Im Jahre 1489 begann Antonio Bastiano Baroncini, reicher Guts- und Landbesitzer, in San Gimignano mit der Weinbereitung. Tochter Apollonia hielt sich treu an die Traditionen der Winzerfamilie. Sie heiratete Michele Pesciolini, der aus einer mächtigen, mit den 'Medici' verwandten, Adelsfamilie von San Gimignano stammte. So brachte es die Familie zu Ansehen und konnte ihre Besitztümer kontinuierlich erweitern. Auch nach 500 Jahren ist die Familie Baroncini noch immer im Weinbau tätig. Das Unternehmen wird heute von Frau Bruna und ihrem Mann Stefano geführt.

Die Weinberge von Poggio il Castellare befinden sich in einer der besten Lagen um den Ort Castelnuovo dell'Abate, in der Nähe des großartigen Panoramas der Abtei Sant'Antimo und gegenüber dem eindrucksvollen Orcia-Tal, wo sich der Monte Amiata imposant erhebt. Der Name Castellare führt auf die antike etruskische Ansiedlung zurück, wovon heute noch Überreste auf diesem Hügel zu sehen sind. Zu den Gütern der Baroncinis zählen auch die Fattoria Querciarossa in der Maremma und die Tenuta Il Faggeto im Montepulciano-Gebiet. (superiore.de)
