Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2011 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2011

Camigliano | Toskana

Camigliano S.r.l. | Via Orazio 8b | IT 00040 Pomezia

"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino opens to soft layers of plush fruit and red cherry. The wine shows a ripe side to the vintage with bold fruit that is chewy and rich. Despite the wine's opulence, it never feels jammy or overdone. In fact, it reins in that extra sunshine with expert care and attention. In contrast to the richness of the bouquet, the medium-bodied mouthfeel is toned and exhibits less dimension overall. The appeal here is genuine and immediate." Robert Parker

"A beautiful, sexy wine with exotic aromas of freshly cut flower, cherry and strawberry. Full body with fine, silky tannins. Long, fresh finish." James Suckling

"Cherry and plum flavors hold the upper hand until the long finish, where beefy tannins enter the fray. Spice, tobacco and earth accents chime in." Wine Spectator

"A ripe red with plum and lemon-peel undertones. Very perfumed. Medium to full body, silky tannins and a polished finish. Very fine." James Suckling

"The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is an interesting wine that seems to break ties with the darker and riper style we've seen in past vintages from Camigliano. The fact that this nuanced and elegant style has been achieved in a warm vintage is as impressive as it is unlikely. You got to hand it to the hard working vineyard team that evidently found the right elements (like harvest times and yields) to reach a more profound sense of harmony. The mouthfeel is streamlined and tight. Like many of its peers, this wine is best for near and medium-term consumption. Yet, the wine remains softly balanced and soothing on the senses nonetheless." Robert Parker

"Bright, saturated red-ruby.  Rich aromas of ripe raspberry, tobacco and mocha; this nose is clearly the product of a hotter microclimate but stays fresh and lifted. Then complex, multilayered and sweet, with lovely generosity to the very suave raspberry, dried cherry, coffee and coconut flavors.  This strikes me as being higher in acidity than usual for a Cupano Brunello, addig a dimension of lift and juiciness to its rich, mouthcoating texture. The supple tannins provide support on the long back end." Ian d'Agata

Col d’Orcia | Toskana

Col d'Orcia S.r.l. Soc. Agr. | Via Giuncheti | IT 53024 Montalcino

"Bright and freshly fruity with plum, cherry and walnut undertones. Medium to full body and firm and silky tannins. Really beautiful and bright. One of the best wines in years from here." James Suckling

"Tasted blind. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Shy, yet rich cherry nose. A little reluctant on the palate, too, with juicy but closed cherry fruit. Fragrant and elegant and with an imposing, tannic structure, making the finish a little tough for the moment and demanding time. Undeniably elegant." Jancis Robinson

"Good bright red.  Very pure nose offers raspberry, pomegranate, and licorice.  Fresh and vinous, with scented yet silky flavors of redcurrant, raspberry, flowers and spices perked up by firm acidity and a solid mineral spine. The finish is penetrating and long and long. This is a lovely example of the typical 2012 high acid, perfumed Brunellos, but those weaned on high pH, fleshier wnes may fnd it to be a littler lean." Castello Banfi | Toskana

Banfi S.r.l. | Loc. Castello di Poggio alle Mura snc | IT 53024 Montalcino

"Castello Banfi has maintained an excellent reputation for consistency over the years. The performance of its base Brunello offers solid evidence of this. If you look back at the scores over the years, you will see less fluctuation between the good vintages and the bad ones. That consistency is achieved thanks to significant investments in manpower and technology. The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino beautifully illustrates my point. The wine is openly redolent of Sangiovese-driven aromas of wild berry, underbrush and spice. The finish is long, silky and the tannins are polished. This wine should hold well for the next ten years." Robert Parker

"Love the complex aromas of raspberries, strawberries and minerals. Full body with fine, refined tannins with currant, blueberry and cherry flavors wrapped up in the tannic structure. A wine that that will deliver much more in a year or two." James Suckling

"Plum and earth flavors mark this ripe, meaty red. Shows good freshness, winding down with leafy and tobacco notes. Delivers fine balance and a long finish." Wine Spectator

Castello Banfi | Toskana

Banfi S.r.l. | Loc. Castello di Poggio alle Mura snc | IT 53024 Montalcino

"A sleek and pretty red with plum and light chocolate character plus hints of walnuts. Medium to full body and fine tannins. Shows the ripe balance of the 2012 vintage for Brunello." James Suckling

"Castello Banfi's 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is a textbook expression of the vintage. This wine faithfully reflects the warmth of the vintage thanks to aromas of plump cherry, blackberry, spice, grilled herb and rosemary. The bouquet offers a very Mediterranean quality that is saturated, rich and succulent. There's a distant mineral vein that fits perfectly within this aromatic portrait of Sangiovese. Castello Banfi has done a good job building up the mouthfeel in a vintage that has produced many thin and lean wines. This expression offers respectable dimension and depth." Robert Parker

Il Poggione | Toskana

Tenuta Il Poggione | Loc. Monteano | S. Angelo in Colle | IT 53024 Montalcino

"Il Poggione has done a terrific job with its 2011 Brunello di Montalcino. The wine is soft, yielding and charged with a velvety and smooth texture. It is deeply redolent of dark berry, black cherry, spice, leather and tobacco. The wine's sunny personality never feels flat or too dense. In fact, the wine offers a very tight and steely backbone that gives the wine stature and strength. This is one of my favorite Brunellos from the 2011 vintage." Robert Parker

"A dark, powerful wine, the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino offers notable depth and intensity. Il Poggione's 2011 is one of the richest, most powerful wines of the year. Black cherry, plum, lavender, cloves and new leather are some of the first nuances that open up. With time in the glass, the 2011 becomes more lifted, as brighter red cherry and raspberry-infused flavors gradually release. This is a rare 2011 that demands at least a good few years in the cellar. In 2011, Il Poggione did not bottle a Riserva. All the juice went into the straight Brunello." Antonio Galloni

"A red with plum, meat, cedar and sandalwood character on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, tight and structured. Racy finish. Refined at the end for a 2011." James Suckling

"A beefy style, evoking plum, leather, tobacco and earth flavors, backed by dense, dusty tannins. Starts out juicy before the gruff finish takes over. Fresh and long." Wine Spectator

Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona | Toskana

Az. Agr. Ciacci Piccolomini | Loc. Molinello | IT 53024 Castellnuovo

"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is a very beautiful wine that shows a fraction of good things to come. Very fruit-driven at the moment, it should flesh out further with time. Evident fruit underlines the warm growing conditions of this vintage. You get dark cherry, raspberry, dried strawberry and plum. The bouquet doesn't feel overripe per se, but you definitely get a taste of the warm growing season. Delve deeper, and this Brunello begins to reveal spice, herb, cola, tar and black licorice. These elements form the base of the wine's budding complexity. As nice as this wine is to drink now, I look forward to trying it five years from now." Robert Parker

"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is fabulous. In 2011, proprietor Paolo Bianchini bottled just one Brunello. That commitment to quality comes through loud and clear. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco and licorice all flesh out in an effortless, incredibly inviting wine. The warmth of the vintage and the natural generosity of these vineyards in Castelnuovo is evident, yet the 2011 possesses remarkable balance to match all of that intensity. I don't expect the 2011 to make old bones, but is gorgeous today. Readers should expect a flamboyant, decadently full-throttle wine built on voluptuousness and generous, racy fruit. Bianchini gave the 2011 three full years in cask." Antonio Galloni

"The aromas of wet earth, sliced mushroom and blueberry are very pretty. Full body, firm tannins. Structured and firm. Excellent." James Suckling

"Earthy and structured, this opens with aromas suggesting underbrush, grilled porcini, sunbaked earth, wild berry and dried aromatic herb. The big, bold palate doles out layers of mature black cherry, raspberry jam, licorice, sage, tobacco and black tea. Firm, velvety tannins provide structure and finesse." Wine Enthusiast

"A slightly austere Brunello with tangy citrus peel character and sliced plum undertones. Full body, with firm tannins and a long finish. A smoky, lightly toasted oak finish." James Suckling

"The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous. Cloves, menthol, plums and smoke wrap around the palate as this rich, resonant wine shows off its textural volume and depth. Ripe, silky tannins support a finish that is striking for its beauty and softness. This is a terrific showing from one of my favorite under-the-radar estates in Montalcino." Robert Parker

"The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino shows a very distinct personality that separates it from its peers. There's a dark, mysterious and masculine side to this wine that is evident from first impact. The bouquet offers infinite layers of black fruit, plum, spice, cumin seed and crushed clove. You get a great sense of moist earth, tobacco and forest floor. Nothing is obvious. The wine keeps you guessing sip after sip. It would benefit from more years of cellar aging, but it's really not that far off from optimal drinking." Robert Parker

"Altesino's 2011 Brunello di Montalcino opens with beguiling aromatics. Sage, licorice, menthol and sweet tobacco flesh out nicely as the wine shows off its ample, broad personality. The tannins could use another year or two to soften, but all the elements are very nicely balanced throughout. This gracious, silky Brunello will drink well for the next decade-plus." Antonio Galloni

"This is long and delicious with lovely cherry, chocolate and fresh walnut flavors. Linear yet open with persistence and joy." James Suckling

"Fragrant and sleek, this opens with scents of blue flower, pressed powder, perfumed berry and chopped herb. The balanced, full-bodied palate delivers licorice, ripe black cherry, clove and tobacco while firm, velvety tannins lend structure and finesse." Wine Enthusiast

"The sweet cherry core is framed by dense, ripe tannins in this red. Leather, tobacco and iron notes add depth. The finish is fresh and long." Wine Spectator

Az. Agr. Altesino | Toskana

Altesino S.p.A. Soc. Agr. | Loc. Altesino 54 | IT 53024 Montalcino

"Altesino is now celebrating the release of its 40th harvest. In fact, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is inscribed with the words "our 40th Harvest" in gold letters on its front label. This is a truly delicious wine that exceeds my expectations. I love the way it takes full command of the slightly bolder and more opulent dark fruit aromas produced in this hot vintage. Black cherry, plum and crème de cassis converge on the bouquet. Grilled herb, forest floor, licorice and exotic spice play supporting roles. The finish offers moderate acidity on the Sangiovese scale. This means the wine is mush fresher and more tonic than most Tuscan reds. The finish is long and silky." Robert Parker

"Cherry, leather and iron notes mark this suave, elegant red. A bit reticent now, but the fruit is fresh and long on the finish. The dense tannins leave a mouthcoating impression, but this opens up beautifully over a few hours." Wine Spectator

"Marking the winery's 40th harvest, this vintage offers classic Sangiovese fragrance: wild berry, blue flower, baking spice and a whiff of new leather. The palate is sleek and elegant, doling out juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry, cinnamon and star anise, framed by lithe, polished tannins and fresh acidity. It's loaded with finesse and tempting now but will be even better with a few more years in bottle." Wine Enthusiast

"A juicy Brunello with plum and dark-chocolate character, yet this always remains subtle and fresh. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh finish." James Suckling

"Mid ruby with bright orange tinges. Exotic, lifted cassis nose and almost as if it has a little VA. Hugely aromatic cassis and raspberry-fruit palate. Fantastic crunch, zest and length, but needs to settle." Jancis Robinson
