Marchesi Antinori

Antinori | Toskana

"Here is the ultimate wild card in the thick stack of aces that make up the Marchesi Antinori portfolio. It is the proverbial "jolly" (the name for the joker card in Italian) or the jack of all trades. The 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Tenuta Tignanello can been seen as a huge provocation and that's the way I've decided to interpret it. When the Gran Selezione category was created in the Chianti Classico appellation, many important leaders hoped that the Antinori family would convert their landmark super Tuscan Tignanello into a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione wine. The Antinori clan indicated that they had no intention of removing Tignanello from its IGT Toscana status. Instead, they dedicated some fruit from the same vineyard site to this wine. The Riserva category is often seen as a stepping stone to Grand Selezione and I wonder if that is the direction this wine is headed? Will there one day be two wines from this historic vineyard: The IGT Tignanello and a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Tenuta Tignanello? There's some food for thought. The wine is very balanced and nuanced with pretty mineral notes, followed by red cherry flavors and mild spice." Robert Parker

"The 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is distinguished in this lineup for its freshness and aromatic intensity, both signatures of the Tignanello estate. Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries, mint and cinnamon are some of the notes that meld together. Lithe, medium in body and gracious, the 2012 is wonderfully refined from start to finish." Antonio Galloni

"A blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, this has enticing scents of fragrant blue flower, wild berry, anise and a whiff of exotic spice. The palate boasts structure and finesse, offering black cherry, cinnamon, white pepper and a hint of tobacco backed up by lithe tannins and bright acidity." Wine Enthusiast

"A red with dried berry, lemon rind and chocolate character. Fruity and silky on the palate. Beautiful and flavorful. Excellent." James Suckling

Chianti Classico "Badia a Passignano" Gran Selezione DOCG 2010 Chianti Classico "Badia a Passignano" Gran Selezione DOCG 2010

Marchesi Antinori | Toskana

Marchesi Antinori S.p.A. | Piazza Antinori 3 | IT 50123 Firenze

Falstaff

"Dark berry and blueberry aromas with hints of lemon and floral undertones. Full body, silky tannins and a hazelnut, chocolate complexity to the whole thing. Delicious and flavorful yet always remains balanced." James Suckling

"Antinori's 2010 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano is laced with red cherry, plum, leather, tobacco and smoke. Layered and impeccably balanced in the glass, the 2010 impresses for its texture and exceptional sense of harmony. In this vintage, the Badia is dark, voluptuous and built on pure resonance. This is a terrific showing from Antinori." Antonio Galloni

"This opens with subtle aromas of dark berry, tobacco and exotic spice. The vibrant palate is more expressive, delivering a core of juicy black cherry accented by notes of raspberry, white pepper, vanilla, licorice and savory herb. This finessed wine is still young, but structured with tightly knit, yet fine-grained tannins (Cellar Selection)." Wine Enthusiast

"Renzo Cotarella is one of a handful of people who believe that the Gran Selezione category should be 100% Sangiovese. The 2010 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano is an elegant and seamless mono-variety expression that shows loads of Sangiovese character in this classic vintage. Aged only in large oak casks, the wine sports fresh berry flavors with sweet tannins and a long, velvety finish. I feel that this wine might get buried between the many other products offered by Marchesi Antinori. I hope not because ultimately the Gran Selezione offers very specific, territory-driven qualities that set it apart." Robert Parker

Ein super Wein. Viel Körper und Intensität. Bleibt lange in Mund.

"Here’s a structured red with lots of finesse. It opens with alluring aromas of fragrant blue flowers, red berries, baking spices and exotic herbs while the firm, vibrant palate delivers black cherry, crushed raspberry, clove, orange zest, licorice and a sprinkling of white pepper. It’s still young but well balanced, with tightly woven but polished tannins and fresh acidity." Wine Enthusiast

"The 2012 Tignanello is deep, rich and voluptuous, yet also retains a distinct element of classicism in its focused, mid-weight structure. Dark red cherry, pomegranate, kirsch, spice, tobacco and menthol open up in the glass, but only reluctantly. Firm veins of tannin and pulsating acidity give the wine its sense of energy and verticality. The mid-weight structure should allow the wine to open up in another few years. The 2012 isn't as powerful as the 2010 or exotic as the 2011, but rather is most similar to how the 2005 was in its youth. The 2012 is a Tignanello built on pure finesse and grace. I would not open a bottle before its tenth birthday, if at all possible." Antonio Galloni

"Aromas of blackcurrants and blueberries with hints of lavender and violets. Full body, chewy and polished tannins and a long, flavorful finish. A beautifully linear and polished red. Give it time to show it all but this is already a beauty. The depth and class to this are indeed impressive." James Suckling

"Solaia" Toscana IGT 2012 "Solaia" Toscana IGT 2012

Marchesi Antinori S.p.A. | Piazza Antinori 3 | IT 50123 Firenze

"Another intense, tightly-wound wine, the 2012 Solaia is likely to require a number of years in bottle before it is ready to drink. Graphite, smoke, plums, black cherries, rose petal and mint meld together effortlessly in the glass. Here, too, the style is all about grace and finesse. The 2012 Solaia is going require patience, but all the elements are in the right place. In 2012, the Cabernet Franc is nearly 7% of the blend, which is on the high side." Antonio Galloni

"The 2012 Solaia is the ultimate comfort wine: It serves as a beautiful monument to the potential of Italian wine. Let me give you some context. My lukewarm review of the 2011 vintage caused some heads to turn. Happily, the previous vintage has served as a springboard for this current release. Both 2011 and 2012 come from hot climatic conditions, but these wines are very different in style and content. The 2011 heat softened the lines that make up the varietal identity of this celebrated Tuscan blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. Those lines are presented in sharp focus with the 2012 edition. The nose is redolent of dark berry, crushed mineral, plum, spice and touch of white pepper. The wine is integrated and seamless, but it speaks with a strong and articulate voice." Robert Parker

"This stunning expression of Solaia opens with ample aromas of exotic spices, tilled soil, mature black-skinned fruit and an underlying whiff of fragrant blue flowers. The vibrant, elegantly structured palate doles out high-toned black cherry, ripe blackberry, white pepper, cinnamon, clove and Mediterranean herbs alongside a backbone of firm, polished tannins and bright acidity." Wine Enthusiast

"Extremely impressive ripe dark fruits of blueberries, plums and blackberries follow through to a full body, round texture and bright acidity. The finesse and depth to this red is stunning making it a wonderful successor to the 2011 Solaia. Needs three or four years to soften and open." James Suckling

"Ripe plum and black cherry notes are augmented by toast, spice and tobacco details in this muscular red. Turns more compact on the finish, where dense, dusty tannins reign. Just needs time to integrate." Wine Spectator

"This rich, bright red displays plum, blackberry, boysenberry, leather and spice notes, allied to a dense structure. Remains balanced and juicy through the finish and is built for the long haul." Wine Spectator

"A big, rich wine but there's lots of brightness and beauty at the same time. Shows licorice and asphalt. Full body with chewy tannins and a long finish. Terracotta, Tuscan dust and spice, plus balsamic too. This needs three to five years to soften. Intense finish." James Suckling

"Blackberry jam, cassis, grilled herbs and melted road tar meld together in the 2011 Solaia. Another super-exotic, racy 2011 from Antinori, Solaia is supremely beautiful. Mocha, espresso and sage are some of the many notes that add complexity. Hints of white truffle, lavender, smoke and licorice are laced into the exotic, racy finish. In 2011, Solaia has a dollop more of Cabernet Franc in the blend, added to give the wine a touch of freshness. Ripe and flashy to the core, the 2011 needs time to lose some of its youthful exuberance. At times, the 2011 could be easily mistaken for a wine from Napa Valley, such is its intensity." Antonio Galloni
