Carricante, the autochthonous white grape variety from eastern Sicily (mostly around Etna), is now a rarity, as there were only 205 hectares left in the last statistics in 2010. However, since some larger wineries such as Tenuta delle Terre Nere, Tasca d'Almerita, Planeta, Cusumano, Graci or Benanti around Etna have invested a lot in recent years, it can be assumed that some have also increasingly relied on this elegant, fresh variety and the downward trend has stopped.
Carricante ripens quite late, is high-yielding and shines straw-yellow in the glass. It is usually the main variety in Etna bianco and makes for fresh white wines, fragrant with white flowers and aromas of oranges, grapefruit and often a little aniseed. Fine acidity and moderate alcohol make these white wines from Etna more sought after than quantities available. By the way, the very rare sparkling wines are also a great pleasure! SUPERIORE.DE
