rich tradition of Sicily is not neglected.

From the sun-drenched vineyards near Pachino in the south-east or near Trapani and Marsala in the west, to the hillsides inland and up to the slopes of Mount Etna and Monti Nebrodi, the climate zones are very different. Sicilians rightly call their island a continent of its own, which produces a variety of different wines.

The variety also continues with the choice of grape varieties: Whereas in the 1990s Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon were the most popular wines to draw the attention of the international wine world to Sicily, they are now concentrating more on local varieties again." Falstaff 04/2019

Over 300 Sicilian wines were tasted, today we present an interesting selection of the Sicilians highly rated by the experienced wine journalist Othmar Kiem. Have fun browsing, studying and enjoying!
